MICHAELMAS TERM 2014

CRANLEIGH PREPARATORY SCHOOL

THE

From culture comes strength

As you know, Cranleigh Abu Dhabi is the first other ‘branch’ of Cranleigh that is not in Cranleigh! The school sits at the majestic coast of Saadiyat Island and perfectly blends in to the beauty of the surrounding landscape. It is a school which has impressive plans for growth, as it is expected to have 1500 pupils by 2020. The school has bright, modern buildings; the children’s favourite seems to be library, which many of their pupils have suggested is, “like a whole other world”.

We contacted some pupils at our sister school in Abu Dhabi to ask them about their new school. They told us lots about their new school, which they clearly love. Primarily, it seems, all the pupils say that the food is brilliant! Every student inter-viewed said that their favourite foods are the pasta dishes.

Unlike us, they do not have a sixth day during their week, which runs from Sunday to Friday to fit in with the Muslim Holy Day on Friday. They also enjoy different school holidays: National Day and Eid. They have just named their houses: Sadeeq (Friend), Etihad (Unity), Al Sharaf (Honour) and Zaeem (Leader).

The students said that “here are too many cultures to count” at their school. Due to their proximity to the coast and the warm weather, they are able to kayak and sail in games sessions. They all love how it feels to be part of the “big Cranleigh family” and love how easy it is to make friends there. Although they don't yet have boarding or extra curricular lessons, it was clear from our discussions with our peers in Abu Dhabi that it is a lovely, happy school, with wonderful teachers and children. What a perfect addition to the Cranleigh community!

Maths Puzzle Day GEts us all

thinking

On 16th October 2014, the whole school had a fantastically-fun Maths Day. We took part in five different activities over the course of the day; 3D Frenzy, IQ Heaven, WW1 Code Breaking, Mind Missions and Magimixers (my personal favourite). Every form participated in every activity, with winners of different tasks being announced in the final Chapel of the term. The Happy Puzzle Com-pany also visited the school and gave us challenges in the Wyatt Hall. We had to balance cargo, make a tangram pattern, fill a grid and fit cargo into some trucks. WW1 Code Breaking was brilliant. Hunting around the Couper Building, we solved codes and learnt techniques used in the First World War.

We would like to say a very big thank you to Mrs Pakenham-Walsh for master-minding this magnificent Maths Day!

AN INTERVIEW WITH …. MRS. COOKE

By Ella J, 6Ho

How long have you worked at Cranleigh? When did you start working at Cranleigh? Six years. I started in July 2008, at the Senior School, as Foundation Secretary to the Foundation Director. I moved to the Prep School Office in September 2010.

What do you think are the best and worst things at Cranleigh? The best is how friendly the atmosphere of the school is and (apologies to the kitchen staff) the worst thing is pea soup!

Who is the most interesting person you have met at the front office or on tours? Once I met an elderly man who had dropped in last Christmas. His family had strong connections to the school and had planted some of the original apple trees in the orchard. He told me many stories and bought all of our Christmas chutney for friends. He came back last week looking for more!

What is your daily routine? Firstly, I check emails, ‘phone messages and then speak to parents, before checking the register with Mr Howard and check-ing the NTC list. Then, I update the screens with notices, menus and events. After that, every day is different, but I meet visitors, update the website, deal with finances and much more!

Around how many times a day do children forget something? About six to eight times a day!

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened? I came into school one day and found Osama Bin Laden hugging Justin Bieber! Of course, it was just the dummies that the boarders had made to throw on their bonfire.

Who is always late or the most forgetful child in this school? I shall not name names but, they know who they are!

Do you enjoy your job? Yes. I never know what is going to happen next!

What have been your previous jobs? Prior to working here, I was the Cranleigh Village Co-ordinator, working with community and government organisations, but also helping to organise Christmas lights. I have also worked as a Business Analyst at JP Morgan and other roles in Investment Banking and Finance.

Welcome to the new staff

Farewell to our gaps

This year we welcomed three new members of staff; Mr Poeti, Mr Green and Miss Turner.

Mr Poeti came from St Peters Catholic School in Guildford. Mr Poeti said his favourite thing at Cranleigh has been the friendly staff and stu-dents. He is teaching Compu-ting and Maths in the Middle and Upper School.

Mr Green is our new School Chaplain. He was previously a Vicar in Eastbourne and he also taught at Eastbourne College. He is currently en-joying ‘everything’ about Cranleigh and is Head of the Religious Studies Depart-

ment as well as being our Chaplain.

Miss Turner is working here as a Teaching Assistant in the Art, Eng-lish and Maths Departments. She was previously assisting classes in a primary school near Horsham. We welcome them to our school!

Sadly, it is time to say goodbye to this year’s ‘Gap’ students, who will be moving on back to their countries to go to university. Sophie, Libby, Keenan and Matt will be missed by everyone. It’s been an unforgettable year; we will miss you all and we wish you well in your future studies.

The New EDITORIAL TEAM By Hebe B, 6S and Ella J, 6Ho

The editorial team was picked at the start of the Summer Term by Mrs Johnston. There are 8 pupils involved with The Buzz and they write articles about what goes on in the school, interview teachers, review the sport, discuss school trips and lots more.

The team meet every Tuesday during long break to write a variety of articles. The Buzz is organised by Mrs Johnston, with help from Mrs Schutte.

We are developing our journalistic skills, as well as getting more familiar with Publisher software, as we have to send the completed copy of the paper to the printer. Deadlines are always tight and we are very busy at the end of term!

We hope that you enjoy the editions of The Buzz that we edit this year. We always welcome your contributions.

Come and speak to us if you are interested in being a member of The Buzz team next year.

Last term, were told that the old prefect system was being changed. We were asked to choose an area of the school which we wanted to make a contribu-tion to. We had to think how we could make a difference and what we could do to build our community.

Our choices were the Library Team, the Lower and Middle School Team, the Break Time team, the Charity Team, the Boarding Team, the Creative Arts Team, the Eco Team, the ICT team and the Chapel Team.

It was explained that each week a new

helped to deliver Harvest Hampers to Rowley’s Day Care Centre in Cranleigh.

The Head Boy and Head Girl are not a part of any particular team, but instead help with any team that needs them.

We are working on a system where pupils can gain Prefect status when they have succeeded in completing some Bronze, Silver and Gold challenges and met necessary requirements. This means that we will be awarding Prefect status to pupils who have been excellent team members and upstanding members of the community.

Team Leader would manage each team of pupils. Every member, however, would be expected to give 100% effort and play their part in their team.

Some examples of the things that the teams are doing at the moment are: the Library Team organising a reading time for Forms One and Two in break times; the Break Time Team help to organise games and play with Lower School Pupils; the Chapel Team have

BoarderS’ events this

term

The Boarders have been involved in a number of fun events this term. On Friday 19th of September, the boarders were lucky enough to have a Foam Party! Everyone had so much fun dancing around in the puffy white clouds of foam; even Mr Carne got in! Everyone was running around, trying to knock over Matron, the Gaps and each other! No one stopped laughing until we ate the yummy barbecue food and drank a Tango or two — only to start dancing again!

On Hallowe’en the boarders were involved in apple bobbing, eating a doughnut with a hand behind your back and “German Spotlight” on top pitch. This is a game played in the dark, with the aim of reaching the middle of the field, without being caught in the spotlight.

This term, the Boarders also had a Tea Party, for which we spent all week making delicious chocolate cakes and cookies! The parents came and praised our great baking skills; everyone had a great time.

Last, but certainly not least, was Bonfire Night, with fireworks. We sat by the fire in the Bushcraft Hut, eating hot dogs, tomato soup, candy floss and smores! Afterwards, we watched the fabulous fireworks, kindly do-nated by the Going and Critchley families. The display, which was really impressive, just kept going on and on thanks to Mr Critchley’s expert co-ordination of the display.

Finally, the boarders would like to thank Mr & Mrs Manning, Mr & Mrs Batchelor and all of the staff who help out with boarding and arrange these fabulous events! Boarding would not be the same without you!

Form 1 are supporting Surrey Young Carers, a charity which has been supporting young carers under the age of 18, to help them achieve their best at school and to help them find new interests.

Form 2’s charity is Born Free, which is an international wildlife charity working throughout the world to stop individual wild animal suffering and protect threatened species in the wild.

Form 3 are supporting Beyond Ourselves which is partnering with three schools Zambia to help bring education, nutrition and basic medical care to the orphans and vulnerable children.

Sports Aid is Form 4’s charity, which supports future sports stars during the early years of their careers.

Form 5’s charity is Future Hope, which is an amazing school for street children in India. This charity enables children who were either born into extreme poverty, orphaned or escaped difficult situations at home, to have a better life where they can be safe and are able to go to school.

Finally, Form 6 are supporting the a charity close to the heart of our community: Finlay’s Fighters. This charity aims to raise money to support research into children’s brain cancer, whilst helping families touched by this illness. This remarkable charity was set up, just last year, by Finlay’s’ parents, Jude and Chris Marriott.

As part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival at Leatherhead Theatre, members of Form 3 and 6 were delighted to per-form two amazing Shakespeare plays: Romeo and Juliet and Comedy of Errors. Thirty Form 3 pupils were involved in the production of Romeo and Juliet, including William M who was Romeo and Maddie F, who played Juliet. Form 6’s production was the Comedy of Errors, which included Charles H and Toby E as the two Antipholous twins, Hen-ry M and Toby R as the two Dromio twins, Amelie Lambie-Proctor as Andriana and Bella Hazell as Luciana.

There was much hard work that went on behind the scenes, to enable both plays to be so successful. Not only were there after school rehearsals, children also practised on some Sundays. On the day of the performance, both casts were at school for 8am, leaving for Leatherhead at 1pm and then working hard all afternoon during the technical and dress rehearsals. How exciting it was to be wearing the full clothes and makeup (enabled amazingly by Mrs Everett)!

Mr Waller and Mr Hitchen were fantastic in supporting all of the children to do their best and produce amazing plays. It was such a memorable experience for all con-cerned: parents, pupils and teachers. When asked to describe the event, Richard (3ZB) explained, “My emo-tions ranged from being scared to massive enjoyment!” and Sonny (3ZB) added, “There was such a sense of team-work that we pulled it off!” Many children suggested that such a performance was beyond what they though they could do, but they had faith in their teachers who “instructed us precisely so that we wouldn’t go wrong!” Overall, it was a very special evening for all concerned.

On the evening November 25th, Forms 1- 3, and mem-bers of Forms 4,5 and 6 who are involved in extra musi-cal groups, gathered in the Wyatt Hall to perform pieces that they have been learning for the past term, for proud parents, inspirational teachers and the boarders.

The concert consisted of performances by the Concert Band, Chapel Choir, Chamber Choir, Training Choir, Training Band, combined choirs of Forms 1- 3, Flute Trio, String Orchestra and Cello Quartet. They played well-practised, perfected pieces of music that were enjoyed by the impressed audience and, according to Mrs Beddison, “left everyone buzzing.”

We visited Hampton Court Palace on Friday 26th September. It was an amazing trip, especially because we were greeted by Henry VIII’s beasts. There were ten of them on the first bridge.

The first thing I saw when I entered the palace was the Base Court where there were loads of chimneys. Hampton Court Palace has around one thousand rooms!

One of my favourite places was the real tennis court because you can hit the ball onto the wall and get it to the other side. Another great thing about Hampton Court was the kitchen, because was there was a real fire in the fireplace. In the kitchen, their plates were enormous and there was loads of food.

We went to the Great Hall where we took part in a workshop. In the Great Hall, there were little people staring at you. Also, there were huge tapestries which would have cost a lot of money. As we walked into Anne Boleyn’s Gateway, which is at the entrance of Hampton Court Palace, if you looked up, there were patterns including an ‘AH,’ which stands for Anne and Henry. My favourite place was probably the Chapel because that was where we saw a crown.

On the 14th November, Fourth Formers Edward T and Naal-ini Band Third Formers, Phoebe F and Scott W, represented Cranleigh in the Quiz Club Inter-School Science Quiz which was held at Danes Hill School.

Half-way through, Cranleigh had a solid 4th position.

However, determined to get a ‘medal’ position, we pushed

to get 2nd in the last round. It was only on the penultimate

question, that the host’s 2nd team pushed Cranleigh into

joint 3rd place, with St Catherine’s School. It was a very

enjoyable morning and we want to thank Miss Gibson for

organising this trip for us.

Bursting fireworks blaze through the air and zooming as fast as a shooting star,

Owls hooting in the city lights as the dazzling fire-works light up the sky like a crystal fountain,

Nightly sounds crackling through the jet-black sky as if it was some exploding ribbons,

Flashing rockets twirling through the buildings like a multi-coloured viper as they whistled in the wind,

Inky pitch black sky with stars flickering like spar-klers spinning through the glittering sky,

Rushing like an ostrich and scorching through the smouldering ruins in a circle of flames! Energy powered missiles exploding like a molten

volcano and spinning, spiralling magically.

In the Summer, the Eco Committee launched a “Design the Compost Bin” competition. Jasmine G and Henry R were delighted to be the winners of the competition and they had their designs painted onto two large com-post bins. We were all so pleased to find out that Mr McNiven had kindly painted these beautiful designs, in his spare time over the Summer holidays. Both of these bins have now been placed in the Form 2 Garden, ready for use by the whole school. Thank you Mr NcNiven!

At Cranleigh Prep School, we encourage everybody to compost banana skin, apple cores, pear cores, orange peel and even the skins of an onion. The committee have now put small compost bins in the dining hall for everyone to use, so please don’t ‘chuck’ fruit cores and orange peel in the bin any more — compost them!

From the Captain’s viewpoint:

Football and Hockey this term

BOYS FOOTBALL

Harvey S, Captain of Football, was interviewed about his time when leading the 1st XI Football team in the first half of the Michaelmas term. Harvey led a very successful team, winning many matches and tournaments. A selected few were chosen to play in the 7 a-side tournament at Charterhouse. The team ended up winning this for the first time in recent history. Harvey seemed to be very happy with how the season had been and described it as ‘very good.’ Harvey said that his team improved most on ‘communication and team work.’ Harvey then went on to discuss how he played out of school for Cranleigh Football Club and that he really enjoyed it. Overall Harvey said that his team had done very well and he was pleased to be Captain when they won the tournament.

Girls Hockey

Rosie H was selected to be the 13A Hockey Captain for the girls. Phoebe T was appointed Vice-Captain. Both Phoebe and Rosie led the team to a great title of IAPS National Champions for 13A Girls Hockey! Being Nation-al Champions was not easy to accomplish as they had a two very hard and intensive days at Queenwood School in Hertfordshire. Rosie Hope plays for Guildford Hockey Club outside of school in the U14A team. Rosie was also selected for Surrey Hockey last year and she is still waiting to find out if she has been selected this year.

Rosie lead her team through many victories but one defeat which especially angered the team was the match against Danes Hill. The 13A girls knew Danes Hill would be a challenge and fought well but the final score was 3-5. At this match Phoebe T was hit in the eye in the 2nd minute and went to hospital for some stitches. Many other inju-ries occurred this season; Ella J (goalie) broke her wrist and Rosie H wrenched her collar bone and sprained her wrist. All the team were awarded colours for an excellent season!

Cranleigh Prep School also had some very other successful sporting achievements this term:

Lulu F and Olivia R have been selected to be in the Surrey Net-ball Squad.

Francesca S is selected for Sussex Girls for Cricket.

Bronte M did very well in the Cherif National Riding Champi-onships, as did all the Prep School Riding team.

Joshua M rode very well again this term and won the Prelim class at Quinton Stud in Buckinghamshire.

The Junior riders are South East Grassroots Regional Champions.

Joshua M & Lila M performed very well in the ‘Jumping with Style’ & Dressage at the National Champion-ships.

A large group of footballers have been selected for the South Central and Development sides. Ethan S (U13) , Sam T, Luca La C, Jacob H and Hugo W (U12) and Finn T(U11) are in the

South Central teams for their respective age groups. Harvey S, George E (U13) and William W(U12) have all been selected for the Development teams.

We achieved record results at the Cranleigh Village Amateur Swimming Gala. Our Swim Squad is also unbeaten so far.

The Girls U13A Hockey team were IAPS South Regional Champions and also gained the National Champions title. They

also won the Westbourne House U13 Hockey Tournament.

CPS girls and boys did very well in the Ardingly Cross Coun-try team event.

U12A Girls Hockey Team finished 3rd in their group at IAPS.
