AGM & Awards Banquet It’s is hard to believe that we are getting ready to start another year and another decade!
The banquet, held at Coachmen’s Lodge in Bellingham, MA, recognized our 2019 ef-
forts. We had a brief overview of last year’s accomplishments, election of officers for
2020, lunch, sponsor appreciation awards, year-end participation awards, volunteer
awards and our awesome raffle of donated items.
And of course there was plenty of reconnecting with everyone and how we were doing
(including our horses)!
Elected for 2020 are: President Becky Kalagher, Vice-President/Clerk Carolyn Weeks,
Recording Secretary Rose Zariczny, and Treasurer Karen Parlin.
Board of Directors: Crysanda Boisvert, Sharron Cochran, Donna Johnson, Joan Low-
bridge-Sisley, Suzanne Nicholas, Lynn Paresky, Annamaria Paul, Sue Quirk, Joyce
Sandvik, and Kelly Shaw.
The following earned enough points and met the required minimum of four hours of
volunteer time to qualify for year-end awards. Congratulations and job well done to all!

backbone of our organization!
To finish off the day we proceeded with our raffle table.
There were many happy people that went home with
some very nice items. I know I was quite happy with the

Thank you to everyone who came early to help set up

UPCOMING SPRING RIDES
By Lynn Paresky
With this mild weather we’ve been having so far, it really
feels like Spring riding is just around the corner!
Are you getting excited about the start of the riding season?
BSTRA has some Spring rides that I’m sure you will want to
attend. Make sure to hold these dates on your calendar.
Our annual Nancy Maenzo Memorial Benefit Ride is
scheduled for March 29th, with an ice date of April 19th.
Since it’s the first ride kicking off our riding calendar, it’s a
short ride — just slightly over 5 miles. Hosts Kelly and Jim
Shaw provide a delicious hot lunch after the ride. Ride
sponsor David Maenzo provides a $50 Door Prize, and
there is a great raffle table this year offering everyone chanc-
es to go home with some pretty amazing prizes. This has
become a very popular ride out of the Wallis St entrance to
the Douglas State Forest. Because there is such limited
parking there, I suggest you register early so you won’t be
closed out after all the parking spots have been reserved.
The ride is already about 1/2 full, so register now!
May 9th is our Patriotism Benefit Ride out of the Wallum
Lake parking area. This is a fun Red-White-Blue themed
ride, with riders and horses decked out in their patriotic col-
ors. A prize is given to the horse and rider who is “best
dressed” in red, white & blue. Hot lunch and raffle table
follow the ride. This ride is co-sponsored by Corinthian
Insurance Agency and Paresky Flitt & Company LLP.
May 17th is BSTRA’s Spring Hunter Pace held at Hodges
Village Dam’s Greenbriar Recreational Area in Oxford. Al-
ways a fun time no matter what speed you ride! Jumps are
optional, and there are 3 Divisions to choose from, as well as
a Junior Division. Lunch is provided to all pre-registered
riders and awards are handed out to winners of each of the 4
divisions. This Pace is sponsored by Yucc’ It Up! Equine
Supplements.
May 24th will be BSTRA’s first Spring Benefit Ride out of
a new location in Douglas. This ride is hosted by Diane Lane
and sponsored by Fairytale Farm. The ride will go out of
Diane’s property at 334 SW Main St, Douglas, and riders will
go on the SNETT and connecting trails in the Douglas State
Forest for a total of 7 miles (or 14 miles if repeated). This
ride will have limited parking and requires pre-registration.
We recommend early registration so you don’t miss out.
All participants will receive a commemorative item when
they check in.
A BBQ lunch will follow the ride and there will be a raffle
table offering wonderful prizes.
June 7th is our National Trails Day Fundraising Ride out
of Great Brook Farm in Carlisle, MA. Save the date and be
part of this wonderful day that recognizes the importance of
trails! This ride is sponsored by Yered Trailers and offers a
tremendous hot lunch following the ride, a huge raffle, and
generous prizes awarded to participants who have collected
the most money with their Sponsor Papers. For more infor-
mation about our National Trails Day event, go to the Na-
tional Trails Day tab at www.bstra.org. We suggest you start
collecting your sponsors early so you will be in the running
for the generous prizes handed out to the Top 8 and 2 Run-
ners Up!
Note: All of these rides are NEHT affiliated except for
the Spring Hunter Pace.

profit organization dedicated to
the creation, maintenance and
preservation of trails in MA State
Forests and Parks for a variety of
user groups for outdoor recreation
and fitness.
The recent recipient of the De-
partment of Conservation and
Recreation’s Shared Stewardship
Award, BSTRA has been recog-
nized for its ongoing commitment
to our community trails. To date,
BSTRA has put more than
$630,000 into trails. Proceeds
from this raffle will help fund this
year’s $55,000 project in the
Douglas State Forest. BSTRA
relies on grants and fundraisers
like this raffle to fund its projects.
Please participate in this raffle and
join us in supporting trails.
This raffle prize was donated in
memory of Nancy Maenzo, the
late wife of BSTRA Supporter,
David Maenzo, as well as to rec-
ognize Yucc’ It Up! Equine Sup-
plements.
It was Nancy’s wish to support
BSTRA, Inc. — because BSTRA
does so much for the cause of
trail advocacy. Nancy loved her
time on the trails, and she appre-
ciated all that BSTRA has done to
maintain community trails for
hikers, bikers, equestrians, dog
walkers, cross country skiers, and
families enjoying nature.
The raffle drawing will take

NEW TRAIL CROSSING SIGNS IN UPTON
During a meeting of the Friends of the Upton State For-
est, Suzanne Nicholas inquired about getting some signs
placed to let drivers know that there could be trail users
crossing the road. She was told they had tried years ago to
get them installed with no luck.
Bill Taylor suggested that she actually fill out an applica-
tion along with support letters and submit it to the Upton
Board of Selectmen. Suzanne went ahead and filled out the
application to install three trail crossing signs.
I wrote the following letter of support from BSTRA and
Suzanne asked for letters from NEMBA and the Land
Stewardship Committee of Upton.
Dear Mr. Westgate,
The Board of Directors of Bay State Trail Riders Association
supports the request of the Friends of Upton State Forest for the
installation of trail crossing signs on Westboro and Southboro roads
to warn drivers of equestrians and other trail users crossing the roads
when using Upton State Forest’s Rabbit Run trail. The Rabbit
Run trail was built by BSTRA and is used regularly by horse riders
(as well as hikers and mountain bikers.)
Upton State Forest has seen a steady increase of users and we are
fortunate enough at this point that there have been no accidents at the
road crossings. A pro-active approach to safety is what is needed right
now. Another thought to add to the trail crossing signage would be to
demarcate a crossing on the roadway where the trail crosses. Maybe
using dashed parallel lines to designate the crossing area along with
the signs would be
the best course to
alert vehicle traffic
that trail users do
cross in these areas.
We believe the
signage and “cross
walk” is necessary
to help prevent inju-
ry to both drivers
and trail users.
Sincerely yours,
Becky Kalagher
The good news
is that the Select-
men approved
the request. Two
signs will be placed before and after the state park en-
trance on Westboro Road, and one will be placed on
Southboro Road.
Thank you very much Suzanne for making the road
crossings safer for all trail users of the Upton State Forest.
