Gretchen Marie Callan was born on February 19, 1944 in Fredericksburg, Texas to Albert and Alberta Bonnell. She was raised in Muskogee, Oklahoma and graduated from Muskogee High School in 1962. After Graduating the University of Arkansas in 1966 she was a flight attendant for Pan American World Airways for 10 years while based in Washington D.C. and San Francisco, California. In 1976 she married David Callan and moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1977. In 1990, they purchased Daniel Screw Products where she worked in various

office capacities while raising their two children, Christine and Kurt. In 2008, Gretchen assisted Christine in opening Copa Vida Coffee in Durham, North Carolina. For a little over a year she was a partner and manager. In November of 2009, she was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer at Duke University Hospital. Gretchen returned to Tulsa in February of 2010 to continue treatment at Cancer Treatment Center of America where she died Saturday morning, October 23, 2010 at 2:15am. She is survived by husband David, son Kurt of Tulsa, daughter Christine of Durham and brothers Albert Bonnell, Robert Bonnell, and sister Bonnie Bonnell of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, October 26th at 10am at First United Methodist Church, Tulsa.

Charles Bunnell, [email protected] or 3211 Treemont St., SW, Huntsville, AL 35801-3459, sent me the obituary for his sister-in-law, Margo from the Evansville (IN) Courier & Press, August 11 & 12, 2010.

Margo J. Bunnell, 81, of Evansville passed away Monday, August 9, 2010 at Deaconess Hospital.

She graduated from Purdue University and started her career as a buyer with William H. Block Co. in Indianapolis. She returned to Evansville

and worked at Ruth Kishlines Clothing Store and retired from Rogers Jewelers. Margo was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church for over 32 years, a member of P.E.O. and Bible Study Fellowship.

She is survived by daughters Connie Walker and her husband Dan of Evansville and Cindy Moore and her husband Tim of Melbourne, FL., grandchildren Matthew Wright of Florence, KY, John Wright of Evansville, Ellen Moore and Daniel Moore both of Melbourne, FL, sister Helen Dunigan of Evansville, sisters-in-law Pauline and Annie Jaquess. She is preceded in death by brothers Howard, Paul, Joe, John and Wayne Jaquess.Visitation will be Thursday, August 12, 2010 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Ave., Evansville, IN 47714 and will continue form 10:00 - 11:00 Friday, August 13, 2010 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 5130 Lincoln Ave., Evansville, IN. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. at the church with Rev. Lynn Renne officiating.

Burial will be at Benson Cemetery in Owensville, IN.

Shirley (Bunnell) SargantMarch 16, 1934 – Feb. 15 2010.

No Services will be held for Shirley (Bunnell) Sargant, 75, of Florence. Shirley was born March 16, 1934, in Amity, to Buzz and Velva Bunnell. She died Feb. 15, 2010 at River Bend Hospital in Eugene. Shirley loved her family and her friends. She enjoyed fishing and hunting. Shirley is survived by her children, Marnita Smith, Danielle Helm and

Lester Swafford; brother, Gary Bunnell; sisters, Connie Blackburn, Sharon Dibblo and Tootsie Hoard; many nieces and nephews, grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, LaRoy Sargant; daughter, Lori Hallenbeck; sister, Myrna Redenbaugh; and her parents, Buzz and Velva Bunnell.

SubmissionsIn the last issue, on pages 40-41 I wrote about Jeannette Bonnell whom I erroneously identified as CB264541. She is actually 361541 in Claude’s database. Paul Garrity, [email protected], who provided the bulk of the information for that article has now sent the obituary for Jeannette from the Hunterdon County Democrat (Flemington, NJ)-April 4, 2002 and for her 2nd husband, John F. Gill, from The New York Times; Dec. 16, 1966:

Jeannette B. Lance ANNANDALE -- Jeannette B. Lance died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at Hunterdon Medical Center. She was 78. Born in Newark, she was raised in Glen Gardner by her grandparents, Horace and Anna Bonnell. She first married in 1943 to Leeland Norton, an Army Air Corps pilot who was killed during World War II. Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino, Calif., was named after him.

Shirley Bunnell Sargant



In 1945 she married Capt. John F. Gill, chief pilot of Eastern Air Lines. They resided in Chatham and Birmingham, Ala., before his death in 1966. She married again in 1970 to former state Sen. Wesley L. Lance, who survives her. She worked with the Helen Lance and J.P. McDougal real estate firms during the 1970s. In the 1980s, she was an employee at the Jane Smith retail clothing business and owned the Clothes Basket consignment shop in Clinton. She was a gubernatorial appointee to the Board of Managers of what is today called the Edna Mahan Correctional Center in Union Township. A son, John Gill Jr., died previously In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Beverly Gill Bradford of Rutherfordton, N.C., and Bobbi Gill Oliver of Union Township; and three sons, James Gill of Santa Fe, N.M., James Lance of Flemington and state Sen. Leonard Lance of Clinton Township. A memorial service will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. at the Clinton Presbyterian Church. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Martin Funeral Home in Clinton. Memorial contributions can be sent to the Hunterdon Medical Center, Intensive Care Unit, 2100 Wescott Dr., Flemington 08822.

Capt. John F. Gill, 65, Dies; Was Eastern’s Chief PilotSpecial to the New York Times

BIRMINGHAM, Ala, Dec. 15 [1966]- Capt. John F. Gill, former chief pilot and director of flight safety for Eastern Airlines, died yesterday at St. Vincent’s Hospital after a long illness. He was 65 years old and lived in the suburb of Homewood. Captain Gill, who was born in Saginaw, Mich. on Nov. 19, 1901, received his flying training in 1924 at the United States School of Aeronautics in San Antonio, Tex. He joined Eastern in 1930 as one of its original air-mail pilots. He was instrumental in developing night flying. He served as Eastern’s chief pilot from 1940 to 1960 and then, until his retirement in 1964, as the director flight safety. Captain Gill is survived by his widow, Jeanette; two sons, James and John R., and two daughters, Roberta and Beverly.

In regard to my mother, #340638:Rachel Ida [Bonnell] Adams, born February 8, 1907 at Dover, Iowa. Her father was Albert Bonnell, and her mother was Ida Alice Bargar. Albert Bonnell was born January 17, 1862 at Dover, Iowa. He died at Ames, Iowa, October 24, 1939. Ida Alice [Bargar] Bonnell was born February 14, 1865 near Farmington, Iowa. She died at Ames, Iowa, February 6, 1944. Both she and Albert are buried in the Bonnell family plot in the Ames Municipal Cemetery, at Ames. Rachel md. Theodore R. Adams in Chicago, Ill. October 1, 1930. He died in 1973 in San Diego, CA. Rachel died July 2, 1986 at Ames, Iowa. She is also buried in the Bonnell family plot in the Ames Municipal Cemetery at Ames.

In all she provided photos for several generations, descendants of Jean Bonel (1640 - ?) and Marie Lalon (164_ - ?), whose son Daniel Bonnell (1664-1740) and wife Marie Izambent (1666-1699) settled in South Carolina from France. Purportedly, a Benjamin Bonnell (CB004106) married a Hannah Golden about 1780. At some time in the past I was told that the source for this is The Report, Ohio Genealogical Society, 1986, Vol. 26, pg. 91. I asked John Grady, [email protected] or 4218 Oxhill Road, Spring, TX 77388, if he might be able to find the document in the Houston Clayton Genealogy Research Library. He wrote that “THE REPORT is bound and in the open stacks. As you will see, this references another source, THE CINCINNATI PIONEER, and this I did not locate. I did find A COLLECTION OF PIONEER MGE RECORDS ...data taken from John D. Caldwell's work. It appears that the Hamilton Co., Ohio records need a bit of research and this I will do when I get a bit more time.” I was able to find the reference, The Cincinnati Pioneer, but it contained the same info as in The Report. So here is what John was able to find for us:

“Gano and Stanley Account Book, 1794A general store was kept at Columbia by John Stites Gano and William Stanley. Listed are customers of 1794, residents primarily of eastern Hamilton County and men attached to Fort Washington. The roll may help to determine general arrival times in Ohio for some of the persons named. Original manuscript may be seen at The Cincinnati Historical Society. … Bunnel, SamuelBunnell, CalvinBunnell, LutherBunnell, Nath’l…”

[Ed. Note: Samuel is Samuel Bonnell, CB310238. His lineage is William1, Nathaniel2, Nathaniel3, Nathaniel4, Benjamin5, Samuel6; Calvin is likely 019983 and his lineage is unknown. He died in 1805 in Springfield twp, Hamilton co., OH; Luther is 029868 and his lineage is unknown. In 1792 he was a private in the Ohio Militia; I cannot determine who Nathaniel is.

THE CINCINNATI PIONEER, by John D. Caldwell (1873, pages 19-29) contains a list of the ‘Roll of Members, Class of 1812’, showing those who belonged to that class, having arrived in the North West Territory and in the State of Ohio after 1803. Also given are dates and places of birth. An earlier list was published in THE REPORT 24:3:170. In 1872, the Constitution was amended to provide (on payment of two dollars) that those in Ohio on or before 4 July 1815 might become members of Class No. 2, which is published on page 30 of the same work.

It is obvious that there are some errors in the list, primarily incorrect dates, such as Thos. Henry Yeatman, listed as born 1865, but a native of Cincinnati in 1805. In a few cases, some additional information is given in the actual record, which should be consulted. The copy has been placed on file at the OGS Library.

I believe that the comments in parenthesis indicate that the Western Star newspaper of 22 June reported them as married on June 16. Claude’s database shows the marriage as June 16 and references that newspaper as the source. However, I’m inclined to believe that the correct date is June 17.]

It was an interesting read and I contacted the author, Bill Cappello, who agreed to let me publish his article in the newsletter. It also serves as an interesting study in research methods.

By now, I suppose all Three Stooges fans have seen the MGM shorts they made with Ted Healy. Also appearing in these shorts is a young lady referred to in the opening credits as “Bonny.” I became interested in knowing more about “Bonny.” What was her real name? Was she still living? If alive, and willing and able to talk, she would be valuable from an historical point - she would know first hand how Healy really got along with Howard, Fine and Howard; how the routines were developed for the screen; and most importantly, what sequences were

filmed for the various shorts, and then cut from final release. This article is about my search for “Bonny.” My first place to check for any information on “Bonny” was in Ted Healy’s clipping files at New York Public Library’s Theatre Collection. In the multitude of clippings was one article, from the New York Daily News, dated December 26, 1935. The headline reads: “Ted Healy in Firebug Role Lands in Jail.” The article described how Healy, in a mischievous mood, forced his way int the apartment of “former showgirl Marion Bonnell” and set fire, on the kitchen stove, to bundles of her clothing and pieces of furniture. At one point in the article, she was referred to as “Marion W. Bonnell, age 26,” and Healy called her Bonnie. Now knowing what apparently was her real name, I checked the clipping files for Marion Bonnell, and found one, with just two newspaper clippings: one was a full -length photo of her, mentioning she was “one of the beauties” in a Broadway musical revue The Ramblers, dated February 21, 1927. The other was a portrait photo, obviously taken many years earlier, accompanying a couple of lines about the Ted Healy firebug episode, dated December 1935. Unfortunately, there were no clues as to her birthplace, or any marriages. Before continuing library research, I decided to call any living people who may have known her personally, in hopes that they’d be able to give me some leads. I talked to Paul “Mousie” Garner, who worked with her in Bill Rose’s Crazy Quilt, a 1931 Broadway musical revue. Garner said that in that show, Healy’s stooges were Dick Hakins, Jack Wolfe, and himself. He remembered her as being a very good dancer, but knew nothing about what became of her. Next call was to Muriel Evans, who played Healy’s wife in the MGM short The Big Idea. Muriel remembered working very briefly on the set, but did not know Bonnie at all. Final call was to Matt Brooks, who was a co-writer with Healy on the shorts. He knew nothing. So it was back to the library. In the Personal Name Index to the New York Times, I found one reference to Marion Bonnell. The article referred to was a mention of a marriage to a T.F. McGoey of Long Island, who met her while she was appearing in a show named Tell Me More in 1925. The marriage took place in New York City in May of 1926. I was able to get a copy of the marriage application, which gave me some personal information: her father’s name was John, mother’s maiden name Marion Evans, and she was born in Atlanta, Georgia. The man she married, Thomas E. McGoey, was a salesman. I was able to locate some relatives of his, who told me he was long dead, but that his marriage to Marion Bonnell didn’t last more than a few years, and, of course, they had no idea of what happened to her.

With the information that she was from Atlanta, I was able to locate a few of her relatives there. The most helpful was a first cousin, Lloyd Dixon (his mother and Bonnie’s father were brother and sister). He told me he never met her, but knew of her work on the stage and in movies with Healy. He was under the impression that Healy and Bonnie were married, but I’ve never found any documentation of this. Mr Dixon referred me to his daughter, Mrs. Jean Murray, who was keeper of the family history. Mrs. Murray gave me information from the family records that led me to another of Bonnie’s relatives, a first cousin on her mother’s side. Bonnie was born on August 1, 1905, in Thomasville, Georgia, the only child of John Wright Bonnell and Marion Evans Bonnell. Her full birth name was Marion

Wright Bonnell. With the information that her parents were married in Thomasville, the birthplace of her mother, I was able to locate another very helpful relative. Jim Evans whose


father and Marion’s mother were brother and sister, told me that Bonnie, whom he called “little Marion,” had died in Santa Monica, California on March 14, 1964, age 58. He told me he believed she was an alcoholic, and that when he visited his Aunt Marion in the 1950s (Bonnie’s mother lived with her since the early 1940s), he was not allowed to see Bonnie because she wasn’t in any condition to have visitors. He did tell me that her married name was Hayes, but he never met her husband. I applied for and received a copy of Bonnie’s death certificate. Her full hame is listed as Marion Bonnell Hayes; date of birth August 1, 1913, which is erroneous by eight years; married to Jack L. Hayes, an auto parts salesman, her last occupation, housewife, for 28 years. She died at Santa Monica Hospital, and an autopsy was performed to find the cause of death, which is listed a “fatty metamorphosis of the liver,” a condition which is caused by consumption of large amounts of alcohol over a long period of time; a contributing factor to her death was “cerebral edema” which is fluids collecting around the brain, which may be caused by a blow to the head. Bonnie was cremated and her ashes (known as cremains in the funeral business) are interred in their own niche at the Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum in Santa Monica. The final person I talked to was Marc Bentley, the man who owns the house in West Los Angeles where Bonnie and her husband last lived. Mr. Bentley told me that his house had been in his family for many years, and at the time Bonnie lived there, his brother Fred owned it. He said Fred rented out rooms to friends who were not in good financial circumstances. He recalled that Bonnie (he referred to her as Bonnie, a name that stayed with her since her association with Healy) was an alcoholic and things were very bad for her at the end. After her death, her husband Jack moved out of the house and was never seen again. So that’s the story of whatever happened to Bonnie Bonnell, Ted Healy’s first and only lady stooge on screen. Perhaps it was their mutual penchant to drinking that brought them together, but unfortunately, it was also the cause of their individual demise.”

[Ed. Note: Marion Wright Bonnell is 013998 in Claude’s database. This article provides considerable data for the database, such as the dates and places of Marian’s birth/death and her husbands. While I was searching for additional information on Bonnie, I found a Bonnie Bonnell who was a frequent guest of Ernest Hemingway during the 1920s. Ernest Hemingway; a life story by Carlos Baker, Scribner, 1969, on page 69 says that “[Hemingway’s] softer side appeared in the course of a few dates with Bonnie Bonnell, a striking six-foot brunette who was related to the wealthy family of Massey, who had endowed Massey Hall.” I don’t believe it is the same Bonnie though as this one lived, at least for some time, in Toronto. Additionally, I can find no relationship between Marion and the Massey family.]

Lewis Bonnel Biography

Lewis B. Bonnel is a native of Jay County, Indiana, born on the homestead of his parents, William and Rebecca Bonnel, May 11 1840. His parents came from Ohio to Jay County in the fall of 1838 and settled in Pike Township where they commenced building a home in the dense forest one half mile south of the present site of Collett. They improved eighty acres at this place, where they remained until 1861, when they sold, and bought a home on section 1, Pike Township, where the mother died in 1862. The father subsequently sold his land on section 1, and went to Kansas, but later returned to Pike Township, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Hannah Mays, in 1875. Twelve children were born to the parents of our subject—Mrs.



Hannah Mays, of Pike Township; Mrs. Sarah Ralph, deceased; Mrs. Elizabeth Garringer, of Pike Township; Henry was a member of the Sixty-ninth Indiana Infantry, and later in the war in the Nineteenth Michigan Light Artillery, in which service he died at or near Vicksburg; John, living in Michigan, was a soldier during the later months of the war; George was a member of Company H, One Hundredth Indiana Infantry, during the war and is now a minister in the United Brethren church, residing at Collett Station; Lewis B., the subject of this sketch; Mary Ellen, died at the age of nineteen years; Mrs. Susan Ralph (deceased), and James and William died in early childhood. Lewis B. Bonnel remained on the homestead with his father until he enlisted in defense of the Union, March 25, 1864, when he became a member of Company H, One Hundredth Indiana Infantry. As a recruit he joined the regiment at Dallas, Georgia, and took part in the great campaign which culminated in the capture of Atlanta, and was in all battles in which his regiment was engaged. He marched to the sea, and through the Carolinas, performing a soldier’s duty faithfully until the war was ended. Returning to Pike Township, he resumed farming, an avocation he has since followed. Mr. Bonnel was united in marriage June 4, 1868 to Miss Angeline Henry, who was born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, March 15, 1844, a daughter of Robert and Clarissa Henry, her mother dying when she was a child. When she was nine years old her father came to Jay County, Indiana, and settled in Wayne Township where she was reared and married. Her father is now living at Nashville, Tennessee. Mr. and Mrs. Bonnel are the parents of six children—Florence R., Naomi G., Robert W., Clarissa H., Emeline and Angeline (twins). Mr. and Mrs. Bonnel began housekeeping on section 11, Pike Township. Since 1880 they have made their home on Section 10 of the same township, where they have sixty acres of well improved and highly cultivated land, with good substantial building improvements, the entire surroundings showing the owner to be a thorough, practical farmer. In his political views Mr. Bonnel is a Republican. Mrs. Bonnel is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

European ResearchRight now I’m trying to pull together all the various pieces of data and sources for Cheshire. It’s not that I am especially confident that William the 17 th century immigrant came from there, but I have found a lot of data about Bunnells/Bonnells in that area and it has been stated in some publications that he came from there. So hopefully, next issue I’ll have some kind of a concise summary.
