VP Housing & Community Initiatives

Dear Resident,

This is a very unusual and difficult time in our lives. During my lifetime, we've endured challenges such as Super Storm Sandy, the financial recession of 2008, Swine Flu, Bird Flu and other disasters. In your lifetime, there may have been even greater and more difficult times. This too shall pass....

Please help me in recognizing and thanking the staff here at your property who are staying on duty to be here for you should the need arise. And I thank you, our residents, for calmly following the directives and new restrictions put into place to keep you safe.

Now is the time to spread kindness and to be patient and to reflect on others who live in this kind of uncertain, scary world all the time. Thankfully, here in the U.S., we have the resources to meet these chal-lenges and we will get through. As we approach the very sacred time of Easter and Passover, may each of you receive the comfort and Blessing that you need to sustain you through this challenging time.

It is only in our darkest hours

that we may discover the true

strength of the brilliant light

within ourselves that can never,

ever, be dimmed.

Administrator’s Corner

Hi Everyone,

I know that we are all tired of hearing about this virus. I know for sure I am. Hopefully,

soon we will be on the upside and getting back to normal. But for the time being, to make

this go away faster, it is appropriate for all of us to keep our distance. Please know that you

are not alone, we are in this together. When this is all over and we get the all clear, it should

be close to picnic weather. I promise you, we are going to have a really great Memorial

Day picnic this year! I can’t wait! Let’s think positive thoughts and put this virus in our

rear view mirror.

The other positive thing we have to look forward to is next month’s newsletter will be the

last one for me and Colleen to write. Keri will be back on May 1 and boy have we missed

her! She is doing great and so is the baby. She reports he is getting big and starting to

smile a lot.. I have a feeling a line will be forming to welcome her back.

Happy Days are ahead of us. Please be patience. We will get through this.

Kathy

Making a Difference…Keep it clean.

One of the most important ways to prevent the Corona Virus is not just keeping at a distance

but keeping “touch surfaces” clean. Touch surfaces includes light switches, doorknobs, fau-cets, counter tops, bathrooms. Please clean with a disinfecting cleaner or a cleaner contain-ing bleach. Also, please remember to clean the doorknobs on your front door and the han-dles on the storm doors. This will help kill any germs and prevent illnesses.

Precautions to take at this time:

FOOD STAMPS (NJ SNAP) IMPORTANT NOTICE:

(TRENTON) – Many New Jerseyans who receive food assistance through the NJ Supple-mental Nutrition Assistance Program (NJ SNAP) will receive an extra benefit payment on Sunday and their benefits will be higher in April to help address critical food needs related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Recipients will receive their first supplemental benefit on their Families First EBT card on Sunday, and will be able to use the benefits beyond the month of

Mike’s Maintenance Memo Just to be on the safe side, we are sanitizing a number of areas outside on our property. In

case you haven’t noticed, Scott and I are working hard to keep all of the outside “HOT

SPOTS” clean. Daily we wipe down the stair railings, grab bars, and mailboxes for added

protection. Additionally when we are delivering items and notices we are wearing gloves .

Until further notice we will only be responding to emergency work orders. During this time

please continue to call in maintenance requests and they will be put into the computer system

so that they can be addressed when we start doing regular work orders again.

Please remember to break down your cardboard boxes and place them into the recycling bin.

Leaving cardboard outside of the bins results in them flying around the property. Also boxes

not broken down take up too much space in the recycle bins. Additionally boxes such as

pizza boxes that have food residue on them cannot be recycled. Remember recycling

containers are for recycling ONLY.

As a reminder, our maintenance hours are Monday thru Friday

from 8:00AM to 4:30PM. For after hour & weekend emergencies,

please call 609-335-6034.

A Message from the Foundation United Methodist Communities’ associates have been true superheroes during this COVID-19 pandemic, continuing to serve our residents with the creativity, compassion, and dedication our seniors deserve. The Foundation is focused on doing all we can to support them during this unprecedented challenge. With the support of our donors, we are provid-ing donations, technology and other positive messages where we can to help associates and residents, and a special appeal is underway to fund an appreciation bonus for all staff serving in our communities.

You or your families can help with this fund by going to the Foundation's webpage:

Wellness and Self Care

From Beth Martin, Wellness Nurse

Law enforcement officials are seeing increased efforts by scammers looking to take advantage of the coronavirus pandemic to prey on U.S. consumers, in particular. The Federal Communications Commission has sought to raise awareness by providing information on examples of spam calls. And one example is "If you want to receive free masks or a testing kit delivered overnight to your home, please provide your Medicare Id number," a voice on one of the calls says. And pushes by saying "Protect your loved ones from the coronavirus." And other callers say that they have a COVID 19 incentive check for you and they need your bank account number so it can be deposited into your account. NEVER GIVE OUT ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION WHICH INCLUDES YOUR ADDRESS, SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER, MEDICARE NUMBER AND BANK ACCOUNT INFORMATION.

Be Alert to Scams

I know we have all been spending the last several weeks preparing to stay home, learning what we can do to prevent the spread of the Corona virus and lots and lots of hand washing! Mental health experts recommend we all practice some self-care at this time.

Social distancing does not have to mean social isolation. Reach out and call some family and friends you have not spoken to in a while. Try to avoid discussing the current situation and instead catch up and reminisce.

If your family is dropping food off to you, ask them to consider dropping off some fresh flowers, your favorite magazine, a jig saw puzzle, a movie or a book from their home col-lection.

Outside is not closed! Go for a walk. If you run into a friend or neighbor while you are out, stop and chat but please remember you must remain 6 to 10 feet apart.

It has been my pleasure over the last 2 weeks to speak to most of you by phone. I will continue to check in with you from time to time to see how you are doing.

Activities and other Distractions

As we are all doing our part and staying home. Many people are using this

time to try a new recipe. Here’s one you might like to try that is easy, tasty

and healthy.

FROM COLLEEN’S KITCHEN

Chicken & Veggie Stir Fry (2 portions)

Ingredients:

1 chicken breast, cubed

salt & pepper to taste

1/2 cup broccoli

1/2 cup mushrooms, sliced

1/2 cup thinly sliced carrots

Oil for frying

Sauce: 1 clove of garlic, minced. 1 teaspoon ginger, minced. 1/2 teaspoon of sesame oil, 1/4 cup reduced sodium soy sauce, 1/4 tablespoon brown sugar, 1/4 cup of chicken broth and 3 tablespoons of flour.

Preparation:

In a pan on medium-high heat, add oil and cook thru and brown chicken. Season with salt and pepper. Remove cooked chicken from pan.

In same pan, heat additional oil and add carrots stir until they start to soften then add broccoli and when it has almost cooked add mushrooms. When done remove veggies from pan.

Add additional oil to the pan & sauté garlic & ginger. Add remaining sauce ingredients and stir until smooth. Return chicken and veggies to sauce and stir until heated through.

With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.

Here are some ideas for activities and others ways to distract you from the news.

1. Turn off the TV and take a break from the news.

2. Take a walk.

3. Look through old photos.

4. Read a book.

5. Take a nap.

6. Sit on your patio or balcony and take in the sunshine & fresh air.

7. Watch a movie.

8. Pray or meditate.

Passover is the Jewish holiday which is a celebration of the liberation of their people in ancient times from the terms of slavery that were imposed upon them by the Egyptians. One of the greatest movies ever made tells the story of this plight. The 10 Commandments

which usually airs Palm Sunday or Easter weekend and is a tradition to watch by many American households every year. If you have never seen it, you are truly missing a classic movie that gets better every time you watch it.

HAPPY EASTER

In 2016 The Peeps Eating World Championship was held. The winner ate 200 Peeps in 5

minutes.

Peeps are the number one candy sold at Easter. Although, one survey says Reese’s Eggs are

number one. (I would vote for Reese’s too!)

If you put a Peep in the microwave, they get really, really big. (Yes, as a matter of fact I

have entertained my children with this trick.)

Some people get really creative with Peeps and make Peep Krispy Treats, Sunflower Cake

with Peeps and yes, Peeps on Pizza called “Peepza”

1.5 BILLION Peeps are eaten every Easter.!!!!!

Who doesn’t love Easter? Flowers,

candy, rabbits and Peeps.

Here are some Peep facts for our Peeps:
