Page 3: The Bridge - October 2010

I went to a funeral last month. The person had been a very quiet andprivate lady. However, St Anne’s Church was filled to capacity for theservice. Afterwards someone remarked, “I wish I’d known all that abouther earlier”. It turned out that Ann Hyslop, for that is who it was, haddone many things for Bewdley, all of them quietly and unremarked.

It made me think that I should be on the lookout to notice otherpeople who, like Ann, make this town a good place to live. I shall startby leafing through the magazine where, for each event publicised, someone – or three – is beavering away to make sure the event happens. For instance, we’ve been treated to news throughout this year of the celebrations as Guidingreached its hundredth birthday. Think of all those evenings given up to maintaining ourbrownie, guide and scout packs. This month the Bewdley Festival and its Fringe will bring inmany people from outside the town as well as giving us locals a feast of events. It takes atremendous amount of work throughout the year to ensure its success.

And so I could go on. Out of interest I counted up the events in last month’s Bridge andmade it twenty six, and that’s not counting the church activities. That’s an awful lot of unpaidservice to the community. (I might write and tell David Cameron how well Bewdley is doingin his Big Society).

So let’s all say a collective “thank you” to them all and give them our support.

CChhrriissttmmaassDon’t turn over swiftly because you’ve seen the word Christmas! Yes, it’s that time of yearagain when all kinds of Christmas events are promoted, and Traidcraft is no exception.

Saturday, 6th November sees the Traidcraft Christmas Fair in St Anne’s Church, from10am to 4pm and we’d love to see as many of you there as possible.

Gifts are at the heart of Christmas. Christians celebrate God’s gift of Jesus to the worldand we all enjoy the gift of time to catch up with families and friends and to celebrate atthe darkest time of the year. Let’s extend our gift sharing to millions in the developingworld, who are materially so much poorer than we are.

We all like to give gifts to loved ones at Christmas and, if we choose from the fabulouscollection of unique, handcrafted, fairtrade gifts offered by Traidcraft, our gifts mean thatConstantina in Peru, Pushpa in India, Indika in Sri Lanka and Estela in Bolivia and so manymore have the chance of a better life. Read a little of their stories in the new Traidcraftcatalogue, available in St Anne’s now.

At the Christmas Fair we’ll have gifts for all ages as well as festive food treats, Christmascards, wrap and other seasonal essentials.

Home baked cakes will be served all day with light lunches as well. So mark the date inyour diary now - 6th November - and take the strain out of Christmas shopping. Yoursupport really does make a huge difference to so many lives. Thank you.

Making Sparks – The ElectricianI didn’t want to be an electrician at school. I always wanted to be a vet, but the careersmaster at my school told me I would never make it, so instead I went to college tostudy electronics and electrics.

I became a safety officer and travelled the world. I’ve spent quite a lot of time in the FarEast and learned to speak some Chinese, though I think I’ve forgotten most of it by now.

Although it sounds exciting and glamorous, I became rather tired of all those hotelrooms and travel, particularly my last job in this field when I was spending four hours onthe motorway every day, so I took the rather scary step of giving it all up.

For the next year I examined my options, moved to Bewdley and did the necessarytraining to get my Part P, which is the very stringent qualification to do domestic andcommercial electrics.

Now I do far less travel, have formed some very good friends, and am poorer buthappier. I don’t regret my career change for a moment.

What don’t I like? Getting filthy in lofts and under floorboards! It’s surprising tocustomers that a lot of wiring is found in those places. What do I like? Meeting people, doing a good job that will keep people safe, and of course, all those cups of tea!

New Pond in the Garden We filled our new pond up in June and started tosee lots of dragonflies. We watched carefully andsaw them mating and then the female laying eggsunder the lily.

When we came back from holidays we thoughtthat we could see dragonfly larvae at the bottomof the pond.

On 24th August I saw the most amazing sight of adragonfly emerging with pale, crinkly, paperywings. Unfortunately deer had eaten the tall plants while wewere away so it was climbing up the stones, creeping plantsand moss, opening its wings so that it could dry them readyto fly.

The weather turned horrible and it was getting battered andwet so we made a little shelter round the iris so that itcould stay dry from the rain and climb up when it was ready. The next day it was still safe and alive and it had climbedfurther up the iris. It had got darker in colour and now wasmore clearly a dragonfly but we are not quite sure whichspecies. The following day it disappeared: hopefully it flew offto complete its life cycle and impress others with its flightpatterns.

It was amazing to see how nature transformed the larva tothe adult.

Bewdley LibraryThere's a reassuring rhythm to our working year in the library, and October brings the Bewdley Festival.

As part of the Festival we have an art exhibition in our gallery. This town has always supported its young people and we arevery excited that this year's exhibition will be work bystudents at The Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre, inspired by the theme 'Identity'. Come along and have a lookat how much new talent Bewdley has!

After you've enjoyed the artwork, why not look at our range of books covering the subjectof art, from 'how to' books to ones covering specific artists; useful for anyone with artisticleanings or studying aspects of the subject at school/college. These books are usuallyexpensive to buy, so come along and take one out free of charge!

The exhibition will be with us from 4th October until the end of the month. We have alate night opening on Monday evenings until 7 pm, and - it's always worth repeating –please remember that we are closed on Tuesdays!

Bewdley District Girlguiding

Even been a girl guide?- then we want to see you.

Last October Bewdley’s celebrations for 100 years of Girl Guiding worldwide werelaunched with a party in St. George’s Hall. Our plans to do something each month for thecentenary year have been successful and every Rainbow, Brownie, Guide and Leader hastaken part in most of these events, so hopefully in years to come there will be a memoryor two from what has been a fantastic year. Before Stagestruck in October our own closing ceremony in Bewdley will be held inJubilee Gardens. We have permission to go into the gardens in the evening of Wednesday20th October when we shall gather to take part in our Vision event when, nationally, members will assemble at venues around the country at 20.10 on 20.10.2010 to renewtheir Guiding promise.Everybody who has ever been a member of this extraordinary movement for girls isinvited to join us at 8 pm. Guiding in Bewdley started in 1924 so there must be quite afew women out there.

Please come if you can, if not set aside a few moments at that timeto think of Girlguiding Worldwide

View from the RedthorneI brought an American friend of mine up to Bewdley recently. He’s an African-Americanchef called Ashbell MacElveen, a chef with an international reputation for gourmet soulfood. His mother’s fried chicken recipe has been raved about by Bill Clinton and hissticky bourbon ribs have been wolfed down by Robert DeNiro.

I decided the only thing to do was introduce him to the local delicacy –The Faggot! Now, Chris Williams, the chef at the Bailiff ’s House serves anexcellent faggot with a good onion gravy and creamy mash. AlthoughAshbell was a little nervous about the name, which has very differentconnotations in America, he found the great Black Country faggot rich, meaty and delicious.

After all, it’s poor-man’s food, making the best use of the leftovers “themupstairs” wouldn’t eat and that’s what Ashbell’s soul food is, too. His greatgrandfather was a sharecropper and his grandfather sold bootleg moonshine to old Joe

Kennedy, father of JFK. He(Ashbell) grew up making the maximumflavour for the minimum cost and he completely related to our localdelicacies, including the faggot.

Over a couple of days, Ashbell fell in love with Bewdley, particularlyenjoying Lightwood Cheese’s superb, fresh cow’s cheese “Chaser” andthe gorgeous pork pies from Highley sold at the Deli.He was delighted with his first “real” fish and chips fromthe Merchants and local strong cider – very different

from the non-alcoholic stuff in the USA. We also paid a visit to LickhillFarm to check out their superb, well-aged meats, which are incrediblyreasonably priced, by the way.

Ashbell’s endorsement means a lot. The acerbic food critic, A.A. Gill gavehis restaurant four stars. He said we should be really proud of our localfood. Bewdley might not compete with Ludlow as a culinary destination, but if we all doour best to buy and eat locally, we can certainly help the local economy and eat very wellindeed.

Celebrating silver anniversaryIn August, Bewdley Petanque Club celebrated its 25thanniversary at its new venue of The Royal Forester, Cal-low HillBewdley and they combined the day with the of-ficial opening. The club began after a group of enthusiasts gathered forthe game of Petanque in 1985, playing on garden lawnsbut after having caused much damage, it prompted themto find a more suitable venue. Today, the league boasts eighteen teams, Bewdley beingone of the original three founder members.

Youth point of viewResidents complain incessantlyabout young the people todaymisbehaving in the streets andcausing damage to publicproperty. Underage and bingedrinking is considered to be oneof the biggest problems inBewdley at the moment. This is

just teenagers being teenagers, and it has tobe accepted whether the public likes it ornot.

Maybe these problems, as some people viewit, would be reduced if the council gave moreopportunities to the young people. There isvery little offered to the younger generationin Bewdley, which is why there are so many ofthem hanging round on the streets ‘being anuisance’. I hear of no youth centres beingrun, which would perhaps reduce the numberof kids out on the town. The council needs toset up youth clubs that run on either a Fridayor Saturday night; the nights when youngpeople are out on the town most prolifically. These are the measures that should be takeninto consideration by the council.

This kind of behaviour will carry on, wecannot stop this, but the council would beable to help the matter, it’s just a case of themagreeing to it.

TreesLast month we looked

at hedges and thismonth at goodreasons for

planting trees.Several spring to mind

and here are someof them: trees help to

define a boundary and collectively createareas of privacy.

Large trees contribute to the landscapeand can often enhance the appearance ofadjacent buildings or disguise the presenceof less attractive ones. In the way theybreathe trees capture carbon dioxide andrelease oxygen to the atmosphere.

Trees of all shapes and sizes provide bothshelter and habitat to urban and ruralwildlife species. As part of the landscapetrees are often seen as route indicatorsalongside paths and roads. And let’s notforget their use as a natural fuel andprovider of timber.

However, should you live in a conservationarea or have a tree with a preservationorder placed on it then the ownership oftrees and what can be done to them needsmore consideration because of the manyrules and regulations that apply in thesecircumstances.

Whilst these rules may seem prescriptiveand an affront to tree ownership they doprotect our conservation area and othersignificant trees from too muchenthusiastic damage.

For further detailed information pleasecontact the relevant local authority as itseems that a cavalier approach may havesignificant financial penalties.

Frazzle updateSunday 15th August posedthe question 'where shallwe walk today?' Theforecast was dry with thepossibility of showers andso Frazzle and I made ourway to the woods. As we walked, I could notstop thinking of my week away inSeptember. It will be hard to leave Frazzle. To date I don't know who will be boardingher. As a 'walker' I know that she will bewell cared for. Guide Dogs always neednew boarders who can take care of a puppywhilst walkers go on holiday or even have aday out shopping! If you feel you could offerthis facility and would like more informationplease ring me on 01299 405023.Frazzle is now eight months old and as anintroduction to her working harness can beseen out and about in the town in hertraining jacket. She is beginning to learn thecommands left and right and appears torecognise the different expectations of herwhen on a training walk and when freerunning. News of Arty is promising as he reaches theend of his advanced training. Based inSouthampton, he has been exposed to anew range of experiences There is still a lotfor him to learn, but the matching processhas begun and he may spend his 'workinglife' on the Isle of Wight. There are manyfactors to consider when pairing dog andowner, including the natural walking speedof both, dog's possible preference for maleor female leader, the working environmentetc. Applying to be a puppy walker was one ofthe best decisions of my life. Many thanks toall of you who support Frazzle's training andthe work of the Association throughdonation and sponsorship.Gabi Wootton

CAFÉ 54 – BewdleyYouth Cafe Café 54 has been open throughout theschool holidays and the young people havebeen busy. They have been to DraytonManor Park and Water World; a graffitiartist came to the Museum to explainGraffiti Art and many of the young peoplecreated their own pieces of art. You can seethem in the Café! It was a huge success andRuth Finney of the Museum and the YouthCafe Manager, Sarah Watton, are arranging asimilar event for half term in October.

Many of the young people went to the Partyin the Park and had an enjoyable and funevening. Sarah and the Trustees are workingtoward providing many more activities, suchas arranging exchange visits with otherYouth Cafés.

A part time assistant has been appointed togive Sarah more time to work with theTrustees on funding applications which areessential to ensure the long term future ofthe Café.

Funding comes from various sourcesincluding small grants from the BewdleyTown Council with major funding from theLottery. I specifically mention this becausemost of my fellow Trustees have received

comments that the Café costs the publicmoney – it does not and in any event is amuch needed facility in the Town and mustnot be allowed to close.

The opening hours are being extended toinclude Tuesday and Thursday eveningsfor pupils of 15 and above.

Friday evenings will be overseen by amember of one of the churches in the Town.

The Trustees are keen to invite anyoneinterested to become a Member of theBewdley Youth Café Association and also toinvite additional volunteers to the Café.Without them we would not be able tofunction as we do.

We now have over 400 young people signedup and using the Café and we will see manynew and exciting projects launchedthroughout the school year. If anyonewishes to come in and look us up, just makeyourself known to Sarah or Jacqui. You willbe most welcome.

Other groups are invited to use the Cafeduring School hours – we hope all can enjoythe facilities we have.

I finally would extend my personal thanks tomy fellow Trustees for their time and effortsin ensuring we carry on.

Tails of a VeterinaryPractice life atRiverside Vets

as seen by Gavin thepractice cat.

Hello to you all, my nameis Gavin and I am the practice cat atRiverside Veterinary Clinic in Bewdley.

This month has been a busy andinteresting one. I was making myinspection rounds the other day and I sawa small, white fluffy thing.

Initially, I was unsure what it was, but mytwo – legged friends at the practice havetold me it is a puppy, which is what dogscall their kittens. This little puppy had beenhaving a nasty bout of an upset tummy.

The vets admitted him to the practice sothat they could keep a close eye on him ashe was so tiny and also so they could starthim on a special diet to treat his tummyupset.

By the afternoon the puppy was veryenergetic and talkative, so I think he wasfeeling better. His humans took him homelater in the afternoon as the vet said hewas improved enough to go home.

He has since been back to have his secondpart vaccinations and was feeling very well.He was a little bit bouncy for me so Iretreated upstairs.

His humans are getting him thevaccinations so that he will be protectedfrom diseases such as distemper andparvovirus.

Off to snooze in a patch of sun now,

Gavin.

So what do I do?Some of us have 9 to 5 jobs; some don’t.

Our neighbours might wonder about mine.

The car can be in front of the house all day;or gone for several days.

Sometimes I get into it smartly dressed;sometimes it’s jeans and other ‘rugged’clothing.

I move odd collections of assorted kit intoand out of the ‘mobile office-laboratory’.

Depart/return often distinctly early/late.

Traffic permitting, if I cross Bewdley Bridge Iwill glance quickly at river level. Whether ornot it has rained, influences what people buy.

I’ve delivered the Bridge for a few years now- erratic professional life gets in the way offurther Bewdley-support activity.

Oops - run out of space before saying what Ido. If Editor reports any interest, I canalways try to offer a bit more another time.

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 6TH SEPTEMBER 2010

Grant from Wyre Forest District Council

Along with all Parish and Town Councils within the area of Wyre Forest, Bewdley Councilresponded to a consultation from the District Council as to the future of grants which couldbe withdrawn. This year the Town Council is due to receive more than £10,000 in grantsfrom the District and consequently whilst understanding the District Council’s need tobalance its own books, concern was expressed as to the knock-on effects within Bewdley ifthose were to be curtailed.

Fishing – River Severn

In response to advice from the Police, the Council agreed to approach the EnvironmentAgency to carry out checks from time to time to ensure that everyone fishing in the RiverSevern must be in possession of the relevant permit either for the season or for the day

Vandalism - Hanging Baskets

It’s a sad fact of life that Bewdley has its fair share of vandalism and anti-social behaviourmuch of which goes unreported and the culprits never caught. However, that’s not always thecase. Last month three of the hanging baskets in Load Street were ripped off the lamppostslate at night. The incident was reported and captured on CCTV. The Police arrested theculprit and he was ordered to recompense the Town Council with the full cost ofreinstatement which he has paid.

Jubilee Gardens

The Council agreed to look at working with the District Council to improve the facilities forsummer events such as “Music In The Park” especially in times of wet weather.

Licensing Act 2003

The Home Office has issued a consultation document on “rebalancing” the Licensing Actgiven concerns about control of licensed premises and the “drinking culture” that hasbecome prevalent. The Town Council welcomed the prospect of giving local Councils and thePolice much stronger powers to remove licences from premises causing problems and tohave a much greater say in deciding what opening hours should be locally.

Mentorlink – a volunteerwrites

When I finished work seven years ago Ifound to my slight surprise that I missedthe contact with young people. I had beenworking with children for all of my workinglife and now it had gone a bit quiet.

At that point I saw that Andrea Maddockswas looking for volunteers for her newly-established Mentoring Service. I contacted her and – well, have beenspending a morning a week in the companyof teenagers ever since.

As always when one takes up a voluntaryjob, the volunteer gets at least as much out

of it as the organisation one works for. Iget the chance to flex my empathy muscles,be privileged to hear a young person’sconfidences, keep a hold on what life is likefor them these days and be welcomed intothe Mentorlink family which is a very goodplace to be.

I hope in return I give the young people myundivided and unconditional attention; even,on rare occasions, help and advice. (Thelast piece of advice I gave to my menteewas a really foolproof recipe for bakedpotatoes). I hope I treat them seriously butinformally and make the hour they spendwith me worth their while.

I would like to continue mentoring for agood while yet. Life would be a great dealmore boring without it.

OOccttoobbeerr iinn tthhee ffoorreessttThis is the season for one of the mostdramatic events of the forest year, when thefallow deer begin the rut.

The bucks meet at traditional rutting standswhere they will challenge and fight todetermine who should become thedominant buck, earning the right to matewith does in the area. You may come acrossthese stands as you walk in the forest: arubbing tree or stump surrounded by wornareas; or you may hear the strange groaningcries of the bucks as they issue theirchallenges.

Other evidence includes frayed saplings anddamaged bark where bucks have scentmarked, tracks and skid marks at the sceneof a fight or muddy wallows surrounded bytracks. This can sound quite intimidating butI can reassure you that the bucks have theirminds on one thing and are not likely tonotice your presence!

The old Deer Museum has been moved toCallow Hill where it will re-open as theWyre Wildlife Museum for special occasions.

The first special event of the month is GrowWith Wyre’s Autumn Festival on 2ndand 3rd October, which will see theForestry Commission’s Wyre Forest VisitorCentre and new Discovery Centre buzzingwith activity.

There will be horse logging, charcoal making,The Earth Heritage Trust’s Rock and FossilRoadshow, chainsaw carving and greenwoodturning on a pole lathe: all happening from11am to 4pm on each day.

In this wonderful fruiting year which broughtback memories of the heyday of the cherryorchards, local apple and pear growers arebeing encouraged to bring their own fruitfor juicing and also to have the varietiesidentified by experts.

Please bring three examples of the fruit foridentification and considerably more forjuice production! There will also be localproduce for sale, autumn-inspired crafts foradults and children and seed gathering:families will be encouraged to go off into theforest and collect as many kinds of treeseeds as they can and then choose one ortwo to grow in a pot made of recyclednewspaper.
