Year 3/4 Ashlea Bruton (Class Teacher)

We have had a great Term 2 so far in Year 3/4 . In English, we have been amazed at how Visual Literacy is made up of so many complex elements that ‘Show, not Tell’. We have been closely analysing a variety of images from different modes of text. We are able to identify the cues that the illustrator has used by looking at facial expressions, body language, colour and image angels.

In Mathematics, we have been focusing on subtraction, addition and multiplication. We have been busy bees learning our times tables for our weekly ‘Wild West Tables Challenge’. Well done Tara for finishing on top of the ladder this week.

Secondary News Bruce Nield (Head Teacher) Fairfax Notes will going home this week for Fairfax participants to fill in regarding photo permission and dietary requirements. The Fairfax artist assigned to our school is Ryan McRobb. The dates for our first workshop next term are the 31st of July and the 1st of August, with a second intesive workshop being held on the 28th and 29th August. Debating A Gala Day to complete the 5/6 debates from the zone round will be held on Thursday the 17th July (Week 1 Term 3) at Deniliquin North Public School. In our first debate it will be Mayrung vs Tooleybuc and in our second debate, Finley vs Tooleybuc. Students are reminded to bring their sheets to debating practice so that students can adequately prepare for their particular speaking role and team planning responsibilities. Senior English This term in English Studies students have being studying 'English and the Web'. In this unit they have been contributing to class discussion through a wiki and creating new digital texts of their own. In the future, much learning and training in employment is conducted online, and this elective has been chosen so that these students will be equipped to engage with the learning format of the 21st century in many professions and trades. VET (Electrotechnology) We currently have one student studying Electrotechnology through Sunraysia Institute of TAFE, Mildura Campus. In this course, students have been learning the basics of WHS and d.c circuits this semester. Aaron is seen in the photo holding a task he has recently completed.

Aaron with his completed circuit task.

Years 7 -10 English Wrap Christine Connellan (English Teacher) Earlier in Term 2, the Year 7 English class were involved in a Writing unit. They honed their skills in stating an opinion, presenting an argument and writing a letter of complaint, a persuasive exposition and a persuasive discussion/debate. They also developed their creative writing skills through composing several narrative pieces. Currently, they are engaged in a film study based on The Sandlot, a heart- warming story about a group of pre-teen baseball fanatics, who find themselves faced with a dilemma, in which they discover the value of team work and problem solving. The students are currently creating an advertising poster which persuades others to view the movie. In the latter weeks of the term, Year 7 will study Window, by Jeannie Baker, a picture book which alludes to a number of issues related to sustainability. This study will conclude with the students creating their own picture books with a sustainability theme. Year 8 students have composed some very well structured, evidence-based responses to Albert Facey’s autobiographical novel, A Fortunate Life. In the latter half of the term, the Year 8 class has turned their attention to a study of My Place, by Nadia Wheatley and Donna Rawlins, a picture book about history, tradition, change and sustainability. It offers a retrospective focus on the successive inhabitants of a house in inner city Sydney, beginning in 2008 and spanning back to 1798... and beyond to the families who lived in huts, in the same place, before those times. The students will then create a visual text which reflects their own time, place and heritage. Year 9 began the term with an Advanced Writing Unit. They sharpened their skills in persuasion in the forms of letter writing, promotional posters, discussion writing, opinion piece articles and argumentative essays. They also dabbled in the effective use of narrative voice to write an engaging story. This unit culminated in presenting a persuasive

opinion on an essay topic centred on the novel, Came Back to Show You I Could Fly, by Robin Klein. They have now embarked on a study of Steven Herrick’s, by the river, a poignant anthology of poems, which chronicle the life of a teenage boy who lives in a rural, riverside community – not unlike Tooleybuc!

Year 10 students enjoyed studying the extraordinary story of Anh Do’s journey from starvation and a near death pirate attack, to the ups-and-downs of refugee life in Australia, being offered a position in one of Australia’s most prominent law firms, before he became one of this country’s best-loved comedians. The Happiest Refugee is a hopeful story that tells us that in a country, like Australia, you can be who-ever you set out to be. After studying refugee experiences and analysing the asylum seeker issue, the students created an information pamphlet. Students are now polishing their drama skills, as well as developing the understanding and empathy involved in establishing a considered viewpoint on moral dilemmas, such as those presented in Brian Clark’s play, Whose Life is it, Anyway? This study will culminate in a journalistic opinion piece.

Term 2 has also seen a very enthusiastic bus load of students from Years 3 to 10 embark on the long journey to Melbourne with Ms Bruton, Mr Dunn and Ms Connellan, as well as parent-helpers Mrs Hickey and Mrs Andrews, to enjoy the theatre performance of “Wicked”. Congratulations to the students, who were a credit to their parents and the school. It was great to experience the magical story-telling of a professional theatre ensemble as they wove the tale of life in Oz, in the days before Dorothy came along. “Wicked” is the untold story of the witches of Oz. The audience learnt that things are not always as they seem. The play explored the themes of friendship, trust and tolerance, the use of propaganda and the manipulation of public opinion. Was the

Wicked Witch of the West really wicked? Was Glinda the Good really so perfect? Why was the Lion so cowardly? How did the Tin Man lose his heart and the Scarecrow his brain? And why did the Wicked Witch of the West want the jewelled shoes so much? “Wicked” explored all of these questions and more.

Try A Trade By Rochelle On Friday the Year 10 students attended the ‘Try A Trade’ convention in Mildura. We participated in a number of trades including plastering, bricklaying, carpentry, plumbing and many others. We then went on a tour of the Suni TAFE where we walked around the TAFE and saw many courses underway. We also looked at the accommodation for the TAFE and LaTrobe University students. It was good to have a look at the range of opportunities that are available to us. Overall it was a very successful day. Thanks to Mrs Morton for organising the day and to both Mr Nield and Mrs Morton for transporting us there.

Career News Kim Morton (Careers Teacher) Students have been busy undertaking a number of Career events recently. Year 9 & 10 students attended a talk on accountancy about the opportunities available in this field of work. Three students have applied to undertake work experience in this field and successful applicants will be notified shortly. Year 10 students attended a ‘Try a Trade Day’ run by SMGT Mildura and they also had an opportunity to visit Suni Tafe and Latrobe Uni in Mildura. Year 11 Hospitality students are currently undertaking Work Placement at different times throughout the remaining weeks of this term. School Based Apprenticeships: We currently have one student undertaking a school based apprenticeship in Automotive at Sunrise Agriculture. This is enabling him to complete his Certificate III in Automotive whilst remaining at school. This is a wonderful program for those students wanting to undertake a trade but who also wish to remain at school.

IS ORAL HEALTH A PATHWAY TO DENTISTRY AT MELBOURNE? The Bachelor of Oral Health does NOT qualify students as dentists and is NOT a pathway to the Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Melbourne. It is a 3-year degree with four main components: clinical and preventative dentistry, dental and health sciences, social sciences and health promotion, and vocational clinical practice. Oral health allows graduates to practice as an oral health therapist, a dental hygienist or a dental therapist. Info: www.dent.unimelb.edu.au For information about pathways to the Doctor of Dental Surgery see: www.coursesearch.unimelb.edu.au/pathways/2-dentistry. WHAT CAN I DO WITH A PUBLIC HEALTH AND HEALTH PROMOTION DEGREE? Public health and health promotion combine a range of activities directed at improving the health of people in the population. Some well-known activities include those run by organisations such as SunSmart, TAC, and QUIT. Public health seeks to understand and act on the social and environmental factors that cause poor health, with the factors that create and sustain good health. Those suited to this occupation have good communication and negotiation skills, can relate to people from different backgrounds and be able to work as part of a team. Graduates work for government, health agencies, community services, universities, aid organisations, and not-for-profit organisations. Suitable courses to consider are Deakin University B. Public Health and Health Promotion, La Trobe B. Health Promotion, Monash B. Health Promotion, Swinburne B. Health Science (Public and Environmental Health), and ACU B. Applied Public Health. ATARs required for these degrees range from about 55 to about 75. Pre-requisites vary from university to university. Thinking of being a plumber, carpenter, electrician, motor mechanic, refrigeration mechanic, tiler, brick layer, lift mechanic, or one of many other trades people? Most students think first of being a carpenter, an electrician or a plumber. However, there are many others to choose from. Apprenticeships generally take four years, but, if an apprentice is competent, they may be able to complete sooner. Plumbing and electrical apprenticeships take four years. Employers often look for three things in an applicant: Year 12 completion (VCE or VCAL), being 18 with a driving licence and vehicle, and completion of a pre-apprenticeship course. Pre-apprenticeships can be completed in about four of five months at TAFE (after finishing school) or sometimes while at school. Finding an employer can be a challenge. Suggestions are to try family contacts, sporting club contacts, letting people know that an apprenticeship is being sought. Alternatively, Group Training Organisations can often assist. These organisations employ apprentices and lease them to suitable employers. For details see: www.grouptraining.com.au. Another useful website is: www.aapathways.com.au. INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE OF HOTEL MANAGEMENT – ICHM prepares students for careers at the top end of the international hotel industry. Located in Adelaide, it is the only Swiss Hotel Association School outside Europe, and offers internationally recognised qualifications (B. International Hotel Management and B. Business (Hospitality Management). If you would like to find out more about the College and it’s degrees, you can attend an ICHM Career Week at the College. When: 7-11 July or 29 Sept to 3 Oct; Where: ICHM, Days Rd, Regency Park, SA; Cost: $595 (deducted from first year fees if you enrol); Info: www.ichm.edu.au.

VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS 2014 The New South Wales Government provides much of the necessary equipment and materials for the efficient running of the school. However, to keep up to date with the latest textbooks and to supply materials for such subjects as technics, craft and food technology, parents are asked to make a voluntary contribution. These are reviewed each year and kept to an absolute minimum, and are payable at the beginning of each school year. These contributions are important in ensuring that we can optimize learning opportunities for students. Your cooperation in this regard is greatly appreciated.
