Presidents Report

Hello Members,

Firstly, here is hoping you and your family enjoy the festive season and don’t over indulge. Looking

forward to catching up in 2018 at the various events the club has organised.

Its been a big year the BTCV, and I thank the committee for their hard work over the past 12 months at

all the various events, from Specialty Show weekends, to Bully Walks, and the various Expos the Bull

Terriers have been promoted at, thank you and keep it going into 2018.

As members are aware the club ran a point score competition to encourage members to show their dogs

not only at Specialty level, but at All Breeds level. The results are printed in the newsletter.

Congratulations to Adam Combes and his dog, Ch Wakatang River Boy, “Thor” for taking out Best

Dog. And to Donna Hansen and her bitch Braxstar Harlem Back Girl, “Scarlett”, for taking out the best

Bitch. Thank you to the members who participated in this venture.

Yours in sport,

Lance Stephenson

Secretary Report

Hi Members, Thanks to all who supported our club with sponsorship of sashes and trophies for our November shows, and the raffle was a huge success! Thanks to all who bought tickets. Our recent shows went smoothly and our judges had a great time. Thanks to all who helped look after them after their appointments. Please note that our Annual General Meeting has been rescheduled to the 7th January 2018. A reminder in the hotter weather to be careful to keep our dogs out of the sun, I still hear

lots of people tell me they once had a bull terrier back in the 80’s/90’s but that it died of skin cancer. I think the incidence of these types of diseases should be reduced in today’s era with a much higher awareness of the damage the UV rays cause. Also, there are some fantastic sunblock products on the market for dogs now. Have a great Christmas and new year break, and see you in 2018. Cheers Deb.

Many thanks to the Committee for inviting me to judge their show, the hospitality was second to none.

I had some lovely dogs to go over, mouths as usual could be better but I was pleased to see that length of

head was the norm and no exaggerated or over done heads, also it was pleasing that there were none of

the slopping top lines that are creeping into the UK.

Congratulations to Adam Coombes on winning the Best Dog in the point score for 2017

with Ch Wakatang River Boy. Unfortunately, this point score was for members of the

Bull Terrier Club of Victoria only.

And as there was a draw for best dog, it went on a countback for the dog with most

Challenges, and Ch Wakatang River Boy was declared the winner of the Best Dog point

score.

Congratulations also go to Donna Hansen on winning the Best Bitch in the point score

with Braxstar Harlem Back Girl ROM

Thanks to all the entries through the year and for members supporting ROM judges at All

Breed shows.

Dear Secretary

It is with regret that I inform Clubs that Mr Michael

Plane "Xipheres Bull Terriers" recently passed away.

Mike first showed Bull Terriers in 1967. Over the

years he imported a number of dogs and bitches and

made regular trips overseas to both the UK and USA

either judging or visiting Bull Terrier Kennels. Mike

was one of the group who initiated the Australian

Bull Terrier Trophy Show in 1979 and was also

instrumental in the ROM Award system. He was also

the first Chairman of the National Bull Terrier

Council (Australia). Whilst he hasn't judged or owned

a Bull Terrier for some time, his passion for the breed

never waned. I am sure that the older members of the

Bull Terrier fraternity in Australia will remember

Mike with great fondness, his forthright manner and

his passion for the breed.

Neil McCracken nomination for life membership

Neil McCracken is a familiar face in the Bull Terrier world, and many have memories of Kaye and Neil

over the years.

A brief history:

Having purchased his first Bull Terrier in the early 1980’s, Neil with help from fellow members, decided

to start showing their Bully, Girvine Glacier Lass, becoming his first Australian Champion. Prior to this,

Neil had bred and shown Labradors since 1958.

Becoming involved in the Bull Terrier Club of Victoria, firstly on committee, and then Neil took on the

role of President in 1988. Neil worked tirelessly over the years for the club, coming up with some great

initiatives for members to be involved with. Promoting the breed in the media and also around the show

ring. Passion for the breed is something Neil has plenty of, and has and will defend the breed to no end.

Donating time, trophies and of course hospitality over the years, Both Neil and Kayes’ efforts are very

much appreciated. They have hosted a number of judges, local and overseas, over the time, not only

opening their homes up, but also showing them the sights that Victoria has to offer.

The club is looking forward to welcoming Neil McCracken as a life member, and we thank you once

again for all your thankless work over the years.

Natural Solutions for Worms in dogs and cats

Greenpet has a range of natural non-toxic worming solutions for dogs, cats, horses, people and other

animals.

Intestinal worms are relatively common in all animals and it is necessary to control them as a heavy

worm burden can cause a variety of health issues. Worming medications that can kill off parasites with

one application are strong and do have side effects.

Administering some of these drugs/chemicals on a regular basis such as monthly puts your pet at further

risk long term, especially when you may be using some drugs that aren’t even necessary.

Most heartworm preventatives are chemical insecticides which also have the potential to damage your

dog’s health.

There are safer alternatives and one of the most important preventative measures is a healthy immune

system, and the best way to ensure a healthy immune system is to feed a balanced fresh raw food diet.

Healthy dogs and cats have natural defences against parasites and recent studies have shown that having

a small number of parasites actually reduced the risk of developing allergies and that animals kept free

of all parasites had an increase in allergies.

The most common worms affecting dogs and cats are: roundworms, hookworm, whipworms, tapeworm

and heartworm. In most cases it is difficult to know if your animals have worms because they will not

always show any obvious symptoms unless they have a large infestation.

Some of the symptoms may include diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, poor coat condition, distended

abdomen, lethargy, anal scooting or changes in appetite (poor appetite or ravenous).

Roundworms

Roundworms are large spaghetti-like in appearance and absorb nutrients from the infected animal. They

live and reproduce in the small intestine.

Whipworms

Whipworms are threadlike and are also more common in dogs than cats. Animals may become infected

by ingesting whipworm eggs from soil or other substances containing eggs.

Tapeworms

Tapeworms are long and flat in appearance and break off into segments. They can grow quite long in

length and live in the small intestine. Dogs and cats may acquire tapeworms by ingesting an intermediate

host, like an infected flea or rodent.

Page 12: The Bull Terrier...Bull Terrier Club of Victoria Point Score 2017 Mrs Pamela Brown Warragul and District Kennel Club March 13th (5 Bull Terriers entered) Challenge Dog: Ch Wakatang

Hookworms

Hookworms are short blood sucking parasites that attach to the intestinal wall and suck blood and

nutrients from their host. Hookworms are more common in dogs than in cats and can cause anemia if left

untreated.

Heartworms

Heartworm is a type of roundworm spread by mosquitoes when they bite a dog and inject immature

worms, called microfilaria, into the body. The microfilaria then circulates through the body tissue

taking approximately six months to reach the right side of the dog’s heart where they develop into adult

heartworm.

Symptoms of heartworm disease may include:

Coughing, intolerance to exercise, shortness of breath, weight loss, poor appetite and listlessness.

Only certain mosquitoes can transmit heartworm, so by reducing your dog or cat’s exposure to

mosquitoes will reduce the risk significantly. It is important however to use preventative measures if you

live in a high-risk heartworm area. Heartworms live in the animal’s bloodstream, not the gastrointestinal

tract so keeping their immune system strong is also important in reducing the risk of heartworm.

Some foods that help to fight worms include:

Raw grated carrot, watercress, pumpkin & pumpkin seeds, coconut, papaya, greens, fennel and apple

cider vinegar.

Good quality Canine/Feline Probiotics and digestive enzyme supplements also provide additional

support by ensuring the gastrointestinal tract has a good balance of healthy intestinal flora to help flush

out intestinal worms.

Homeopathy and herbs are safe natural alternatives that may be used to help control worms in dogs and

cats as well as horses, poultry, birds and people!

If you do need to use a conventional wormer or heartworm medication, then it is a good idea to follow

up with liver detox remedies to reduce the risk of side effects.

Christmas Bully Walk Jells Park December 17th

After having to postpone the walk due to weather, the clubs

Christmas walk took place on a very hot & at a very busy Jells

Park. Once again it was very well received, around 35 Bullies

turned up on what was going to be a hot day, this was a

fabulous effort. The committee was a bit lite on for the walk

and many thanks must go to the club members who stood up

and helped out. Standing in the sun cooking a BBQ, isn’t

anyone’s idea of fun, so thanks.

These walks give a fantastic outlet for members whos Bullies

on limited register or who aren’t interested in showing, as they

know they have the prettiest Bully on Earth. The club is looking

forward to new destinations for our walks next year & thank the

members who come out, rain, hail or shine.

Note to Members and Breeders:

The Bull Terrier Club have DNA swab kits available for all breeders or owners of

Pedigree bull terriers wishing to submit DNA samples from their animals to Animal

Health Trust. The sample kits include a contact details form and five DNA swabs. A

copy of pedigree and any health information is required with DNA submission. Kits may

be taken home for completion and posting back to the UK. It is relatively cheap to post

the kits and as the samples are stable once taken, they can be sent by general mail. We

can also post them out to any breeders interested in providing this valuable DNA to

researchers who have the best interests of our breed at heart.

Read by Neil McCracken as chair person cannot speak on motion. “That the Bull Terrier Club of Victoria Inc. abstain (or be exempted) from voting on any Notice of Motion via the NBTC(A) pertaining to bull terrier miniatures, and that this motion be inserted into our constitution” Rationale:

1. The Bull Terrier Club of Victoria Inc. is a breed club that caters for bull terriers only. Its members should not be making decisions on a breed that we do not cater for.

2. In Victoria there is a separate club that caters for Bull Terrier Miniatures and the Bull Terrier Club of Victoria Inc. should not be used as an avenue to obtain a second Victorian vote on NBTC(A) NOMs that relate to the bull terrier miniature.

Vote: 16 in favour, 2 abstain MOTION CARRIED Clarification that BTCV will respond to NBTCA Noms regarding bull terrier miniatures as “abstained” within three month time frame.

5 National Council Business –

1. Nominations for Secretary and President of NBTC(A) Current Nominations for positions read out to attendees Calls for nominations from floor. No nominations. Respond to NBTCA that there are no nominations from BTCV

2. Motions x 2 from Northern Districts BTC to hold 2019 Trophy Show & that in NSW the trophy show be held alternately between the two NSW clubs. Letter from NDBTC and NSWBTC read out regarding the matter. Discussion that NDBTC should forward NOM “to allow their club to be placed in trophy show rotation” and that it would be unfair to deny BTCNSW so close to event. Vote held on motion “That the Northern Districts Bull Terrier Club of NSW be permitted to host and run the 2019 Trophy Show which is currently allocated to the NSW Bull Terrier Club” In favour – 0 Against – 17 Abstain – 1 Motion defeated, subsequent motion defeated.
