Sav-on Drugs manager HugoConstantino waited two years to be placedon the lung transplant waiting list, over-coming a series of health-related obstaclesto be listed. Unfortunately, his stay on thelist was brief, as he died waiting for the giftof a life-saving donated organ.

During his 33 years with Sav-on, Hugotrained over 300 up-and-coming managersand was truly loved by his staff. AfterHugo s passing, his son Victor wrote a let-ter to all Sav-on employees asking thatrather than send the family flowers or cards, they take the time to educate themselvesabout organ donation so that others willreceive life-saving transplants.

My family and I have come to vieworgan donation as the ultimate act of loveand charity, but we leave you to make yourconclusions, wrote Victor. It is our fer-vent hope, however, that you will ultimate-ly share our view and become an organdonor yourself. Even if you conclude thatorgan donation is not for you, we can thinkof no better testament to my father s mem-ory than assisting others in donating life.

Victor s letter inspired Sav-on andAlbertsons to raise over $16,000.00 inHugo s honor, with a check presentation toOneLegacy employees at Sav-on sScottsdale, Ariz. headquarters. InDecember, a team of Sav-on managers andemployees joined the Constantino family todecorate the Donate Life Rose ParadeFloat. In addition, more than 1,500 Sav-onand Albertsons associates have signed upon the Donate Life California Registry aspart of a challenge in honor of Hugo.

Sav-on s support of donation continuesinto April s National Donate Life Monthwith the in-store sale of Donate Life greenbracelets and the entry of a large Sav-on/Albertsons team at the Donate LifeRun/Walk in April.

Last October, community develop-ment coordinators Sabrina Ho, KathleenHostert and Vanessa Van Nguyen organ-ized two clergy meetings to launch DonorSabbath season and help clergy under-stand organ and tissue donation in a reli-gious context.

Sabrina Ho hosted seven houses ofworship at Garfield Medical Center, withmany representing the nearby Chinesecommunity. Four newspapers were inattendance to write about the Buddhistand Christian perspective on donation.Venerable Ashin s Buddhist perspectivefocused on the aspect of Karma and howorgan donation is the highest level of giv-ing. Pastor Hansford Worline spoke onthe Christian perspective of organ and tis-sue donation, including a simple yet pro-found observation: We need to take careof each other.

Represented at the Garfield MedicalCenter clergy meeting were Long BeachBuddhist Temple, Long Beach; ParamiBuddhist Monastery, Rosemead; Los

Angeles Buddhist Union,Rosemead; Hsi LaiTemple, Hacienda Heights;Tzu Chi Foundation;Calvary ResurrectionalMissionary BaptistChurch, Compton; andAssembly of Christ forChinese EvangelismChurch, Temple City. The clergy meeting at Mater Dei HighSchool in Santa Ana provided the oppor-tunity for members of all religious back-grounds to participate on the importanceof sharing organ and tissue donation withtheir church. Representatives from acrossOrange County attended the event andheard firsthand the growing need fororgan donation from kidney transplant

surgeon Dr. Ervin Ruzics of St. JosephMedical Center in Orange; PastorChristopher Smith, who is on dialysis;and Chaplain Jon Westholme of UCIMedical Center.

These inaugural clergy meetings rep-resent a promising start to OneLegacy sconcerted efforts to appeal to the inter-faith community.

still wishes they had hugged each othergoodbye instead of simply shaking hands.

During this difficult time of emotionalturmoil, Mr. and Mrs. Gau made the extraor-dinary choice of agreeing to donate theirson s organs. As I look back, even thoughhe is gone, the fact that his organs are con-tinuing to help someone else live a good lifemakes it much more real that he is not reallygone. Instead, part of him is still alive, stillhere with me and my family on Earth, saysMr. Gau.

In 2003, the Gau family had the honor ofrepresenting the Southern California com-munity at the National Donor RecognitionCeremony in Washington DC. Mr. Gau wasawarded a medal by the United States

Department of Health and Human Servicesfor his courage and generosity that led to theextension of three lives.

But despite all of this, many of the Gaufamily s relatives in the States and in Taiwanstill have a difficult time accepting the ideaof organ donation. They seem to grasp on tothe traditional Chinese thinking that humansshould be buried whole, notes Mr. Gau.

From my experience, I want people toknow that death does not mean an end tolife, said Mr. Gau. Organ donation, in fact, can help your family establish a legacy of theloved one who is no longer around. What isimportant is for people to understand what itmeans to be a donor and how comforting ithas been to my family to know that we madea gift of love on his behalf.

of OneLegacy. The growth in organ and tissue donation translatesdirectly into lives saved and enhanced in our seven-county area.We attribute this growth to the combined impact of national, stateand local initiatives. Media stories on donation also contribute sig-nificantly to rising awareness about the importance of donation andencourage families to reach these life-saving decisions.

A major contributor to OneLegacy s record numbers has been theOrgan Donation Breakthrough Collaborative, a nationwide initiativelaunched in 2003 to save and enhance thousands of lives a year byspreading known best practices to the nation s largest hospitals andto achieve organ donation rates of 75% or higher in these hospitals.

Another key contributor has been rising consent rates, whichhave increased from 49% to 55.5%. Consent rates calculate thenumber of families who agree to donation at the time they areapproached. A related performance measure is the conversion rate, which gauges how many eligible referrals (based on medical suit-ability) result in actual donors; some consented cases result in organsnot being recovered, mainly as a result of disqualifying medical con-ditions. The conversion rate has exceeded the consent rate s steadyclimb, going from 47% in 2000 to 57%, or a 21% increase.

Operationally, a key focus continues to be the optimal medicalmanagement of donors. Last year, nearly 3.3 lives were saved byevery donor. When a family says yes to donation, we owe it tothem to make sure their loved one saves as many lives as possible, said Renee Hawthorne, chief operating officer for OneLegacy. From responding to referrals on a timely basis to ensuring theorgan function of each organ is maintained and improved prior totransplant and by placing the organs with the appropriate recipientquickly, our donation coordinators and support teams are key tomaximizing the generous gift of every donation.

As a result of the outstanding performance of OneLegacy andCalifornia s three other OPOs, the number of patients listed inCalifornia for extra-renal organs actually stabilized for the firsttime in 2005. The number of kidney transplant candidates contin-ues to climb, however, and now number more than 14,000 in thestate and 64,000 nationwide.

While we are seeing real progress toward meeting the demand, the reality is that the availability of donated organs is not keepingpace with the waiting list, said Mone. We will continue to seekout every possible opportunity to make an impact, from collaborat-ing with hospitals to training staff, applying the latest technologyand inspiring the community to donate life. We will continue toexpand our reach to ensure that donor families and transplant recip-ients alike — not to mention their families and communities — benefit from the gift of organ donation and transplantation.

‘Life Transformed’ ShinesLight on Rainy Rose ParadeOn January 2nd, the organ and tissue donation community was representedfor a third consecutive year in the world’s third most-watched entertainmentevent, the Tournament of Roses Parade. The Donate Life float was first envi-sioned in a letter from lung recipient Gary Foxen, who saw a float in“America’s New Year Celebration” as a way to celebrate the gift of life and

honor donor families. Following in the tradi-tion of 2004’s A Symphony of Life and 2005’sMany Families, One Gift, the 2006 DonateLife Rose Parade Float, themed LifeTransformed, featured 23 riders beneath a40-foot-long fallen tree and surrounded bynew life springing forth from its shelter.

Approximately 40 million U.S. televisionviewers and millions more in 150 countrieswatched the parade, as did more than200,000 people who braved driving rain,

which dampened the parade for the first time in 50 years. Approximately 145media stories nationwide reached many millions more. Especially notablewas coverage by Asian and Latino media, which were attracted to theDonate Life float’s distinction as the first in the history of the parade withlogos in both English and Spanish (“Done Vida”).

The 2006 Donate Life float emerged as a national tradition in its own right, with float rider representatives from 13 states and the District of Columbia. In addition, the new Family Circle rose dedication program attracted 308dedications from 36 states. The Donate Life Rose Parade Float Committeelooks forward to continuing the float’s mission to inspire the world to donatelife with our fourth Rose Parade appearance on New Year’s Day 2007.

BY KEN JOHNSON, RNST. JOSEPH HOSPITAL OF ORANGE

The patient was a 25-year-old female who was diagnosed as ababy with Rett Syndrome, a genetic degenerative neurological dis-order. Over the course of years, the disease process had left Jamiewithout the ability to move and with the mental capacity of a six-month-old.

Upon admission to CCU she would be ventilator dependent. After many family conferences with the physician, the family felttheir daughter had no quality of life and they made the difficultdecision to withdraw the ventilator and provide comfort care forher. The mother had discovered that there was a neurologicalresearch center for Rett Syndrome and she desired to donate her

daughter s brain to the research center after her death.

Headquartered at Children s Hospital of Orange County, I

asked the mother if she would like help coordinating the donation

with the research center. I also asked if she had also considered

organ donation, and she had not. However, she was very interest-

ed, so I contacted OneLegacy so they could be available to answer

questions and explain the process in detail. I also contacted theresearch center to coordinate the donation efforts. OneLegacy

arrived that afternoon to talk with the patient s mother, and the

primary researcher from the center also arrived. After explainingthe options, the mother agreed to proceed with organ donation andthe brain donation.

The unit became a beehive of activity as we set in motion all

the paperwork and the steps to make the donation possible. I thinkit was very important for everyone to be aware that the decision towithdraw life support was a decision the family made based on

their recognition that the patient s quality of life was non-existent.The decision to donate her organs was a separate matter.

When I returned the next day, the OneLegacy team was stillthere working. Throughout the day there was a stream of family

and friends to see Jamie and say goodbye to her. Later, wereceived word that the transplant team was flying in and setting upin the operating room. The family said their last goodbyes and wetook the patient to the operating room.

The mother was the only family member who wanted to bepresent in the operating room. Before this, the transplant teamprepped and draped the patient and then stepped out of the room. They were not allowed to begin the organ recovery until a full fiveminutes after the patient expired. If she did not expire within theone hour, she would be returned to her room for supportive care.

After the patient was prepared, the mother was then broughtinto the operating room. She sat with her for a while. The Chaplainoffered a prayer and Jamie was removed from the ventilator. She

was not able to breathe on her own and within a few minutes went

710 O n e L e g a c y > T h e B r i d g e > W i n t e r 2 0 0 6

into cardiac arrest. She was then pronounced dead. After the five

minutes, the mother was escorted out and the transplant teambegan recovery.

In the sadness of losing this patient, I couldn t help but think

of the contrast between the sadness of this family and the joy of

the people that would be recipients of the donated organs. Itseemed to bring a balance knowing that for this family, the loss oftheir daughter was allowing other people to have their prayers

answered. I can only hope that if others are in the difficult position

of withdrawing life support from someone they love, they wouldconsider donation after cardiac death. It is a viable option that canhelp many and bring some closure to the family as they grieve the

loss of their loved one.

Last May, the Donor Family Council of the Association of OrganProcurement Organizations (AOPO) approved the use of new ter-minology about donation. The council reasoned that avoidingwords and phrases that cause concern among donor familiesand the general public will increase both understanding andacceptance of the donation process. These terminology updatesare unanimously supported by the American Society ofTransplantation (AST) and American Society of TransplantSurgeons (ASTS) and have been adopted by the AmericanJournal of Transplantation.

The Donate Life Rose Parade Float Committeelooks forward to continuing the float’s mission to inspire the world to donatelife with our fourth Rose Parade appearance on New Year’s Day 2007.

of OneLegacy.

Una ley estatal aprobada el a o 2003autoriz a las cuatro organizaciones nolucrativas de recuperaci n de rganos deCalifornia a establecer y administrar unregistro electr nico.

The mem-bers, each clad in Donate Life T-shirts, received ample camera timeand presented one of the shirts tohost Bob Barker. The group alsogave him long stem roses in honorof the Donate Life Rose ParadeFloat, which inspired him to reflecton being CBS’s parade TV com-mentator for 16 years. Lois Foxenwas called as a contestant butover-bid and did not get to go up onthe stage. The group met many ofthe 300 people in the audience anddiscussed organ and tissue dona-tion with them.
