PRESIDENT FELICE BRENNER My Final President’s Letter…To The Non-Members
It seems that the May/June bulletin is the place for an outgoing temple president to reflect, recap, and ruminate two years of accomplishments. It would be the place for thank yous and lessons learned.
And I do want to get to that when I have more time and space. We owe masses of appreciation to the congregants who have done wonderful things for our community over the last two years.
But instead, I’m going to use this platform to speak to the “nons.” These are Jewish people in our community—Jewish people who feel the connection, but don’t join Temple Emanuel Winston-Salem.
They are known as the “Non-Members.”
Who are they? We know that many are doctors, but they’re in all kinds professions. The live all over Winston-Salem and, in my experience, they’re very nice people. They seem pleasantly surprised when they find out that I’m willing to be more than a “cultural Jew” and volunteer for our local temple.
In general, I’ve found that they feel a close traditional connection to the Jewish people and are certainly interested in the preservation of our traditions. But the “nons” often say that they don’t attend services regularly so they don’t see the value of membership. Sometimes they apologize—and I wonder why they feel the need to express regret when it’s so easy to join.
I feel that all our members represent the Jewish community and should emphasize the importance of the existence, stability, and beautiful diversity of our temple. So, I’m going to take this opportunity and to repeat what I’ve said numerous times.
Jews of Winston-Salem: If you feel a connection to Judaism, Temple Emanuel is the place to be. We welcome members from all Jewish backgrounds. We like you and are like you. We want to connect with you. We’re your Jewish home!
We’re trying to send the message that the value of Temple membership goes beyond a seat in our pews—it’s the connections we make with each other and our Jewish values.
I hope our congregants will help us communicate this to all Jews in our community as our leadership focuses on ideas that makes Temple Emanuel a better place to study, worship, and gather. A few of our recent “member engagement” initiatives include:
● A constitutional amendment transferring membership leadership from a committee chair position to a vice president and executive committee position
● A reboot of our website and social media presence to better communicate with and appeal to younger members ● Free membership to Jewish Temple Emanuel preschool families and lower membership fees for single members ● A Chavurah social group initiative featuring groups with like interests and leisure activities
● Greater emphasis on family-friendly programming and adult education/“lifelong” learning
As my two years as president winds down, I can reflect on what we’ve accomplished. And I’m feeling pretty good about it as national synagogue membership numbers decline while ours have remained fairly stable. We’re a strong, vibrant, and engaging congregation.
So non-members—this final president’s letter is a message for you. Please join us. We’d love to call you Temple Emanuel Winston-Salem member.

RABBI MARK D. COHN Yishar Koach - May you go on in strength, Courtney
In the coming weeks, as our academic year comes to a close with the end of Religious School and the winding down of this year’s lifelong learning offerings, we will give our good-byes and well-wishes to our Director of Education, Courtney Anthony. Courtney has worked diligently in so many ways for our congregation and I am so grateful for having had the last four years to partner with her in a whole myriad of tasks.
We have travelled to teach and to learn, to explore and to have fun. From Atlanta to Jerusalem, New York City to Washington, DC, Courtney has arranged memorable trips and numerous opportunities for our students and families to discover what is possible when we leave shul and go to “do” Jewish on the road. And we have shared countless hours teaching in our sanctuary and in our library – working to create a meaningful experience for our children as they develop their sense of Judaism and Yiddishkeit.
Anyone who knows me knows I love to laugh and to learn. And Courtney and I have laughed a lot – at funny situations like whimsical shopping when we take our temple kids to PetCo because … where else can you kill 30 minutes when your reservation isn’t ready at Carmine’s on the Upper West Side or wandering through the Atlanta Aquarium and being so crowded that we literally couldn’t see the exhibits through the people. And I have learned a lot – from Shakespeare to American Jewish writers, Courtney has been my teacher as we have sat in the library with our teens exploring literature about or by Jews. I have learned how to be more attentive to the needs of our children and I have learned how to nurture a discussion and follow the thread of where the kids are going.
Of all the congregations in this fine land of ours … there is none like the Isaac Mayer Wise Temple of Cincinnati, as that is the congregation named for the rabbi who was, in many ways, the founder of organized Reform Judaism in North America. Courtney places remarkable value on and appreciation of Judaism and Jewish history, Jewish peoplehood and Israel and I am quite sure she will find a welcome space upon arrival in the synagogue where I was ordained. I offer, as I’m sure you will join me, a prayer of great blessing as she moves on from our community to a place she has called home before and a congregation to which I know she will bring many gifts. Blessed were you in your coming into our community, Courtney, and may you find great blessing on your path and the many paths on which you will travel from here!
B’Shalom, Rabbi Mark
“A Priest and a Rabbi Walk into a Bar …” It’s Torah and Testament on Tap! And that’s no joke!
Thanks to the success of this program, Rabbi Mark and Father Steven Rice of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church will now offer two seatings at 6:00 PM AND 8:30 PM. Please note: your entire party must be present before being seated.
Third Thursday of the month, from September through May at 6:00 PM AND 8:30 PM Finnigan's Wake, 620 N. Trade Street Join us on Thursday, May 17 for the last gathering before summer break.
Yishar Koach - May you go on in strength, Felice
The relationship between staff, clergy, and lay leadership in any synagogue is critical for the success of the overall operation. Some call that model a three-legged stool. I am so grateful for our three-legged stool at Temple Emanuel and, consistently, so honored to be the clergy voice and presence here. Working with our staff and our lay leadership has always been among my greatest honors.
In June, Felice Brenner will conclude her responsibilities as Temple President and she has worked tirelessly to make sure our community – everyone’s “second Jewish home” – is one that is healthy, sound, and safe. I am grateful for her many, many hours of helping us find our way toward a more meaningful Jewish expression both on and off the property of 201 Oakwood Drive. As each of us, as Jews and non-Jews who are part of our community, explore services, Torah study, religious school, lifelong learning programs, social events, fundraisers, and more, Felice has been a supporter of allowing everyone to find their own way and path into temple life.
From Temple President to Immediate Past President, Felice will still carry Torah on the High Holy Days, reminding us all that our work with the temple and our own Jewish life is never done. Nor should it be. Felice, may you go from strength to strength in your work here and elsewhere and it is with deep appreciation for your devotion that I, as a partner in upholding our three-legged stool, thank you.
B’Shalom, Rabbi Mark

COURTNEY ANTHONY, DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION
In Gratitude
The Religious School just concluded a study of the Book of Genesis. One of the big questions
we explored during our study is posed to God by Cain early in the Genesis narrative: “Am I my
brother’s keeper?” The rest of Genesis answers this question with a resounding YES, culminating
in the story of Joseph’s reconciliation with his long-estranged brothers. The Torah makes clear
that it is our responsibility to care for our brothers and sisters. This key teaching is reinforced later
when we are instructed to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18), and in again in the
Talmud when we are told that, “All of Israel are responsible for one another” (Shavuot 39a).
During my years at Temple Emanuel, I have had the privilege of living and working in a community where this
teaching is practiced on a daily basis. From the time of my very first visit to Winston-Salem (when I came to
interview for the Director of Education position), I was warmly welcomed and embraced by the temple
community. Since then, I have celebrated countless holidays and simchas with all of you. I have had the honor
of getting to know your children at Religious School, and helping them to craft their b’nei mitzvah speeches. I
have staffed a congregational trip to Israel and experienced the wonders of that country – from Shabbat
morning on the beach in Tel Aviv, to picking potatoes in the fields at Leket, to touring the Old City in one-
hundred degree heat – with you. You have participated in Lifelong Learning, and even shared in my love of
Shakespeare as we studied The Merchant of Venice together. And just recently, when I lost my beloved
grandfather, I felt surrounded by your love and support at the shivah minyan. For four years, this community has
kept me, and Temple Emanuel has been not merely my place of work, but also my Jewish home.
Though I am excited to begin my new position at Wise Temple in Cincinnati, I am sad to say good-bye to my
Temple Emanuel family. I will miss you, but I know that I am leaving you in good hands with the incoming
Director of Education, Debi Rowe. I trust that you will welcome her as warmly as you welcomed me, and make
her time at Temple Emanuel as meaningful and memorable as mine has been.
It seems only fitting that I conclude with a quotation from The Merchant of Venice, describing the impact of
every deed of kindness: “How far that little candle throws his beams! So shines a good deed in a naughty
world.”
May your warmth and light always shine on.
With love,
Courtney

FOCUS ON REFUGEES BY TEMPLE EMANUEL
Refugees have been a focus this winter and spring at Temple Emanuel... From the interfaith “Strangers No More” service and dinner at Social Action Shabbat #1 on MLK weekend, to hearing about refugee resettlement efforts from Dean Clifford from Knollwood Baptist Church on Social Action Shabbat #2, to learning and exploring our people’s own refugee experience during Passover.
By the end of May, our second and third refugee families will have completed applications for Green Cards through World Relief and will be awaiting interviews with United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in Charlotte. The Shaker family, who arrived in the summer of 2016, has completed the process and are awaiting Green Cards. The Masamba family and El Ibrahim family, who both arrived, in the spring of 2017 will initiate the process this month. Your Tzedakah money covered the cost of the Shaker family’s fees and the monies you donated to Refugee Resettlement needs, along with some help from Knollwood Baptist and one of the families, will make the other applications possible. As we learned from the very informative talk by Dean Clifford, this is a major step in their process of becoming citizens and truly finding new homes after years of disruption. Thank you for helping make their dreams a reality.
2018 TZEDAKAH CAMPAIGN
Temple Emanuel continues to stand with other faith communities and organizations in our community to help those in need of food, shelter, refuge, medication and compassionate care during illness and grief. We are making a difference right here in our community through our donations of your yearly Tzedakah High Holy Days contributions. Remember our goal for 2018 is $2000 - only $7.14 per family that can make life better for those in need in Forsyth County.
This month we highlight Habitat for Humanity. Read how this organization works to help our neighbors with good affordable housing.
SERVING OUR COMMUNITY, IN MANY WAYS
A BIG THANK YOU to Amy and Bobby Lamy, Robert and Rebecca Schwartz, Lyle Jaffe, Barbara
Freiberg, Jenny Knudson, Melissa Glock and Rona Klein who helped prepare and serve a meal to
over 150 residents of the Ardmore community at the twice monthly Ardmore Methodist Church Food
Pantry Meal. This is the 3rd year Temple Emanuel has participated in this interfaith project with the
church to help alleviate hunger in the very community in which our Temple resides.
The Social Action Committee would like to recognize and thank Amy and Bobby Lamy for their more
than 20 years of faithful service volunteering at the Samaritan Ministries
once a month, since the first Mitzvah Day in October, 1996. Their
service is an inspiration to all of us to serve our community.

THE MAVENS (Senior Programming)
The Mavens completed the initial year of the L'Dor V'Dor
program with a picnic on Friday, April 20, attended by
many Jewish Students at Wake Forest. We consider this
program a success because through our efforts and
planning, Jewish students attend Temple Emanuel
services and celebrate various holidays with us. We are
thankful to the numerous Mavens who attend and
support our programs. Our gratitude to Regina Lobree
and Gail Bretan for their leadership with the L'Dor V'Dor
program. We look forward to planning next year’s pro-
grams. A big thanks to the BJH Foundation’s grant for financial support.
Attendance at our "Lunch and Learn" events, usually held the 2nd Thursday of the month at 12 noon,
(note: date change for June gathering) often preceded by Chair Yoga at 11:00 AM, has increased sub-
stantially. Many interesting programs are planned thanks to our Program Coordinator, Susan Surman.
Upcoming Programs:
● Thursday, May 10 - Creativity For Seniors. Nancy Hall, founder and director of the annual Second
Spring Festival of the Arts which promotes creativity among older adults and encourages them to
participate in the arts. Former president of Forsyth County AARP. NOTE: No Chair Yoga in May.
● Thursday, June 21 - Award winning Linda Weaver will talk about her experience as a portrait painter
and photographer.
● Sunday, July 29 - Paid-up membership trip. Join us for a bus trip to the Blumenthal Performing Arts
Center in Charlotte to see the award winning Broadway show, "The Book Of Mormon," followed by
dinner at a Lake Norman restaurant. All this for the cost of $50, plus the payment of your 2018-19
dues - $18. Contact Margot Lobree by email or call 415-385-1559 for availability of tickets.
If you are not a Maven, now is the time to join the senior group of Temple Emanuel.
For more information contact Herb Spindel at [email protected] or call
336-293-6604.
PRESCHOOL
It has been a crazy couple of months at Preschool! We can’t figure out the weather, are afraid to put our extra hats and mittens away, and we had two great holidays to celebrate. Rabbi Mark guided us through Purim and Passover, and the children were thrilled to make groggers and Hamantaschen, and Passover plates, Miriam’s cups, and matzah men, and then leave Egypt with Rabbi Mark, and enjoy a mini-seder too.
Now things settle down a bit, but we will be busy with spring projects and planning our dinosaur class graduation on May 24. Let’s hope the weather cooperates!
Rabbi Mark leads the Preschool students out of Egypt at the Seder.
Dinos enjoy Passover food tasting. Dinos enjoy Passover Puppet Play, Miss Sandy and matzoh eating “Red Hen.”.
