New State Requirements for Immunizations

The state has issued new immunization requirements for school entry for Kindergarten, 1st grade, 7th grade and 11th grade. This will go into effect for the 2019-2020 school year. What this means for you.

Beside all of the current requirements, Kindergarten and 1st grade will be required to have 2 Hepatitis A shots. These shots are already required for entry into Pre-K, so most of next year’s Kindergarteners and first graders should already have these.

For 7th grade, it is already required they have a Tdap going into 7th grade, now they will also be required to have an MCV4 or Menactra, which is an immunization for Meningococcal Disease.

For 11th grade, they will be required to have 2 MCV4 shots. So for the school year coming up, if your Junior has only 1 MCV4 they will be required to get a second one, if they don’t have any, they will be required to get one.

Most doctors have been routinely giving these shots for the past several years, so everyone should be good. If, on review of your student’s immunizations, we find that they will need one before school starts in the fall, we will send you a letter to notify you. We are required to notify you by the 15th of May if records indicate they need additional immunizations. We will also send you a second letter around the first of August as a

Habit 6 is “Synergize”. This habit focuses on engaging with others’ collectively. Individuals’ attitude for group cooperation is:

Individuals’ attitude for group cooperation is:1. Valuing others’ strengths and learning from them.2. Seeking out ideas in groups, as it helps create better solutions, fosters communication, builds trust compared to working alone.3. Believing that we can all learn from each other.

The last Habit, Habit 7, focuses on maintenance and balance of heart, brain, soul and body. If one area is being overused and ignored, the rest of the areas will see the effect. Students are able to:

1. Demonstrate healthy ways to express needs, wants and feelings. 2. Develop intrapersonal skills, self-reliance, self-confidence, and self-discipline.3. Demonstrate characteristics of a responsible friend and family member.

HIGH SCHOOL NEWSKAY Club Celebrates “Be the Spark” Grant

Last spring, the KAY Club was awarded a grant of over $4500 from Blue Cross/ Blue Shield of Kansas to renovate and update the existing tennis courts. After a year of planning and work, KAY officers were excited to welcome Cheryl Gleason, KSHSAA and Kaitlyn Bryan, BCBS to Douglass. The improvements include, but are not limited to, new benches and nets. Lines are freshly painted and cracks are sealed. A wide range of equipment has been purchased for the tennis teams and a teaching cart, which includes a classroom set of rackets, is now available for the elementary students. The club members wanted to help improve the courts for not only the high school teams but also for the community as a whole. With these small steps, we hope people of all ages will be able to enjoy the courts.

SADD Provides a Fun-filled After Prom

After Prom was held on Saturday, April 13th from 11pm to 2am at the Derby Recreation Center. All DHS students, in good standing, were invited to join the fun at no cost! Activities included swimming, basketball, volleyball, and card games. Food and drinks were also provided.

Drawings for gift card prizes were held every half hour and students had to be present to win. The $20 gift cards ranged from Taco Bell to iTunes. Senior names were placed in a separate drawing for $50 gift cards from Walmart and all seniors remaining at the end of the night had a chance to win an additional $50 prepaid card. In total, 30 gift cards were handed out to freshmen through juniors and 40 cards went to senior guests. A fun time was had by all! And, as always, none of this would be possible without the support of our local businesses, churches, and clubs. Thank you for your support!

Web Page Design Field Trip

On April 15, Mrs. Dressler’s Web Page Design class, along with three seniors who are interested in graphic design and marketing fields, went to visit Lee Media Group’s office in downtown Wichita. Lee Media Group is a website design, development and marketing company that was founded in Rose Hill. While the students were there, they were divided into three groups; each group worked together with business owners from Butler County Heating and Air Conditioning, Dave’s Home Grown Trees and The Health Connection, Inc., to create the business’s profile on the new Rose Hill Chamber of Commerce website. One member from each group presented what the group had accomplished and then we finished our visit with some general information on social media and its use in marketing. It was a great morning of real-world experience for the students.

Future Maker Lab and Reality U Come to Douglass HS and Sisk MS

On April 5th, DHS students were able to participate in the Future Maker Lab and Reality U. The goal of the mobile lab is to educate students by bringing in-demand careers to the doorsteps through the use of technology. In the lab students experienced actual and virtual tools that are used in STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Math) careers. Students were able to test out the equipment using virtual reality, information technology and hands-on experiences.

Reality U is a very eye opening experience for students that allows them to select a career then receive a monthly budget based on their life style survey answers and G.P.A. Students must purchase a car, house, utilities, phone service, insurance, groceries and child care.

We would like to thank RCB Bank for their generous donation in helping provide the experience of Reality U for our students.

The Future Maker Lab is sponsored by KOCH, Westar Energy, Cessna/Textron and Spirit Aerosystems.

We would like to thank the following volunteers that worked at the Reality U Booths:

Brochures will be sent to the Elementary, Middle, and High School offices the first week in May. Weightlifting/Speed Camp is open to

anyone going into 5th grade next year through 12th grade.

Why should your athlete participate in summer conditioning? Younger athletes get valuable instruction time of the various techniques used in the weight room in a small group setting. There is a direct correlation between involvement in summer conditioning and success in your respective sport. High school athletes will continue to build on their hard work from the school year. If an athlete takes all summer off from training next school year will be like starting over. Strength, speed, and conditioning translate to every sport. Improving in these areas will ensure your athlete a chance at success. Don’t lose your starting spot to someone who out-worked

you this summer! If you have any questions please feel free to call or email.
