Refection: St Philip Neri When St Philip entered the priesthood, he went to live at S. Girolamo, where a staff of chaplains was supported by the Confraternity of Charity. Each priest had two rooms assigned to him, in which he lived, slept, and ate, under no

rule save that of living in charity with his brethren. Among Philip's new companions, besides Persiano Rosa, was Buonsignore Cacciaguerra (see "A Precursor of St. Philip" by Lady Annabel Kerr, London), a remarkable penitent, who was at that time carrying on a vigorous propaganda in favour of frequent Communion. Philip, who as a layman had been quietly encouraging the frequent reception of the sacraments, expended the whole of his priestly energy in promoting the same cause; but unlike his precursor, he recommended the young especially to confess more often than they communicated. The church of S. Girolamo was much frequented even before the coming of Philip, and his confessional there soon

became the centre of a mighty apostolate. He stayed in church, hearing confessionsor ready to hear them, from daybreak till nearly midday, and not content with this, he usually confessed some forty persons in his room before dawn. Thus he laboured untiringly throughout his long priesthood. As a physician of souls he received marvellous gifts from God. He would sometimes tell a penitent his most secret sins without his confessing them; and once he converted a young nobleman by showing him a vision of hell. Shortly before noon he would leave his confessional to say Mass. His devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, like the miracle of his heart, is one of those manifestations of sanctity which are peculiarly his own. So great was the fervour of his charity, that, instead of recollecting himself before Mass, he had to use deliberate means of distraction in order to attend to the external rite. During the last five years of his life he had permission to celebrate privately in a little chapel close to his room. At the "Agnus Dei" the server went out, locked the doors, and hung up a notice: "Silence, the Father is saying Mass". When he returned in two hours or more, the saint was so absorbed in God that he seemed to be at the point of death.

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION A spiritual communion is a devotional practice whereby we exercise the mind and heart in desiring to receive Christ in the Holy Eucharist, either as a preparation for participation in the Mass, or when it is not possible to receive Holy Communion. Since Christ himself is the ultimate goal of every human desire, the value of a well made spiritual communion is very great. "When you do not receive Communion and you do not attend Mass, you can make a spiritual communion, which is a most beneficial practice; by it the love of God will be greatly impressed upon you." (St Teresa of Avila, the Way of Perfection, Ch35). St John Vianney taught that making a spiritual communion has an effect like that of blowing on embers to make them flame up again, so the love of God flames up in the heart by means of the spiritual communion. The most generally known form is that of St Alphonsus de Liguori:

"My Jesus, I believe that You are truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, please enter spiritually into my soul. I welcome you, I love and adore You, never permit me to be separated from You. Amen."

WE PRAY FOR:-Those who are recently deceased:

William (Bill) KEEN, Doris HUEZO, Joy CULLEN,

Solange de ROBILLARD and Maria DALL’ALBA.

Sr M Raymond RSM, Gaynor KANE and John MOSS. Those who are sick: Ksenia BORODIN, Rex BOWEN, Verna BOWEN, Clare CLARK, Duncan CARSTENS, Ruth Mary DALY, Sylvia DE LUCA, Shannon EMSLIE, Mark FARRAH, Jane FARRELL, Maria FARRELL, Bryan FITZPATRICK, Joan FLEW, Anne FRANETTOVICH, Gwen GAIR, Gloria GARR, Bronte GREER, Brent HILL, Marlene JOHNSTON, Tony LEVICK, Ben McFADDEN

((Ireland) Marie MITCHELL, Barbara MASON, Fr Ron MOLLISON, Mila PICKARD, Ron ROFE, Joan ROONEY, Joan RYAN, Rosa Maria SANTOS, Joan TATHEM, Norma TORPEY, Josephine & Bill WRIGHT and Matthew ZEMEK.

All the faithful departed.

Please call the Parish Office to have names placed on any of the

lists above or to remove someone who is now well.

ACT OF PERFECT CONTRITION

Through an act of Perfect Contrition you can receive the forgiveness of your sins outside of confession, even mortal sins, provided that you determine yourself to correct your life and make a firm resolution to go to

sacramental confession as soon as you can, when it becomes possible. Remember, these are extraordinary measures only, for times when a priest is truly not available to you.

Perfect Contrition is sorrow and detestation of sin arising out of the love of God. One way of exciting this contrition in our hearts is by considering the passion of Jesus Christ and making acts of love for Him. We can also think of the infinite love which God has for us, and express sorrow in our heart in

the presence of this great love which we have offended.

O my God, I am heartily sorry for all the sins of my life simply because by them I have offended You and Your infinite love. I desire never to offend You again. Grant that my soul my enter into Your grace, and remain united to You forever. Amen.

MASS READINGS First Reading: Ecclesiasticus 4: 11-18

Wisdom brings up her own sons, and cares for those who seek her. Whoever loves her life, those who wait on her early will be filled with happiness. Whoever holds her close will inherit honour, and wherever he walks the Lord will bless him. Those who serve her minister to the Holy One, and the Lord loves those who love her. Whoever obeys her judges aright, and whoever pays attention to her dwells secure. If he trusts himself to her he will inherit her, and his descendants will remain in possession of her; for though she takes him at first through winding ways, bringing fear and faintness on him, plaguing him with her discipline until she can trust him, and testing him with her ordeals, in the end she will lead him back to the straight road, and reveal her secrets to him.

The Word of the Lord

Response: Thanks be to God

Responsorial Psalm (Said by all)

Praise, O servants of the Lord, Praise the name of the Lord! May the name of the Lord be blessed Both now and for evermore!

From the rising of the sun to its setting Praised be the name of the Lord! High above all nations is the Lord, Above the heavens his glory.

Who is like the Lord, our God, Who has risen on high to his throne Yet stoops from the heights to look down To look down upon heaven and earth?

From the dust he lifts up the lowly, From the dungheap he raises the poor To set him in the company of princes Yes, with the princes of his people.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1: 18-25

The language of the cross may be illogical to those who are not on the way to salvation, but those of us who are on the way see it as God’s power to save. As scripture says: I shall destroy the wisdom of the wise and bring to nothing all the learning of the learned. Where are the philosophers now? Where are the scribes? Where are any of our thinkers today? Do you see now how God has shown up the foolishness of human wisdom? If it was God’s wisdom that human wisdom should not know God, it was because God wanted to save those who have faith through the foolishness of the message that we preach. And so, while the Jews demand miracles and the Greeks look for wisdom, here are we preaching a crucified Christ: to the Jews an obstacle that they cannot get over, to the pagans madness, but to those who have been called, whether they are Jews or Greeks, a Christ who is the power and the wisdom of God For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.

The Word of the Lord Response: Thanks be to God

Gospel Acclamation: Alleluia, alleluia! Happy are you, O blessed Virgin Mary; without dying you won the martyr’s crown beside the cross of the Lord. Alleluia!

Gospel: John 19: 25-27

Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. Seeing his mother and the disciple he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother, ‘Woman, this is your son’. Then to the disciple he said, ‘This is your mother’. And from that moment the disciple made a place for her in his home.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

Memorial Acclamation: Number Three Save us, Saviour of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrection you have set us free.
