BANKSTOWN GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL 3
We have now reached the
end of our first term and it
all seems to have gone
incredibly fast. So much
has happened in a short
period of time.
This week year 12 will
complete their Half
Yearly Exams and then
will eagerly await their
results. I want to
encourage you to look
carefully at the feedback
that you get from your
teachers. This is essential
for you to understand the
areas where you are
confident and doing well
and the areas where you
need to work hard to
prepare for your trial
exams and finally the HSC.
This year teachers will
be spending time
working with year 12 to
conference write their
report comments. We
expect that with your
daughter talking in detail
with her classroom
teacher to conference the
report comment the
feedback will be clear and
valuable to ensure that
your daughter has clear
expectations of her areas
of strength and areas
where she needs to work
harder.
Year 10 will have now
completed their first
round of assessment
and will have a good idea
of how they are
performing in their
subjects. Most courses in
year 10 have four
assessment tasks and
generally these are worth
on average 25% of the
marks for their course.
This means it is very
important for the girls
to try their best with
every assessment they
are required to complete.
At the end of the year the
school will submit a grade
to the NSW Educational
Standards Authority –
NESA (formerly the Board
of Studies). This grade
will form the first result
that is recorded on the
girls’ Record of School
Achievement (RoSA). If
the girls miss or fail to
complete even one
assessment task it can
have a dramatic effect on
their final grade. At the
beginning of the year the
girls were sent a copy of
the Assessment Booklet
that contains the rules
and procedures for
assessment in year 10. It
is important that they are
familiar with these
procedures.
Year 8 are progressing
well at this stage and I am
happy to say that I have
had very few reports of
any problems appearing.
As I wander to classes and
have a look at what the
girls are doing I am
pleased to see how
engaged they are with the
learning that is taking
place in the classroom.
This will help them to
ensure that they are
improving their skills and
should translate to
improved outcomes on
their half yearly report.
Finally I would like to
wish everyone a safe and
restful break. This has
been a busy term for
everyone and a rest is
well deserved.

BANKSTOWN GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL 4
Another busy term is
nearly over so I would
like to take this
opportunity to wish all
of you a good holiday
and thank you for a
successful term. This
term has been successful
for a number of reasons.
I immediately think of
the effort that has been
put into creating a
stimulating learning
environment in the
Library. To this end we
have been working very
hard in looking at the
learning space and how
it can best meet the
needs of 21st century
learning. Next term the
library will be
transformed into a
wonderful centre for
learning with new
furniture, computers
and the last of the new
shelving to be installed.
We hope that this will
become a vibrant and
dynamic learning area
for all to enjoy. Thanks to
Ms Hawkins, Ms Barnes,
Ms Carmody, Mr Leary,
Mr Nadile and Mrs
Harper for their ideas,
input and enthusiasm in
helping make this
possible.
This term also brought
to BGHS two successful
sporting events: The
whole school swimming
carnival and the whole
school athletics carnival.
The whole school
swimming carnival is
particularly great cause
for celebration as we
have not had such a
whole school event in a
long while. We had a
marvellous day where
both students and staff
enjoyed the opportunity
to compete, to connect
and to succeed.
Attendance was strong
and some records were
broken. Well done
everyone. A particular
thankyou to the PD/H
/PE staff and to the PASS
girls who organised the
days and to the rest of
the teaching staff who
supported the days with
such enthusiasm. On
this note I would also
like to welcome Mr
Ghazal to the school as
the relieving Head
Teacher PD/H/PE. He
has been warmly
received by staff and
students and I hope that
he enjoys his time with
us and finds his
experience in leadership
a valuable journey.
Thank you to staff and
students for continuing
to make BGHS the great
place that it is. Again,
have a wonderful
holiday and we'll see you
back on the 24th April if
you teach and the 26th of
April if you learn!!

On Friday 17th of March,
Bankstown Girls’ High
held yet another
successful World’s
Greatest Shave event
hosted by the SRC. Last
year the SRC managed to
raise approximately
$700 which was a great
effort. This year we
raised a staggering $943
in donations for the
Leukemia Foundation in
less than a week. The
week leading up to the
event, the SRC gathered
together to encourage
students to donate
money to the leukemia
foundation. It was a lot of
‘harassing’ by the SRC
students and Ms Alam
during recess and lunch
but it was definitely
worth it. On the day of
the fundraiser, the SRC
hosted stalls such as hair
spray, hair braiding, hair
extensions and tattoos
along with a mini
Bankstown Girls’ High
School radio station
hosted by our very own
SRC senior
representatives Pou
Tukumoe and Grace
Sabine.
Our school hall is where
the main event took
place. Hundreds of
students entered to
partake in a number of
fundraising activities
and enjoy busting some
moves. Shout out to
Sandishia, Viola,
Tiangay, Mariama, and
Osli who literally were
on their feet dancing
throughout recess and
lunch. A special shout
out to Fatimah Kabah in
year 7 who showed off
her ‘juju on the beat’
moves. However, the
main event that took
place was at lunch
involving Mr Gutteridge
and Mr Ristevski. Mr
Ristevski agreed to
shave his beard if we
raised $800 and Mr
Gutteridge decided to
shave his legs if we
raised $801. We raised
more than what was
expected. First up was
Mr Gutterudge who
shaved his hairy legs. It
took him all of lunch, the
help of Deane and Eliza
and encouraging chants
to get him to his now
venus silky-smooth
shiny legs. Well done Mr
Gutteridge who now
feels the cold breeze on
his hairless legs. Next up
was Mr Ristevski who
took a brave step to
shave his beard. A
paparazzi of students
surrounded the stage
waiting for Mr Ristevski
to make an appearance.
With the help of our MCs
Grace and Pou, the
students started the
chant for Mr Ristevski to
come out “RISTEVSKI,
RISTEVSKI, RISTEVSKI”
echoed through the
school hall. He finally
came out. It was difficult
for to shave all that thick
coarse hair off his face
(sorry sir) so Mr Vrhovac
had to come to the
rescue. Emotions ran
heavy through the hall
BUT we are very proud
of you sir and appreciate
the sacrifice you made
for the Leukemia
Foundation. Thank you
very much Mr Gutteridge
and Mr Ristevski.
We would also like to Mr
Dalton who ended up
getting a ‘crazy’ hair
spray hair-do, Ms Nardi
who straightened her
WORLD’S GREATEST SHAVE #2K17

BANKSTOWN GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL 7
natural curly hair to a
sleeker look, and Ms
Carpenter who rocked
braids. Thank you all for
your commitment.
The hall is where the
main event took place.
Centre stage with
hundreds of students
surrounding like a mob
of paparazzi. First up
was Mr Gutteridge who
shaved his HAIRY legs
for $801. He was now
left with silky, smooth
skin. It took him the
whole of lunch to shave
his legs and by the end of
it he had TWO students
helping him shave his
legs! .Gutteridge now
says that he can feel the
cold with his bare
hairless legs.
Mr Ristevski SHAVED his
beard for $800!! A
paparazzi of students
surrounded the stage
waiting for Mr Ristevski
to make an appearance.
The MC’s Grace and Pou
hyped up the crowd and
the students suddenly
started chanting and
cheering for Mr
Ristevski to come out “
RISTEVSKI , RISTEVSKI ,
RISTEVSKI !! ” After all
that chanting, he came
out. In the hands of an
SRC student
Ristevski allowed her to
shave his beard. Not
even half way through
Mr Vrhovac took over as
the student was having
some difficulties with all
that thick hair on his face
(hahaha). As his hair fell
into his hands, you could
see the emotions
running through the
room.
Mr Dalton ended up
getting a so called ‘crazy’
hair do with a whole
heap of coloured
hairspray. In the
meantime Ms Nardi
changed from her
natural curly hair to a
fabulous straightened
look. Thank you to all
our helpers and
volunteers on the day of
the event.
Also a BIG shout out to
Mr Ghazal, Mr Vrhovac
and Ms Alam who made
very generous donations
to the Leukemia
Foundation. A big round
of applause to all who
partook in this event.
Last but never least, our
SRC – we did good girls.
Here’s to another bigger
and better World's
Greatest Shave next
year!

Waking up at 5:00am
isn’t something that
would sit well with many
people, however with
the holy miracle that is
24/7 McDonalds, we
were able to pull
ourselves to school at
6:00am. Now, you may
be wondering why we, as
night owls, would
volunteer ourselves for
the ZONTA Women’s
Breakfast on the 8th of
March. Well, well, let me
tell you the ZONTA
breakfast is a gathering
for both men and
women, to come
together to empower
women through service
and advocacy. The
ZONTA club strives to
improve women’s health
and well-being, ensure
women’s representation
in decision making
processes and work
together to end violence
against women.
After (thankfully) only
having to cross the street
to get ready for this
prestigious event, we
were greeted with the
best sight that we could
come upon at 6:30 in the
morning - free breakfast,
as far as the eye could
see. With our forks and
knives tucked into our
scones and a room full of
other high school
students and teachers
we prepared ourselves
for the incredible
speakers that were to
come.
The first part of the
event consisted of the
‘Candle Ceremony’,
where the students who
were awarded with
Citizenship Awards and
Young Men Standing
Against Family Violence
Awards, including our
very own Noura Hijazi,
received a lit candle,
stood in certain
positions around the
room and led a pledge
that plays tribute to
what it is to be a woman
in today’s society.
The pledge:
We light these candles as
a symbol of women, in our
midst and around the
world, who do not enjoy
our high living standards.
We take this time to
reflect on women who are
denied the personal
freedoms we cherish.
We take this time to
reflect on ourselves.
We take this time to
recommit ourselves to
working for a world
without violence and
discrimination against
women.
We recall the many
women in our local
community who live daily
in fear, shame and terror,
who are forced to seek
shelter and support from
refuges and their
agencies, who themselves
are struggling to survive.
We honour the memory
of the too many women
who have died as a result
of violence perpetrated
by those they have love
and trusted.
We recall the thousands
of women and children
around the world being
trafficked for domestic
and sexual slavery,
including those in our
Australian community.
We recognize, as we work
for a world without
domestic violence,
slavery and
discrimination, that,
while we have a long road
ahead, our global
ZONTA IWD BREAKFAST
[THE BUZZ] ISSUE #2 2017
BANKSTOWN GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL 12
community is capable of
making great and
sweeping changes in the
way we live our lives.
We are encouraged by
the strength of men who
take the White Ribbon
Oath, who are proud to
“stand up, speak out and
act to prevent men’s
violence against women.”
We are encouraged by
the young men in our
community who stand
strong against domestic
violence, some of whom
we honour today.
With this in mind, we
claim great hope. We
affirm that love is
stronger than hate, and
that, in partnership with
enlightened men, we will
re-establish the right of
women and girls to be
free from family and
cultural violence.
We pledge our strength
and commitment to bring
this dream to reality.
We were also incredibly
fortunate to have
witnessed such
emotionally provoking
and motivational
speeches from both a
student from Homebush
Boys named Ibrahim
Taha and Dr Deama Amr,
a Principal Clinical
Research Specialist.
These speeches had the
ability to bring the entire
room on the brink of
tears due to both
sadness and joy.
Finally, after witnessing
the presentation of the
Young Women in Public
Affairs Award, The
highest award that is
given out during the
ZONTA Breakfast, we
were on our way back to
school with new
mindsets and
perspectives on being a
women in today’s
society. By the end of the
event, I was just happy to
take that tight blazer off.

*slams books onto the
table* Look. The dream
was practically simple:
1. Waking up at an
unbelievably indecent
(coughs- 5 Am.) hour in
the morning to dwell on
the fact that this was our
last Athletics Carnival.
2. Getting into my
costume- and feeling
hella satisfied with the
final result.
3. Eating the most
ridiculous breakfast
possible- ahem… a bowl
of wheat-bix ruined by 5
table spoons of sugar.
(What? I gotta have my
vitamins *wink wink*)
4. Enjoying every event
in the sun, making a total
fool out of myself…
Was that too much to ask
for? Who would’ve
guessed- that those
dreams (for some weird
reason I feel like this
dream was only on my
part) were pretty much
crushed by the absence
of the sun???
On the 15th of March on a
gross but oh-so happy
Wednesday- our
anticipation is met by
the sound, feel and smell
of rain excitement for
the events to come.
Bright dashes of blue,
green, yellow and red-
BGHS couldn’t have been
more enthusiastic!
Excluding the strange
weather- the event was a
success! Thanks to all of
the staff members who
were there as well as the
dedicated members of
the PASS Team, the
Athletics Carnival was
able to run smoothly- the
rain didn’t seem to faze
any of them. Also, a
massive congratulations
to the Age Group
Champions- the weather
never broke their spirits
lol. As for the Year 12
Dance? You guys did
AMAZINGGGGGG- better
than the years before
(and after). A special
shout out to the Dance
Committee too (cause
why not?)- oh and the
BBQ people- a pat on the
back to you too. *grins
cheekily*
Without the support of
the entire school body,
the athletics carnival
wouldn’t have been
possible so- what can I
say except- THANK
YOU!!!!!! Enjoy the
photos- if you haven’t
already skipped my
paragraph… *sighs*

Harmony Day. People of
Australia that live in
Bankstown and its
surrounding suburbs
know the meaning of
living in harmony. The
variety of cultures that
exist in Australia are the
key to Australia’s known
multicultural society
which makes it very
diverse and special. This
significant day was held
on March 21st at
Bankstown Girls’ High
School. Guest speaker
Louise Tran from a
Vietnamese background
spoke in front of year 7
and 8 students along
with some year 11s and
12 students that were
there to perform on this
special day.
Louise Tran shared the
refugee experience of
her mother and father
who escaped to Australia
because of war in
Vietnam. The speaker
told the journey without
revealing the identity of
the man and woman in
her story until the very
end which made it
universal and relatable.
This was very
meaningful to the
students as it inspired
them to share their
refugee stories and
experiences. Side note:
the speaker had a son,
his name was Jack
MASHALLAH (bless him)
his cheeks and his
laugh… He laughed at my
weird baby noises and
faces in that hour more
than my niece ever had
in the past 8 months. The
point I am trying to make
is that he was the cutest
and most well-behaved
baby ever!
Back to the event… we
also had various musical
performances from
students of different
years. Tanya, who sang
‘Hallelujah’ blew us all
away with her angelic
voice. We had two group
performances from year
11 students and a
performance from girls
in different years. A
group of year 8 students
– Ivonne, Bernadette and
Jouman gave a
presentation of the
meaning and importance
of harmony day and
presented a slideshow of
students from all around
the world holding signs
describing harmony day
with one word and of
course I described it
using three ‘All In 1’
NAILED IT!
Donations were
collected on the day and
orange ribbons were
given to those who were
kind enough to chip in.
Thanks to all teachers
who were apart of the
day, and to the talented
students who
contributed in the
musical performances
and some who pulled a
song last minute (ehm
backup plan).
I am so thankful to be in
Australia and I say this
as a proud immigrant of
this multicultural
country.

What is ‘Faculty of the
Month’?
Faculty of the Month is a
SRC initiative to
acknowledge the hard
work, efforts and
commitment of our
teachers and faculties.
We appreciate the
consistent effort shown
by all staff members at
BGHS and would like to
say thanks for all that
they do to make our
school a safe, respectful
learning environment.
We are extremely lucky
to be part of a school
community with a strong
support network.
This month the Faculty
of the Month was
awarded to the PDHPE
faculty. It was a
challenging term for this
faculty however, they
took some risks and
proved to pull through
whatever was heading
their way – rain, storms,
buses, more rain, more
storm, and more buses.
On behalf of the whole
school, the SRC would
like to say thanks or all
your dedication and
perseverance this month
in organising successful
whole school events
such as the swimming
carnival and athletics
carnival. We really
appreciate all the
planning that went into
administrating
successful events.
GREAT WORK!

The Vampire Diaries… A
title I’ve gotten used to
saying in the past 8 years
of my life. ‘Hey do you
watch TVD?... HOW GOOD
WAS THAT EPISODE ON
TVD???... NO DELENA!...
NO STELENA!’ yeah
basically the
conversations TVD fans
had with each other in the
past 8 years. The show
finally comes to an end
with 8 years of memories
and nostalgia which
drives fans off the edge as
they watch the
development of the
characters throughout
the series. I still
remember when the pilot
episode first came out
back in 2009 with that
stupid crow that
appeared every time
Damon showed up.
Thinking back, I don’t
understand how I kept
watching the series from
there on. The most
important thing to know
about the first four
episodes is that they are
seemingly pointless;
focused on cheap thrills,
romance, and teen drama.
Then something magical
happens, creeping up
silently and latching on
without the viewer's
notice. The series
explores the story of the
vampire brothers, Damon
and Stefan, when they
return to Mystic Falls
after over a century of
being away. Stefan ends
up falling for Elena blah
blah blaaaahahaha (no
one cares cuz she’s
waaaay cuter with
Damon) but then Damon
is absolutely HATED by
the viewers in the
beginning of the series
with his straightened
black hair and blue eyes
*insert heart eyed emoji
here* and the plot goes
on. The variety of
supernatural on this show
is insane. You have
werewolves, vampires,
THE VAMPIRE DIARIES
END OF AN 8 YEAR JOURNEY
[THE BUZZ] ISSUE #2 2017
BANKSTOWN GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL 23
witches, doppelgangers,
hybrids, psychics,
immortals, sirens, ghosts
and… I can’t be bothered
going on because the list
is pretty long. Anyways,
some book fans will hate
on the show but like you
can’t expect a show to be
a replica of the book ever.
You’re talking about more
than 8 seasons (I wish).
One thing you should
know about this show is
that no one dies…
literally. I guess they do
die but in some stupid
other world they do exist.
Some Bennett magic here
and there will somehow
creep their way back into
Mystic Falls. It might be
an advantage in some
people’s opinion but after
all the grief they put us
through, they resurrect
the character in some
dumb way and my tears
go for nothing. By the
time a character dies for
real, you stay in denial
thinking they’re going to
come back even if it takes
3 seasons… TRUST ME
THEY WILL COME BACK!
Some characters will die
but that’s just because the
actors are so bored of
acting in the show (their
loss HA!). Don’t let this
stop you from watching
though, it’s a deep,
emotional ride that goes
on for 8 years. However, if
you’re a person that’s
going to binge watch it
then you can’t relate. It’s
kind of interesting to see
how many times a person
can die on that show
though, you will literally
lose count.
Let’s move on to the final
season, the season that
ends it all, the 8 year
journey of semi-grief,
tears, heartache,
heartbreak, hearts ripped
out… literally. YA know
how every series has this
boring season that no one
gets and everyone kind of
loses interest and just
wants it to end already,
that’s how season 7 was.
So, by the time they
announced season 8 to be
the final season, it was a
slight relief to some. But
once you start watching
season 8, they recount the
nostalgic episodes of
season 1 and all those
triggering lines from
episodes in the first
season that makes you
want to crawl up in a ball
and just cry because you
miss those days. THE
days. Those who expected
a downfall for the final
season of TVD… WELL
YOU’RE WRONG. YEAH
YOU! Because that ripped
out my heart just like
Damon rips out Sybil’s
heart every second
episode *Rolls eyes and
smiles sneakily because
YAS SLAY*. The last
episode is where
everyone is officially
dead… The fans I mean. I
would literally beg you to
watch the entire series
JUST for the last episode
because you’re going to
bawlllllll *digs a hole and
bawls*
Finally, through ups and
downs, deaths and
resurrections, The
Vampire Diaries kept it
wild, interesting and
mostly emotional. In my
opinion, the show ended
on a fair point and the
only ending that this
show deserved. So, good
bye to my 8 years of
happiness, sadness,
anger, and childhood (I
was 9 years old when I
started it *single tear
falls*). Thank you, TVD,
for being interesting and
boring sometimes… but I
still loved you, because
first loves will never go
away.

textbooks combined.
The following are 5 ways
on how to help our

these tips to help save
energy.

Report any water leaks

BANKSTOWN GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL 25
Written by Anooshay Omer
Last Sunday a few
students from Year 9
attended a prestigious
writing workshop held
in the BDYS that is
working towards
helping a few of the Year
9 students to conduct a
novel over the course of
the school year.
On the first day, when we
finally got there it was
like a rush of adrenaline
and satisfaction. The
space we worked in
during this course was
very inspiring and
different as they were
disparate types of
graffiti artwork on the
walls as well as other
beautifully displayed
images and quotes in the
room.
At first my group of
friends and I that
attended the workshop
were very intrigued as
well as intimidated due
to the fact that there
were many very, very
tall university students
that were attending the
workshop as well. In fact,
we were the only
teenagers there. Then
the workshop continued
and we gradually eased
into it.
Our day consisted of
heaps and heaps of
freestyle writing and
getting to know
ourselves as authors.
Richard aka the Swag
King (writing workshop
host) put some writing
prompts, phrases and
quotes, on massive
papers, all over the room
walls and told us to pick
the text that speaks the
most to us and then
write something in 10
minutes putting the
quote in the centre of our
story.
So then it was Round
One of writing for 10
minutes without
completely zoning out,
and it was at that
moment that I realised
that the quotes I choose
were in fact utterly
irrelevant to my type of
writing and thus, poor
me could not think of
anything related to
‘Breadcrumbs.’ (Yes,
that’s what I chose.
That’s what ‘spoke to
me’. At least I discovered
I am weirdly attracted to
breadcrumbs. Thanks
Richard. )
I wrote and wrote for 5
minutes and then started
making weird eye
signals to my friend
trying to figure out what
to write. We were both
suffering from the
infamous ‘Writers
Block.’ Then slowly our
eye communication
shifted to our jazz hand
communication and then
a struck of luck hit me. At
the last minute, I came
up with a brilliant idea
but then the buzzer went
off and I had run out of
time but I continued
writing and created a
decent piece.
Finally, it was time for
Round 2. This time we all
wrote and wrote as we
were more comfortable
in letting our creativity
control the pen and flow
freely.
These prompts really
assisted us to discover
our type of creativity and
authenticity in our
writing. This activity
also taught us how to

utilize our imagination,
letting our minds roam
our creativity and run
free from all restrictions.
It was a great
opportunity to let loose
and relate our lives as
well as invest our
emotions into our
writing any way we
wanted to as well as to
learn about our
characters in our
upcoming novels.
Overall, it was a great
experience that
encouraged us to be
highly creative and non-
judgemental about the
technical concepts of a
piece of writing and
focus more on the
emotional concept of our
writing. Therefore,
Richard gave us these
sessions for us to focus
on this concept and not
feel restricted in our
creativity and choose the
topics that related to us
the most, in order to
eventually produce an
exquisite masterpiece
that relates to us.
In conclusion, the
writing workshop was a
very enticing and
different experience
where we explored our
individuality and
creativity with unique,
fun filled activities.

We didn’t want it to come to
this but some things are just
inevitable. It all started
when Mr Gutteridge and his posse took a stance against
the NRL Bulldogs and their
loyal, passionate fans. It was the one and only Mr ‘Gutto-
Go’ who teacher-pressured
Queen B, Nat V, and Sama
with-a H to wear the green
and white Raiders jersey. In
flash mob style they
stormed into the school hall during the World’s Greatest
Shave to make a statement
about the Raiders winning
the grand final in 2017…we
heard that back in 1995,
1996…2001, 2002,
2003….2010, 2012…. 2015, 2016… you get the gist… It is
not going to happen…stop
trying to make raiders happen. The so-called ‘green
machine’ clearly can’t do its
job. The raiders couldn’t
even beat the Broncos, a
team that was easily
defeated by the bulldogs.
You would think that ‘if it’s
green then it must be sustainable’ but this clearly
doesn’t apply to the raiders
winning a premiership. Word of advice - you should
never sledge doggies fans
and now it really is too late
to say sorry. Below is a list of
facts for all those anti-
bulldogs people in our
school – Mr Nadile, Mr Vrhovac, Mr Gutteridge, Mr
Ghazal, Ms Carmody
(#sorrynotsorry), Samah
(the girls with the green
bucket on her head and who
falls with a flick), Natalie
Veljanovska (no words) , Queenie Nguyen (regrets
ever wearing that green and
white jersey):
- Raiders haven’t won a
Grand Final since 1994 –
23 years
- Raiders haven’t been in
the finals since 2004 –
13 years
- Raiders definitely won’t
be the premiership
winners in 2017
- Why does Mr Gutteridge
wear a raiders hat on his
head? It’s hard to put the
raiders on top of
anything else.
Now, here are some known-
facts that all you anti-
Bulldogs peeps need to
acknowledge:
- We have been in the
finals in the last 5 years
- We should have won the
2014 grand final but we
wanted to end the
Rabbitohs grand final
drought
- We will make it to the
finals in 2017
- We will be the grand
final champions of 2017
WHY RAIDERS GUTTO-GO!?!
What have
we done?!?
