THE BRETON BOOSTER [email protected] 780-887-0077 JUNE 24 2020 EDITION #1435 THE BRETON BOOSTER Museum Remembers Health Care Workers From Allan Goddard The past few months has driven home to all of us the important role that frontline healthcare workers play in the health and safety of the public. The Breton Museum would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for your dedication and sacrifices in keeping our loved one’s safe. In my last article to the Breton Booster I mentioned that the next article would focus on another artifact in the museum’s collection which has a connection to an early healthcare provider in Breton. Miss Philippa Chapman was one of the many dedicated women who served in the “The District Nursing Service”. The District Nurses served remote rural communities where no other medical help was available. An import- ant role of the nurses was to provide maternal and child welfare, with pre and post-natal care and the delivery of babies. In addition, the nurses dealt with a wide array of injuries, sickness and other medical needs in the com- munity. They were the first line of defense, and if the situation arose where it was beyond their training, they made arrangements for transport to a hospital, by any means available. As my father so succinctly put it, they were “angels of mercy for many”. To apply for a District Nurse a number of conditions besides not being close to medical services had to be met: they included providing a home /office space for the nurse to live in and meet patients, furnishing the nurse’s home, fuel and water. The nurse’s salary was paid by the government with any extra fees by the patient. Miss Chapman was born in England in 1887 and came with her family to Maidstone Saskatchewan in 1905. She took her nursing training at the Edmonton General Hospital and graduated in 1914. After graduation she work at the Lloydminster Hospital, working long hours with few conveniences. In 1936 she was stationed at Lindale, where served for about four years. Miss Chapman was kept busy with many maternity cases along with the wide array of med- ical needs of the community. She then was stationed at Warburg and in about 1945 came to Breton where she served the community until the early 1950’s. After retir- ing from nursing she moved to Vancouver where she bought a house and cared for her parents. Miss Chap- man passed away in 1980 at the age of 92. The photo below is of a small Anglican Hymnal which belonged to Miss Philippa A. Chapman. The hymnal was a gift to her when she left England for Canada with her family, from the choir of the church she attended in England as a young adult for her service. The inscrip- tion on the inside cover reads… “A token of Esteem and Appreciation of Services… to Philippa Chapman… from the Members of Humshaugh Church Choir… dated June 1905”. This hymnal came to the museum as a donation from Edith Shave, a close friend of Miss Chapman. To a lady who served the needs of our community in the days when medical assistance was not near at hand and under challenging conditions, the Breton museum salutes your service.

THE BRETON

BOOSTERMuseum Remembers Health Care Workers

From Allan Goddard

The past few months has driven home to all of us the important role that frontline healthcare workers play in the health and safety of the public.

An import-ant role of the nurses was to provide maternal and child welfare, with pre and post-natal care and the delivery of babies. In addition, the nurses dealt with a wide array of injuries, sickness and other medical needs in the com-munity.

She took her nursing training at the Edmonton General

Hospital and graduated in 1914. After graduation she work at the Lloydminster Hospital, working long hours with few conveniences.

In 1936 she was stationed at Lindale, where served for about four years. Miss Chapman was kept busy with many maternity cases along with the wide array of med-ical needs of the community. She then was stationed at Warburg and in about 1945 came to Breton where she served the community until the early 1950’s. After retir-ing from nursing she moved to Vancouver where she bought a house and cared for her parents. Miss Chap-man passed away in 1980 at the age of 92.

The photo below is of a small Anglican Hymnal which belonged to Miss Philippa A. Chapman. The hymnal was a gift to her when she left England for Canada with her family, from the choir of the church she attended in England as a young adult for her service. The inscrip-tion on the inside cover reads… “A token of Esteem and Appreciation of Services… to Philippa Chapman… from the Members of Humshaugh Church Choir… dated June 1905”. This hymnal came to the museum as a donation from Edith Shave, a close friend of Miss Chapman.

To a lady who served the needs of our community in the days when medical assistance was not near at hand and under challenging conditions, the Breton museum salutes your service.

Nicolas Sarkozy, then President of France, pro-posed a decree that would ban anyone from wear-ing religious symbols of any kind. The decree was aimed particularly at forbidding Muslim women from wearing their traditional burqa with a full-faced veil. However, the decree was broad enough that it would ban any religious symbol.

President Sarkozy’s contention was, that the French people were being divided by a myriad of diverse religious expressions and therefore could no longer focus on their common identity as the people of France. Homiletics Magazine puts it, “The emphasis should be on being French first, secular second and religious a distant third, at best (but probably not at all).” The idea is that the pow-ers that be in France want the people of France to rally around the flag... the nation being the unifying factor rather than the divisiveness of individual reli-gious preferences.

In the July 26, 2010 issue of Time magazine I stat-ed that there was an estimated 5 million Muslims living in France and of those 5 million, 2,000 who wore the full-face Islamic burqa veil. In a country of 65, 447,324 people, 2,000 does not seem to be very many. However, on July 13, 2010 the National Assembly passed a law declaring that “no one can, in the public space, wear clothing intended to hide the face.” The French are wondering what it means to be French.

The bible acknowledges the reality of the existence of our many and varied identities. The inference is that our varied identities can serve to define us and even divide us. So God’s answer to our dissimilar-ities is to focus on our single similarity...our identity in Christ.

Paul wrote, “You are all Children of God through faith in Christ Jesus...there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:26-28, while the world is busy dividing and tearing down, we need to be uniting around that which makes us one, Jesus, and begin building up!

MP REPORTfrom The Office of MP Gerald Soroka, Member of Parliament for Yellowhead

MESSAGE TO MY CONSTITUENTS

While the House will be rising for the summer, my colleagues and I will continue to fight for Canadians and ensure they have the freedom and support that they need to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since this crisis began, I have had many con-stituents reach out to me, saying that they were falling through the cracks in the pro-grams announced by the government. While others, such as seniors and farmers, felt like they were being ignored altogether.

My colleagues and I brought these concerns to the attention of the government. We were able to pressure them into providing support for seniors and amend the eligibility requirements for the CEBA so that more farmers would be able to access it. These are important steps in the right direction, but there is still much more that needs to be done.

As part of my role on the Agriculture Commit-tee, I heard from witnesses pointing out that much of the “support” the government an-nounced for farmers was reallocating funds that were already available through the Agri-Invest, and the money provided for the set aside program barely covered the costs for a few weeks. The business risk management programs for farmers were insufficient before the pandemic. They are not sufficient to sup-port farmers now. The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food will continue to meet through the summer, and we will look for ways in which we can amend these programs to de-

liver better results for Canadians. As the restrictions on public gatherings start to be relaxed, I will be attending events in the rid-ing, schedule permitting. Please reach out to my constituency office at [email protected] or (780) 723-6068 to inform me of any events.
