As we begin our eighth year in ministry together, I shared that I believe the
Lord has used these last seven years to heal wounds and establish a firm
foundation. Now I believe the Lord is ready to release manifold increase
upon our ministries, but that will only happen if we are willing to partner
with God in this new season. I see this increase touching every aspect of our
ministry together. We have the potential to grow not only in numbers but,
more profoundly, in depth of faith together. I see new ministries added to
our congregation reaching new people. I see current ministries bearing
more fruit than ever before. The Lord is calling us to be the spiritual
heartbeat of the Brighton community showing our neighbors what it truly
means to follow Jesus.
That leaves much for us to do. Most importantly, we must all grow in our
willingness and our boldness to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Over the
next two months we will spend time exploring why, how, and where to share
the Gospel. Our sermon series over this time is called “Let Your Light
Shine” and comes from Jesus teaching in Matthew that we are to, “…let
your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give
glory to your Father in heaven.” For this manifold increase to happen we
must let our light shine in our community and we will spend eight weeks
learning to do this.
We will also have a more in depth study during Sunday School on how to
make sharing the Gospel a part of our Christian lifestyle. We will work
through the curriculum called “Tell Someone” produced by Pastor Greg
Laurie. This class will start on July 16, in the Library, after our fellowship
time.
I want to challenge you to prayerfully enter these next eight weeks thinking
about our role in building the Kingdom of God in this place. What are your
wildest dreams for our ministry together and do you have faith that God can
make it happen? I do and that is why I can’t wait to roll up my sleeves and
get to work on this eighth year with you.
Yours in Christ,
Rev. Joel

We will not be having regular meetings during the summer months, however there are several events to note:
A Day Apart will be July 15, at Fort Morgan UMC. We will be sharing transportation. A signup sheet is located on the main bulletin board and we encourage all ladies to sign up and join us for what has always been a most inspiring day. A fee of $10 can be paid to Carol Fariello or Marilyn Ames. This covers your registration as well as all your food for the day. We will be leaving the church at 8:00 AM that day
and will probably return around 3:00 PM.
We will continue to collect feminine products for delivery when school resumes in the fall. Please help us with this important mission.
Our meetings will resume on September 2 at 9:15 am. This is an important meeting as we will be planning for the District Annual Meeting to be held September 30. This meeting will be held here at Brighton UMW and we will be responsible for providing for both morning coffee, fruit and pastries, as well as a noon meal and an afternoon snack. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
And now I wish each and every one of you a wonderful summer. May you find time to relax and glory in this beautiful world God has given us.

YOUTH INFO! 2017 Youth Mission Trip
This year the youth chose to go to Walsh, CO for their mission trip. Where in the heck is Walsh, Colorado you may ask - well it is as far southeast as you can go in Colorado without leaving the state. We arrived on June 7th to a welcome potluck dinner from the Walsh United Methodist Church. One of the many things the fine folks of Walsh know how to do is eat - and they kept us in food for the week we were there. Thank you Walsh. We had six youth from our church go on the trip- Ginny Cominsky, Katie Hix, Angelena McClendon, Mike Shealy, KyAnn Swink, and of course, Mason Biesecker joined us. The main reason for going to Walsh was to help Linda Krayenhagen with her VBS program, which by the way was a huge success - they had 63 kids show up for VBS which is amazing when you consider that Walsh has the population of 524. When we weren't decorating the church or working on VBS we were helping people in the community with doing yard work, planting flowers, cleaning garages and best of all rounding up tumbleweeds. The kids helped Pastor Terry with the church service at Two Buttes and Walsh on Sunday. We did a lot of fun activities also: going to the pool to cool off (it was close, if not over, 100 degrees everyday) a scavenger hunt, a hay ride, and Walsh was kind enough to have ‘Walsh Days’ while we there. The youth got to rock climb, spray the fire hose, face painting, and pop balloons for money. Best of all we had a lot of time together and were able to get to know one another better, and become closer as a family. Every day we took time to write in our journals and every night we had devotional with Pastor Terry Krayenhagen - thank you Terry. Through all we did and shared we felt closer to God- who can ask for anything else better than that. The kids had a great time and suggested that we go back next year! A special thank you to everyone in the congregation for supporting the various fundraising activities and for all your prayers. Deb Friedholm

Have you ever felt the nudge to be a Stephen Minister? Do you feel compassion for people who
are suffering and look for ways to comfort them? Are you a patient and attentive listener? Do you
have the desire to share your faith journey with another person? Stephen Ministry is looking for
people to participate in a fall training class and we need You! If you would like to find out more
about how you can become a Stephen Minister, contact Pastor Joel or one of your Stephen Lead-
ers, Janice Weinholdt or Sue Slaughter.
Brighton is now connected to other Stephen Ministry programs through the Longmont Stephen Leaders Net-
work. Janice and Sue attended a meeting in mid-June to get to know Leaders from other churches and share
ideas to improve local programs. It was inspiring to participate with churches from several denominations and
hear what they are doing to make Stephen Ministry strong.
BUMC Stephen Ministry has purchased three copies of a new book distributed by the national office titled
“CANCER, Now What?” It is an easy-to-read book covering a multitude of topics and questions for those who
have cancer and their loved ones. Short and informative chapters include:
“You are not alone”
“Telling others about the cancer diagnosis”
“Medical questions to ask and when to ask them”
“Don’t let cancer define you”
“Cancer upsets the family dynamic”
If you know anyone who would like to borrow and read the book, check with a Stephen Leader or Lisa in the
office. We can also purchase a copy for you to keep for $20.
Blessing from Stephen Ministry,

Please welcome Elliot Olinger to the position of Audio Visual Technician. Elliot is a
student at the University of Colorado Denver studying music production and sound
engineering while playing piano as an aspiring musician. He has a vast and varied
experience that we hope will help BUMC reach the next level of audio and visual technology. He is looking
forward to being part of our BUMC family, and we are looking forward to having him!
July 9 is a special Sunday when we will recognize Matt Hunter for all of his contributions and work with our
youth program. Please join us that day as we celebrate Matt and send him off with our best wishes for his next
endeavor. Anyone who has pictures of special activities and projects during Matt’s five-year tenure is asked to
send electronic copies to Lisa by July 5 to be included in a visual remembrance of Matt’s service.
SPRC is advertising and recruiting to fill the Youth Ministry Coordinator positon before September. Please see the Help Wanted ad in this newsletter, and share it with all of your friends and acquaintances. A full job
description and application is available in the church office.

Happy summertime!
‘Packing the pews’ on Communion Sunday, watermelon, fireworks and an ice cream social are a perfect way to start off the month! Just what are we to do for the remaining 27 days of the month? Well
there's plenty to keep us busy well past 5th Sunday sing! Many people in our community need an extra hand with simple things like running to the store, pulling some weeds, changing a light bulb or maybe even visiting on the phone. We do get some requests for specialized services as well. Welding, simple automotive assistance, appliance assistance and pet sitting. Frequently I get requests, but my ‘list’ of those individuals willing and able to help has grown thin. Please give prayerful consideration to sharing your gifts and talents with others. Let me know what you would be willing to assist with. You are needed!
Recently, I was blessed to spend just a few days with the 2017 Freedom Tour cyclists. This is the group that we have hosted here at our church in past years. This years route kept them on the west side of I-25. They ride to support a special place called the Home of Hope in New Delhi, India. This home is located in the red light district, surrounded by brothels. Currently, they provide a "safe house" for the children rescued from the human trafficking industry. They may have been trafficked, or may have been relinquished by a young mother who was trafficked, but each child is now free to be a child, to go to school and to learn a trade, so they can break the chains that bind their lives. This is worldwide problem. I support the cyclists cause because they are making a difference in these 20 lives, but we know that there is so much more to this epidemic.
The problem is in every country, including right here in our land. South Dakota is the worst in the nation for young girls being exploited. Colorado is very high on the charts as we have such a diverse population and we are growing in tremendous leaps and bounds. Additionally, we are smack dab in the center of one of the largest traffic lanes. We have I-70, I-25, I-76, 85, 287 right here, not to mention DIA a stones throw away.
Furthermore, Adams county is even closer to the center of all this turmoil, plus we have a very high level of low income or poverty stricken individuals. This makes them a "target" to those wanting to profit from their circumstances. Drugs are not always the reason why this happens. Helping the family out financially to get out of the "mess" they are in, is a common tactic. That tactic has been used right here within our very own city limits. There is so much information available, but this is one of those subjects we do not want recognize. I tell you, it does happen to young women and men, both right here and across our country and to the far reaches of the earth. In the US, there is only one home for the young men rescued from trafficking. The individuals being trafficked are the ones that get arrested or locked up. Why are we doing that to the victims? Yes, the problem is far beyond what we can handle, but for the ones we do help, it means the world. Someone said that this reminded them of the starfish story...
Again, I ask that you prayerfully consider what tasks you can share with others and let me know. Let your gift out of its box and share it! Be the light in another persons life, God's light. If you don't now how to be the light, let the Holy Spirit guide you through prayer.
Have a firecracker of a month with all of our Lord's summer bounties at their peak!

WOW - It is hard to believe that VBS has come and gone already.
VBS took place June 26th - 30th and what an amazing week it
turned out to be. The theme was Scar Force, which is in reference
to the scars Jesus suffered for our sins that we may have eternal life
with him. We began in the book of Genesis and ended in
Revelations - we covered a lot of ground. On a daily attendance we
averaged 90 kids, 5th grade and under. How exciting is that! At the
same time we had over 50 volunteers over the week, to include
about 25 youth helpers.
Our mission project for this year was to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House, and to kick it off Ronald McDonald himself came on Monday and did a magic show for the kids. We set a goal of $1300.00 and by Friday the kids had done a fantastic job of raising near $1800.00 - way to go kids. On Sunday we challenged the congregation, and with your help we are donating over $2600.00 to the Ronald McDonald House. In addition to the monetary donations collected, we were able to collect over three grocery carts full of non-perishable food for our local food banks! We had so much fun this year and we already have kids coming up to us with suggestions for next year's theme. We would like to give a great big hug and thank you to everyone in the congregation for all the help and support we received for VBS– including all who donated time, items for snacks, words of
encouragement, and most of all your prayers for a successful VBS. All was very much needed and appreciated. Can't wait for next year. Deb Friedholm

The Totes for Hope program provides the distribution of food to school age children on the weekends so they can have nourishment during the weekend. Several studies have shown that students who are hungry do not learn well and lag behind those who are nourished. During the week there are a number of school breakfast and lunch programs to provide nourishment to disadvantaged underfed children. But there is a gap over the weekend. The Totes for Hope program provides food to bridge that gap. The Brighton United Methodist Church has participated in the program for the last several years. During the school year a team of three church volunteers rotate to go to the Food Bank of the Rockies each week to pick up food and bring it back to the Church. The food consist of canned and non-perishable food items which are in case and carton lots.
The church youth take the food out of the cases and put one item of each of six to eight different food items into plastic grocery bags (totes). The youth then pray over the bags. The bags (totes) are delivered to North, South, Southeast, and Henderson elementary schools each week. The schools determine which children and families are in need, and send the bags home with the children on Friday of each week.
We have volunteers providing the plastic bags (totes), a team of volunteers who double bag the plastic bags, the volunteers who pick up the food, the youth who bag the food. On occasion, the congregation is asked to help bag the food during fellowship time, and there’s a volunteer who delivers the food to the different schools. A special sub-committee of the Outreach and Congregational Care committee oversees the program.
Each week an average of a total of 108 totes are delivered to the four elementary schools. With an average of
seven items in each tote, that is approximately 26,460 food items that have been distributed to underfed children this last school year! One mother reported tearfully to a teacher on a Monday morning that she would not have been able to make it through the weekend without the tote, as they did not have any food at home.
Way to go Brighton United Methodist Church!!!!
Thank you everybody who has helped make this outreach program a success.
