Principal’s Thoughts Bruce Nield Relieving Principal Appointments I pleased to announce that David McCarron has been appointed as Relieving Head Teacher until the end of the year. I'm sure many in the community have become familiar with Mr McCarron (or perhaps as Macca) over the last two years as he has expanded and developed the Ag plot and its resources. I am also glad that Ben Miller has chosen to become our Year Advisor and take on additional responsibilities in managing the welfare of students in our school. Mr Miller has already begun to increase the opportunities for our students, including the possibility of overseas travel through the 'G'day USA' for Year 9-12 students at our school to take part in a 20 Day Cultural Exchange tour to the United States of America, travelling in January 2016 school holidays. An information day is going to be held for the students on the 15th of September at school at 9.10 am. There will be a parent information day at a later date to be advised in Term 4. School Planning 2015 - 2017 I look forward at the next P&C meeting on the 15 th September at 1:00 pm at the Tooleybuc Sporting Club to discussing with parents and citizens the new School Planning model. The new model will be explained and how it enables the community to participate in a shared vision for our school over the next three years. Your attendance is encouraged and all contributions will examined as part of this process. In our own staff meetings we have found this an interesting experience that has generated productive discussion, as in following the ethos of the government's Local Schools, Local Decisions policy, we are now able to determine the direction of the school with greater freedom and purpose. Formal The Formal this year will be combined with the Year 12 Farewell. The date will be Wednesday 29 th October 2014, invitations will be delivered before the end of the term, guests from outside the school must be approved by the Principal. Primary News Simon Dunn (Assistant Principal) Pre School Orientation

On Thursday we had the Pre School students attend for

their second transition day to 'Big School'. It was great to

see the new faces in the school and the Year 5 students certainly were worn out by the end of the day.

Performance

On Friday the students from Foundation to Year 8 had the opportunity to watch the 'Forward to the Past'

performance. It was a fantastic performance and it was great to see the students engaged in the performance.

Nyah Sports Day

On Thursday the 4th of September we are hosting the Nyah Sports Day again. All parents and guests are

welcome to attend and cheer on the students as they put in their best efforts.

Year 5/6 Simon Dunn (Year 5/6 Teacher) It has been a very busy term with the Canberra / Snow excursion earlier on. Recently the students have been very

busy organising the current English group assessment task. The students are in the middle of creating their own

news programs. They have researched an issue of their

choice, written their scripts and are currently working on putting their videos together to create the final product.

Secondary News TAS David McCarron (Teacher) The term has been quite busy in TAS with a number of activities and projects completed. Year 7 Science has just completed a unit of learning on classification and cells. They really enjoyed using the microscopes to discover what different cells look like. 9/10 Industrial Technology-Wood have been finishing off step ladders and book ends. Year 10 have commenced making a tile-topped outdoor table while Year 9 are about to commence making a revolving spice rack.

Year 8 TAS are completing an Agricultural unit focused on vegetable gardens. Each student has constructed and planted their own garden as well as making a sign and designing a logo. Year 8 also spent some time planting 100 trees on the top block. Funding for this was obtained from the NSW Teachers Federation.

9/10 Agriculture have been learning about sheep this term and carrying out husbandry activities. The school has changed its sheep breeding focus to Dorpers, which have been sourced from Echuca, Swan Hill and Bolten. We have also purchased a new calf “Dave” who is now keeping “Charlie “company. As most of you would be aware we are in desperate need of rain as the crops sown earlier in the year are starting to hay off.

12 Industrial Technology – Timber have now completed their major design projects. Liam designed a dog house while John designed a corner table. Both projects will have been marked by the BOS markers this week. Students are now preparing for their trial HSC exams which is their final assessment task.

Visual Art Michailee Nield (Visual Art Teacher) The major project this term for both Year 7 and Year 8 is to create a series of botanical linocuts. Students have made a great start on their projects with the help of Artist in Residence Mr Steve Cole and his wife Li, who have kindly given their time once again to assist the school in the delivery of this unit. Students began the term with a study of various printing techniques, completing a basic botanical monoprint to help them better understand the concept of printmaking. Each class further expanded their understanding of printmaking through Mr Coles’ presentation of his own artworks as well as his practical demonstrations of lino cutting and printing. I encourage everyone to come and admire the final prints when they are displayed in the foyer at the beginning of Term 4.

VET Hospitality Kim Morton (Hospitality Teacher) It was a lovely sunny day on the 19th of August when the Year 11/ 12 hospitality class took a day trip to Mildura. Mrs Morton was driving the school car, along with Courtney, that left at 8.50am Tuesday morning, along the way she did a few stops to pick up Kelsey, Aaron and John and then they were on their way! They arrived in Mildura around 10:30am. The group went straight to Stefano’s Bakery where everyone ordered a delicious treat! Mrs Morton, Kelsey and Courtney ordered a cappuccino and Aaron and John ordered a hot chocolate. Everyone ordered a cake of their choice; the choices that they chose were the lovely crumbly yoyo, a slice of the rich chocolate cake, an orange and poppy seed cupcake, cannoli and gingerbread. After everyone filled their bellies with sugary cakes they went for a walk down to the mall to fill in some time before they went to have an adventure at laser force! At laser force they split into two teams, for the first game it was Kelsey and Courtney against John and Aaron. This was a very competitive game as the boys thought they were going to win, so the girls tried their hardest to prove them wrong. And they did! The girls won in the end, but Aaron was the one with the most hits. In the second game the teams were swapped, John and Courtney against Kelsey and Aaron. Kelsey and Aaron won this game! Aaron won overall! After the two intense games of laser force John and Courtney raced on the arcade racing game, Courtney smashed John much to his disgust! After a quick stop to freshen up, we all jumped back into the car and went off the Rendezvous Restaurant. The restaurant was absolutely magnificent! All the meals looked and tasted perfect! For the entrée Aaron had spiced pork belly, “It was cooked to perfection!” says Aaron. Kelsey has the steamed prawn and shallot dumplings, “I’ll definitely is ordering that again!” says Kelsey. John had the grilled Turkish bread, “It tasted good!” said John. Courtney had the pumpkin, caramelised onion and gorgonzola tart, “Very rich and tasty!” says Courtney. Mrs Morton had the vindaloo and coconut spiced squid, “Delicious!” says Mrs Morton. After everyone’s beautiful entrée it was time to move onto the main. Aaron had a chicken parmigiana, “The best I’ve ever had!” said Aaron. Kelsey had the avocado chicken, “The chicken was juicy and tender!” says Kelsey. John has the crunchy fish and chips; “Very crunchy and filling!” said John. Courtney has the oven baked barramundi on scallop and pea risotto. “Beautiful flavours!” said Courtney. Mrs Morton has the hand rolled and ruff cut pasta. “Rich flavour and very filling!’ said Mrs Morton. When

Career News by Mrs Morton Year 10 Careers Next week most of our Year 10 students will be out on work experience. I wish all the students the best of luck and hope they have an enjoyable and interesting week. All students need to remember they are representing the school and if an issue arises they are to immediately contact myself or the school. They are also reminded to take a copy of the work placement forms to the employer and to complete their work place diary after the week is over. I shall be visiting the students throughout the week and any I don’t get to visit I shall be phoning to see how they are going. All employers will have an evaluation sheet to complete and those students located away from the local area have been given one of these to give to their employer for completion. Year 11/12 work placement Week 9 sees the completion of mandatory work placement with John completing his Hospitality hours at the Tooleybuc Sporting Club and Aaron undertaking his work placement for Electrotechnology in Mildura and then in Swan Hill Week 1 of the holidays. Once again I wish them a rewarding and interesting week. Year 9 TAFE visit Year 9 students have been given a note about a visit to Suni TAFE Swan Hill on the 11th September. This shall help in their future career planning and help them be aware of opportunities in further education at a local area. There is no charge for this excursion with funds coming from a Career Expo grant. Please return the notes ASAP.

APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR NEW MEMBERS Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) is calling for expressions of interest from people wishing to join the Tooleybuc Local Health Advisory Committee.

The Local Health Advisory Committee (LHAC) acts as a link between the community and the local health service and is a great opportunity to advocate for your community, be involved in planning, priority setting and evaluation of strategic and service planning, and provide support for the Local Health Service.

Chair of the Tooleybuc LHAC Yvonne Foley urges those who are passionate about ensuring the Tooleybuc community has a voice in securing support for health care to apply.

“Our committee continues to play an important role in building and sustaining health services in our region,” said Ms Foley. “Our members are a central connection between the community and health service activities. We work with the Tooleybuc Health Service and Medicare Local to identify local service needs, ways to improve access to services and to assist in planning and development.”

The Tooleybuc LHAC also provides valuable input into planning health services and sharing information with the local community.

A/Chief Executive Jill Ludford said MLHD is committed to ensuring that membership of the Committees reflects the broader community. “We encourage applications from all areas of the community,” said Ms Ludford. “Men and women, members of the Aboriginal community, minority or ethnic groups, people with disabilities and representatives from community organisations are all welcome to apply.”

Applicants should be interested in health issues, have strong community links and have good communication skills.

Successful applicants will be appointed for a period up to two years and will be expected to represent the interests of the community and the Health District in preference to their individual interests or the interests of a particular group.

For more information or to apply visit www.mlhd.health.nsw.gov.au/community-support/join-your-local-health-advisory-committee Or contact Community Engagement Manager Setchen Brimson on 02 6933 9100 or email [email protected]

EVA'S FIGHT FOR LIFE Hello everyone, My name is Grace Williams and some of you may remember me having my hair cut a few years back to raise money for the Children's Cancer Centre. It has grown long again and I have decided to have it cut to raise money for a special little six year old girl called Eva Wheatley, who lives in Mildura. Eva was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma at 4 years of age and has been fighting her battle with strength, positive attitude and a big smile ever since. Despite losing her arm to the cancer and undergoing numerous treatments she continues to amaze us all. Eva is using a drug called Cometriq (cabozantinib), which is imported specially for her, it costs around $133 per capsule and she needs to take 10 per week. I am hoping to raise enough money for capsules for one week. I will have my hair cut on the 1Oth October. Hope you can support me in some way. Thank you everyone. You can donate online at: mycause.com.au Eva's fight for life Or post to me at East End, Kyalite NSW 2715
