The Brief Semester 1 Week 3TRANSCRIPT
Hello everyone! Welcome to another jam-packed edition of The Brief.
Throughout this week, the Law Society will be hosting a number of
international law firms who will be giving presentations on clerkships
and graduate recruitment opportunities, as well as the annual Hong
Kong Law Fair. These are some of the biggest items on our Careers
calendar, so be sure to check them out. Week 3 is also the last chance
you have to get your LawSOC sticker, so if you haven’t done so
already, visit our office (Room 305) between 1-2pm all week except
Wednesday, to pick one up and secure your access to all the amazing
events we have lined up for you this year!

Justice Talks: The Hon Ronald Sackville Hear from former Federal Court of
Australia Judge, Justice Sackville, on
his ideas of justice as they have been
influenced by the various roles he has
held throughout his career - legal
academic, Royal Commissioner, law
reformer, practising barrister and
Judge in Australia and elsewhere.
He will consider the law as a force for
social justice, the notion of “access to
justice”, the constraints on Judges who
promise to do “justice according to
law” and Australian concepts of the
rule of law.

Court of Conscience Graphic Designer
The Law Society is seeking talented,
creative and enthusiastic graphic arts
students to join the Court of
Conscience team as graphic designers
in 2013! Court of Conscience is an
annual publication run by the Law
Society that aims to give students and
academics the platform to express their
praise and concern about social justice
issues. As a law student-run initiative,
we are looking for creative counterparts
who can make the publication look
bold, sophisticated and artistic.
It is a volunteer role. Experience with
graphic design and software is
necessary and needs to be balanced
with enthusiasm and commitment to
make this publication fantastic!

Planning Law Committee for 2013. His

questions. This is a fantastic

questions and gain insight into his

The 2013 Hong Kong Law Fair is a
careers fair targeted at undergraduate
law students and JDs, in particular
those in their penultimate year with an
interest in pursuing a career in Hong
Kong.

and gain valuable insight into the

Red Earth Connections
Red Earth Connections is seeking Trip
Leaders to lead a school trip to remote
Indigenous Australia in the June/July
and September holidays. If selected,
you an the school group will work on a
volunteering project and immerse
yourselves in the oldest culture in the
world. You and another successful
candidate will lead the high school
students during an 11-day trip to Cape
York or Arnhem land. Red Earth covers
all expenses for this leadership position.

FDI International Arbitration Moot The FDI International Arbitration Moot is
an annual international arbitration moot
focused on the growing area of
international investment law. The FDI
Moot is a great opportunity, not only to
develop your advocacy skills, but also to
network with investment and arbitration
law experts from around the world as
well as to get a taste of this interesting
area of law.
The Asia-Pacific Rounds will take place
in Seoul, Korea at the Korean
Commercial Arbitration Board (KCAB)
from August 22-24. The global finals
will be held in October in Frankfurt,
Germany.
For the Asia-Pacific Rounds, teams only
need to submit skeleton briefs (written
submissions under 1500 words). Teams
that progress to the finals will need to
prepare full memorials.

ALSA National Essay Competition The ALSA National Essay Competition is
now open. Essays can be on any legal
topic (3000-12000 words). Submission
requirements and marking criteria can

Advanced Mooting Workshop This workshop is for upcoming
participants in the Intermediate
Mooting Competition or the Senior
Mooting Competition, both of which
will begin later in Semester 1.
It is designed for returning mooters as
well as non-first-year law students who
are coming to mooting for the first
time. The first half of the presentation
will address some of the finer points of
mooting, common pitfalls, and will
answer any questions that you may
have. The second half will involve the
deconstruction of a mooting problem
scenario.
