“It’s Time to Upgrade”‐ Brookland Federal Credit Union

Well, you asked and YOUR credit union has listened!!! For years, the Board and management of Brookland FCU have listened to the voices of its members when it comes to availability and product offerings. We have made several changes over the years to improve our member services, and now we are ready to take another step towards meeting your requests. We are very pleased to announce that Brookland FCU is growing its product line to better serve its membership through increased availability. We will soon be offering Internet banking and electronic bill pay. In order to achieve these changes, Brookland FCU is about to undergo a complete core data processing change. This change will upgrade our current platform and make it even easier to add additional products in the future. However, this much needed change requires some sacrifice. On Thursday, October 1st and Friday October 2nd, Brookland FCU will be closed. We will resume our normal business hours on Monday, October 5th. We do realize that this will be an inconvenience to many of our members. However, we ask for your patience, and promise that the end result will be worth the brief inconvenience.

Women's Bible Study has had an awesome Summer Bible Study that allowed us to identify the things that hinders our Blessings and God's plans for our lives. We have also Blessed our sisters in need with our excess, we have gone on a Sisterhood Cruise to relax and fellowship with our sisters, we have been revived at the revival and now we are ready to get back in the Word to continue our study on things that are blocking our Blessing for 2010.

After a great revival, If you are serious about developing and/or maintaining your personal relationship with God and you want to win in 2010 you need to come and join us for Women's Bible Study.

Miss Alanti McGill is one of two $1000.00 college scholarship winners from the Columbia HealthCare Auxiliary (CCHCA). Scholarships were presented at the annual “Medical Night Out” banquet held at Seawell’s on July 25, 2009.

Alanti is the daughter of Mrs. Helen Davis and a graduate of Dreher High School. She is currently attending Clemson University as a biology major with plans to become a physician specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. CCHCA is a collection of twelve area church health care ministries whose focus is to reach out to others by giving back to the community. Brookland’s Health and Wellness Guild has been a long standing member of CCHCA. 33 scholarships have been awarded since 1993. Previous recipients from Brookland Baptist are:

“Sisters Embracing Sisters” Brookland Baptist Sisterhood

I am honored to serve as President of the Brookland Baptist Sisterhood. The committee has been working very hard to assure that this years’ events will provide opportunities for the Sisterhood for bonding, support, and spiritual growth. We hope that you are enjoying your experiences with the Brookland Baptist Sisterhood.

As we begin our second year, our aim is to involve more sisters in the planning and implementing of various programs. God has blessed each of us with spiritual gifts, and we would love to provide you the opportunity to volunteer your gifts and services if you so desire.

All members are welcomed to participate in the Sisterhood. If you are not sure if you are a member, and would like more information on how you can participate, visit Brookland’s website at www.brooklandbaptist.org and click on the Sisterhood link under “Ministries.”

Together we will continue to grow and develop the Sisterhood into a true manifestation of our slogan: “Sisters Embracing Sisters” for the benefit of all.


It’s About Spiritual Growth and Sacrificing Self: Brookland’s Young Adult Ministry One of the more vibrant ministries to be found at the Brookland Baptist Church is the Brookland Baptist Young Adult Ministry (B.BY.A.M.). Founded in 2007, with the blessing of Rev. Dr. Charles B. Jackson, Sr., the ministry was established to meet the spiritual needs of young adults in the Brookland ministry, as well as in the Greater Columbia community. In just two short years, the B.B.Y.A.M. has quickly grown into one of the more dynamic and impactful ministries of the church. This ministry has been delighted to engage the community by assisting with the Homeless Ministry, visiting the elderly, and conducting the annual Young Adult Week.

Under the combined spiritual leadership of Rev. Nicky Wilson and Rev. Jeryl Salmond, this ministry regularly has 35 or more participants at its Tuesday evening Bible study. While the ministry was founded for persons aged 19‐35 years of age, there are members who do not fit into this demographic and are valued contributors. The conversations that result from Bible study are often lively and engaging. As a result, the ministry is family centered and definitely Word focused. Ministry members have regularly and cheerfully given of their time, money, and talents to help those in need (whenever and wherever the need presents itself).

Brookland Boy Scouts ‐Call For Volunteers

Adult volunteers are greatly needed. If you

cannot commit to ongoing participation, you are encouraged to consider holding a workshop in which you can teach a skill that can help the boys earn a merit badge.

“We welcome anybody who has a passion and

commitment to developing young boys,” says Scoutmaster Davis. “That’s what we look for – passion! If the passion is not there, there is no commitment. “

“It’s not necessarily the person that is seen as a

leader in the community that usually volunteers. It is sometimes the person you least expect. It’s the professional in the congregation that sits out in the pew every Sunday, who needs to share and give back. We were all in these boys’ shoes at one point. It’s time to give back.”

Enlightening To The Believer; Frightening To The Unbeliever

Every member of Brookland and believer in the Lord Jesus Christ

is invited to Bible Study each Wednesday at 12 Noon and 6:00

PM beginning September 16, 2009. We will rejoice in the Victory

the Lord Jesus Christ has assured us in the revelation given to

John while exiled on the Isle of Patmos. Pastor Jackson will lead

this study on Revelation to enlighten, encourage and empower

believers.

The events unfolding in today's world are destroying the moral fabric of our society,

undermining the basic, Biblical family structure, threatening economic prosperity and

survival, and causing havoc and panic among many. If so much is happening today,

what will the future be like for our children and our grandchildren?

There is one reliable source of information about the future‐‐‐one that has an

outstanding record of accuracy...The BIBLE! We can trust the Bible to help us

understand the meaning of the events of our day and what those events tell us about

our hope for the future as we look toward the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. This

study is not intended to make anyone fearful, but to make all of us aware so we can

prepare for the coming of God's Kingdom. We want Christians who trust in the Lord to

know how to read the signs and understand coming events.

Revelation 1:3 says, "Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this

prophecy."

Come, let us read and study the Book of Revelation and be blessed.

Military Appreciation Cards Project

Children’s Worship would like to send an inspirational card to your family members who are serving in war zones. Submit information to Kenneth Campbell at [email protected] or contact him at 419‐7468.

Inspirational cards are already being sent to members of the 751st Combat Sustainment Support Battalion serving Iraq. The unit, based at McEntire Joint National Guard Station in Columbia, began its 400 day tour of duty in February. We selected the unit because one of its members, 1st Sergeant Gary Coates, is a member of Brookland. His wife, Pam, is a volunteer in Children’s Worship and their two children, Alaina and Gary Jr., grew up in Children’s Worship.

Before the unit left for training in Texas, Sgt. Coates visited Children’s Worship and explained the duties and responsibilities the support battalion will have in Iraq. He also told the children how much the soldiers would appreciate receiving mail from back home.

Our goal is to provide each member of the troop with a personalized card. The front cover and inspirational message on the right inside flap are the same on all cards, but the children can personalize each card by writing a message on the blank left inside flap or elsewhere on the card. They may also decorate the cards with colorful inspirational stickers and their own coloring or drawing.

The first cards were sent in February while the group was training in Texas. In the first card, we shared our 2008 Scripture (3 John 1:2, NIV):

getting along well.

“The cards brought a lot of smiles and cheer to the soldiers,” Sgt. Coates told the children in an email from Iraq. “They really loved the ones that were personalized. We cannot thank you all enough for your support during these times. Please continue to pray for us and our families.”

The second card was mailed in July. It shares two Scriptures:

Children’s Worship is for children 5 to 11 years of age. At Brookland Northeast, Children’s Worship meets every Sunday during 10 a.m. worship services, except third Sundays. At Brookland West, Children’s Worship meets on the second and fourth Sundays during the 8 a.m. worship service, and on the first, second, fourth and fifth Sundays during the 11 a.m. worship services.

Young Women of Excellence

Mariah Almenia Campbell is the daughter of Walter and Bridget Campbell. She is a 5th grader at Hopkins Elementary School. She enjoys reading and wants to be a famous author when she grows up. Mariah also enjoys shopping, talking on the phone to her friends and jumping on the trampoline with her sister, brother and friends. She likes animals and has a dog name Jack. Her favorite colors are pink and purple, and her favorite food is pizza. Mariah enjoys watching her favorite TV shows which are Hannah Montana and Suite Life on Deck. She attends Children's Church, Sunday School and she sings on the youth choir on Youth and Teens Day. She feels the Young Women of Excellence will give her a head start on how to be a young woman.

Jaylen McKenzie Davis is the daughter of Jay and Helen Davis. She is in 5th grade at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School. She loves her teacher, Mr. “V”, because he keeps his pet snake in the classroom, and he plays his acoustic and electric guitar during class. He also does yo‐yo tricks for the class. She enjoys reading, playing sports and watching television. Jaylen recently read the Harry Potter series which has 4,100 pages! Her favorite sports are soccer, football and track of which she has played soccer and track. She hopes to play football in the near future! Jaylen hopes to learn new things, interact with new people, practice manners, visit new places, use her spare time wisely and laugh more often.

Jalia Morné Dozier is the daughter of James and Mornique Dozier. She is a 5th grader at North Springs Elementary School where she is involved in chorus, cheerleading, and dance (ballet and jazz). Jalia has many interests which include singing, dancing, stepping and styling. In the future, she plans to play the violin and piano. Jalia has participated in the girl scouts at Brookland as well as Bibleway of Atlas Road. She is a member of the children’s choir and the Youth and Teens Day choir. She attends children’s church regularly. One of her goals is to be an inspiration to others while giving back in any way that she can. She looks forward to meeting other young ladies and new friends, and she hopes the Young Women of Excellence will bring her closer to God.


Food Pantry Food Drive

The Yes We Will Volunteers (YWWV), an independent volunteer organization is hosting a food drive for Brookland’s Food Pantry. YWWV engages in community service activities each month with different charities. In the past, this group of dedicated volunteers has partnered with Harvest Hope, Carolina Boys Home, St. Peter’s Catholic Church Homeless Ministry and The Ronald McDonald House. For the month of September, they have set a goal of raising 5,000 units of non‐perishable food items on behalf of the Food Bank. The mission of Brookland’s Food Pantry is to assist people in need that live in an established environment in Richland or Lexington counties. To receive service, people need documents that verify their identity and their place of residence. This Brookland ministry is one of 400 Harvest Hope affiliated food pantries in 20 counties in the state of South Carolina and one of the few African‐American churches to fit into this category. On average, the Food Bank serves 40 families each month. The food drive will run through Friday, September 25th. Mentoring Changes Lives Did you know?

1 in 10 American children has a parent under criminal

justice supervision – incarcerated, on probation, or on

parole.

1 in 33 American children – and 1 in 8 African American

children – has a parent incarcerated

Brookland Baptist Church, in partnership with Clemson University’s Institute on Family and Neighborhood Life and Angel Tree Ministries, launched a mentoring program for children of prisoners in January 2009. The first mentee‐mentor matches were made in March 2009. The mentoring program provides life changing opportunities for both the mentors and the mentees.

Would you like to change your life?

To become a MENTOR, adults need to: — Complete an application;

— Be at least 21 years of age;

— Successfully complete background and reference checks;

— Participate in required training sessions;

— Agree to a one‐year mentoring relationship;

— Commit to spending a minimum of 4 hours monthly in person with mentee.

To participate as a MENTEE, children /youth need to — Complete an application;

— Be between the ages of 4 and 17;

— Have A parent or guardian support for participation;

— Have a parent in state or federal prison, or in jail with a prior history of incarceration

in state or federal prison;

— Agree to a one‐year mentoring relationship;

— Be willing to communicate regularly with mentor.

Brookland’s Boy Scouts Expect a Great Year

Brookland’s Boy Scout Troop 74 is looking to have perhaps their biggest year ever. “The boys never cease to amaze us in how they step up to the plate and perform, and in the leadership they show at every level in the program,” says Scoutmaster Randy Davis. “Sometimes, they start gradually in the program but after having a year under their belts they begin exemplifying the model of scouting. Our troop is one of the most well‐respected troops in the council based on comments we receive when we go to summer camps and on outings. People are really impressed in what they see in our boys. I would say we are number one.” After seeing two of its scouts – Andrew Greene and Miguel Charlemane ‐‐ reach the rank of Eagle during the 2007‐2008 year of activities, as many as four Scouts could become Eagles this year. Eagle is the highest rank a Boy Scout can reach. To become an Eagle, a Scout must achieve at least 21 merit badges and demonstrate Scout Spirit, service and leadership. Four of Brookland’s Scouts have had their Eagle projects approved by the Indian Waters Council and two of them have already finished their respective activities. *Chandler Robinson organized a clothes drive and distributed clothes free. *Leland Green created a flower garden at a Columbia church. *Michael Williams will improve Greenview Park, including refurbishing benches. *Julius Davis will organize a clothing warehouse at God’s Storehouse in Columbia. A Scout may use members of the troop to help with the project. Once he completes his project, the Scout must submit a written account of what was done and appear before the Indian Waters Council Board of Review as a final step. Brookland has produced 11 Eagle Scouts, the most African American Eagles of any troop in the area. In

other achievements, during the year the boys completed public speaking, communications, citizenship in the community, and law merit badges. Also, 13 boys attended the weeklong annual summer camp at Camp Barstow in June in Batesburg. The boys participated in the following activities to achieve merit badges: archery, cooking, environmental science, wilderness survival, personal fitness, mammal study, wood carving, camping, weather, rifle shoot, orienteering, rowing, reptile/amphibian study, canoeing, motor boating, bird study, Indian lore, lifesaving, leather work, and nature study. Three Brookland Scouts ‐‐ Andrew Greene, William Bowman III, and Jesse Williams ‐‐ were inducted into the prestigious Order of the Arrow society during the stay at Camp Barstow. The Order of the Arrow is a national honor society of the Boy Scouts of America. Those receiving the recognition are selected and voted on by the members of their troop in recognition of their leadership and commitment to Scouting goals. They are not aware of their selection until they are tapped during the ceremony at the camp. Two Scouts, Chandler Robinson and Leland Green, were inducted into the Order of the Arrow the previous summer. Also as a part of the Order of the Arrow recognition, the boys must participate in a weekend survival camp held by Indian Waters Council to demonstrate their leadership and survival skills under primitive conditions. “It is a troop honor to be selected by your peers,” says Scoutmaster Davis. Brookland currently has 22 active Boy Scouts, including five who crossed over from Cub Scouts in May.


WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY AND THE YOUNG WOMEN OF EXCELLENCE CELEBRATES THE YEAR OF SACRIFICE AND SERVICE

This summer has been a summer of sacrifice and service for the Women's Bible Study and Young Women of Excellence. First the women made the sacrifice to attend Bible Study this summer and studied how to get rid of the things that weigh us down that may cause us not to be able to see the Blessings and plans God has for us. Our main scripture was Hebrews 12:1‐2. We focused on 4 major areas that maybe blocking our blessings:

1.Excess items we don't use that can bless someone else 2.Health issues 3.Bad Habits (sin) 4. Unhealthy Relationships

The women were placed in small groups and found scriptures that related to each category and shared them with the class.

Reverend Betty Brown informed the class about a group of ladies in a rehabilitation center in West Columbia that were in need of women clothing, accessories, bedding and more. The class decided to make the sacrifice to bless the sisters with their excess by turning the old Brookland site into a department store where the women could come in and shop for clothes, shoes, accessories and other personal items.

On Tuesday August 4th about 25th, the women from the center came to the church and we worshiped with them, heard their testimonies about how they have been delivered, ate and fellowshipped with them and then we let them shop until they dropped!!!. One of the ladies said "I came to the center with the clothes I had on and now she was walking out with bags of clothes, what a blessing that was!

The Young Women of Excellence helped to coordinate and organize the clothes and served as hostesses by welcoming them, helping them to shop and helping to present each one with a basket prepared by Rev. Betty Brown. Also Deaconess Jacquie Stewart presented a card for each lady created by the children in Children's Church.

A special thank you to Rev. Betty Brown and all of women in Women's Bible Study who participated and the Young Women of Excellence by showing that we are blessed to be a blessing in this year of Sacrifice and Service

Women's Bible Study will begin again September 13th, the second Sunday in September. Hope to see you there.

Annual Silent Live Auction on October 23rd, 2009. The theme this year is Caribbean Carnival: “Celebrating Our Children through the Beat of the Drums”. The event will be held at the Brookland and Banquet Conference Center from 6:30pm – 10:30pm. Ticket prices are $30 per person or $50 per couple.
