Richard Thomas Cooper was born on November 24, 1930, Columbus, Ohio. Graduated from local schools in
Columbus and promptly went to work for Pennsylvania Railroad.
Married Norma Mae Browning in 1950 and has two daughters, Mary Christine and Cheryl Coleen.
Served in the U.S. Army, 1952-1953, spent time in Korea during the Korean Conflict and was Honorably
Discharged with the rank of Corporal.
Upon returning to civilian life started working in the construction trade and moved from Ohio to Los Angeles
in 1961. Operated a construction company for 25 years and is presently employed by the City of Los
Angeles, Department of Building and Safety.

New Year Welcome Companions,
Welcome to the New Year. I hope that this holiday season has brought you joy and warmth, and that the coming year brings you happiness, health, and prosperity.
This past year has been one of change. It has been one of turmoil for some, and new successes for others. It has been a year of division and tumult. In many ways, it appears that our nation is more divided than it has been in over a century. You may have found yourself in sharp opposition to your brothers and Companions on a number of issues.
Companions, I ask you to remember that Masonry has room for all beliefs and all opinions. I have, unfortunately, seen too many instances this past year, on social media and in person, where one Companion has made disparaging remarks, and even worse, about those whose opinions differ from theirs. They have made generalized statements about large swaths of our population – which include their brothers and Companions. I believe that this type of behavior is beneath us as Masons. I ask that whatever the situation, you remember your many obligations throughout your Masonic life. Remember the lessons we are taught, that Masonry unites men of every country, sect, and opinion. This does not mean that you should relinquish your own opinions or passions, but that you respect the opinions of others, and not let a difference separate you from your brothers. And never suffer your passions or your prejudices to the masters of your judgement.
I am looking forward to a fresh new Capitular year, with new officers taking the reins of our Chapters, and new Companions being exalted. I hope each of you will remember to let your light shine throughout the Masonic community, and let your brothers know that York Rite Masonry is a path worth taking. I hope that each of you will, by your conduct, show the world that the lessons taught in our degrees have made you a better Mason. I hope that each of you will show the members of your Chapter that there is something worthwhile in our activities, and that they should attend our meetings and functions.
Throughout the coming month, I will be attending a number of Chapter installations, and am looking forward to seeing so many of you. Micki and I always enjoy spending time with the Companions and their ladies, and it is truly a treat for us that we have many opportunities in January to be with you.

“Work for the Cause, not the Applause” Happy New Year, Sir Knights!
It is hard to believe that we are already in 2018. I am sure that many of you have made some New Year’s resolutions but I would like to ask everyone to make another resolution that is easy to keep and will remind
you all year that we are Modern Knights Templar who still observe the ancient Templar orders. The
resolution I suggest is “Work for the Cause, not the Applause” which I hope you recognize as my motto for
the year.
Last month was the month that annual election of officers took place and this month is when most Commanderies will be installing their new officers. I am scheduled to participate in many of these
installations and I look forward to assisting these Commanderies in getting started for the New Year. Let’s all
get behind the new officers and make our York Rite bodies grow and flourish this year. Here are some of the
ways we can help: we can offer a ride to a Sir Knight who has not been to a meeting for a while; we can talk to
the brethren in our Blue Lodges about the York Rite; and we can offer to take a small part, at least, in the
degrees and orders of the York Rite. Together we can make the York Rite grow.
I want to remind you that the Grand Commandery has a Meritorious Service Award that, with a vote of a
Commandery, can be awarded to a Sir Knight who has served the Commandery above and beyond the call of
duty, and who should be recognized for his tireless work in the Commandery. Many Commanderies have
such a Knight in their membership, whose work and service are generally accepted as something that he just
does and is deserving of this prestigious award.
In November, we lost another Past Grand Commander, Richard Cooper, who served as Grand Commander in
1993. There was never a question of Richard’s dedication to Commandery and how deeply he cared for
Commandery and all who were involved.
Richard will be greatly missed but we know that he will continue to watch over all of us.

Lifetime Achievement Award The Grand York Rite Bodies of California (Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons, Grand Council Cryptic Masons, Grand Commandery Knights Templar) selected Sir Knight Donaldo E Robinson Sr, KYGCH, Past Grand
Commander, to receive the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. The Lifetime Achievement Award is
usually presented at the Grand York Rite Grand Sessions but due to hospitalization of Sir Knight Robinson
Sr. KYGCH the presentation was delayed until November 20, 2017.
Sir Knight Kussman arranged the presentation of this prestigious award to Sir Knight Robinson during Los
Angeles Commandery No. 9 Stated conclave.

Activities around the State
Greetings,
On behalf of our Scottish Rite Valley of Oakland, and our Sovereign Grand Inspector General Frank Loui, we
wanted to ensure the below dates were known by CA Grand Lodge and York Rite Bodies in order to avoid
scheduling event conflicts on the same days.
For the first time in recent history, the California Scottish Rite will host an Orient-wide Reunion in
2018, at the Oakland Scottish Rite Center, on June 29th, 30th, and July 1st. All 29 Scottish Rite degrees
will be exemplified over three days at the Oakland Scottish Rite. Scottish Rite Valleys from around the state
will each present their own degree, and candidates will be driving and flying in from throughout the state.
It is our hope we can avoid scheduling conflicting events in the East Bay, and throughout the State, if at all
possible, so our Brethren active in many areas of our fraternity may still enjoy this historic occasion in
Oakland. If you have any questions please send them my way.

Scottish Rite Valley of Oakland
BASCO will be January 26-28 at the Crowne Plaza, 5321 Date Street, Sacramento. It is located off Madison
and 80 behind Future Ford. Although the hotel room rate is up a few dollars the overall cost per couple or
individual has been dropped quite a bit.
We are again opening this up to all Nobles and Ladies of Ben Ali Shrine. The format will be similar to what
we used in 2016 and 2017. It will include separate Noble and Ladies tracks.
The Nobles track will include a series of 12 one-hour seminars/3 per hour so you choose the subjects of most
interest to you. The seminars will be presented by the Divan, greater Sacramento Nobles and Nobles from the
far reaches of our jurisdiction.
The final three seminars will be fun seminars on non-Shrine subjects that will highlight the talents of some of
our Ben Ali Nobles.
The Ladies track will include information sessions re the hospital, Ben Ali Shrine, First Ladies project and
Shrine social media. The ladies will also get a shopping experience and a special Ladies luncheon with first
class entertainment.

Dear Fellow Nobles,
As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving in the US, we want to express our gratitude for everyone who is part
of our extended, international family. We appreciate each of you – our families, fellow nobles and their families, staff members, volunteers, donors and participants in our signature events. You are the reason we
are able to improve the lives of children and families around the globe.
While this single day is set aside as our nation’s official, annual day of Thanksgiving, being grateful and
appreciative is an attitude appropriate for every day. We have so much to be thankful for.
Every day, for more than 140 years, our fraternity has offered us brotherhood, friendship, camaraderie and opportunities to serve others. The work of our fraternity is both worthy and wonderful, and helps make the
world a better, kinder and happier place.
And, every day, for 95 years, our philanthropy, Shriners Hospitals for Children® has provided hope, healing,
compassion and quality care to children. We want to thank the staff of our 22 health care locations and
headquarters, and all of our volunteers for their dedication and commitment to our mission. Working
together, the difference we make in the lives of children and families is truly stunning. In addition to improving their physical conditions, we help those in our care discover that, no matter what challenges and
difficulties they may face, anything is possible. They can paint pictures, even if they have no hands; they can
run, even without legs. They can participate, have opportunities and full lives. Put simply, we give the
children hope, and some say that hope is everything.
We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the fraternity’s leaders and members who established our philanthropy for their vision. Their dream has become recognized worldwide as a leader in pediatric specialty
care, research and medical research.
We can all be proud of the accomplishments and reputations of both Shriners International and Shriners
Hospitals for Children, and we thank you for all you continue to do to strengthen and improve our
organizations.

The Knights of Prince Hall assisted California Commandery No. 1 in its January 2018 installation. This is a
priceless picture of Knights Templar. We, Grand Commandery Knights Templar of California and Pacific
Prince Hall Grand Commandery, Order of the Knights Templar for the State of California should always assist
each other and go out of our way to greet each other.

Once chosen, the award of $1,000 is renewable for a total of 5 years, as long as the requirements are

Companion Adept of the Temple The York Rite Sovereign College has developed a self-study educational program, similar in concept to the Scottish Rite’s Master Craftsman Program, for the York Rite bodies. It is available to any York Rite Mason by
enrollment through the Sovereign College Office. Cost is only $30. Eight resources are made available,
seven of them at no cost. Most Excellent Companion Phil Hardiman, KYGCH Past Grand High Priest
purchased the other from Amazon for $1.99! These resources include books by Mackey, Thomas Smith

Golden State Research Chapter Companions,
I hope when you receive this message, you are in good spirits and in good health. I first want to thank all of the companions who attended the Golden State Research Chapter’s semi-annual meeting held at Grand Lodge
in the California room Saturday October 14. We were able to conduct business, accept several applications
for affiliation and we were also presented with a paper presented by Most Excellent Philip Hardiman on a
scientific theory of how manna could have been available for the Israelites while on there 40 years journey in
the wilderness.
Other business items discussed at the meeting were:
The Golden State Chapter web site moved hosting facilities, http://www.goldenstatechapter.org ,
The New Golden State Research Publication which include Orations and services for 2015, 2016, and
2017 is now available at a cost of $20.
MEC Phil now as our Treasurer, that the financial account for GSRC will be moved to an institution in
the Sacramento area.
I’m excited about the publication of this year’s booklet. It is an excellent source of educational material that Dais Officers of each Chapter can share at their convocations. Also, now is the right time to join the
Research Chapter, as I know our esteemed Secretary is going to propose we raise the fee to $20 from $10.
I also want to acknowledge the hard work and commitment to the craft that MEC(Honorary) Ken Hope who is
officially retired at the end of October 2017. He has served the Grand Chapter and many bodies in the
California York Rite which include service for the Golden State Research Chapter for so many years. Thank
you Ken from all the members of GSRC.

In closing, please keep a prayer in your heart for all the people affected by the recent fire storm in Sonoma and Napa County. Especially, the members, family and friends of the four Royal Arch chapters in the affected

Leadership & Communication A publication is meant to be a communication entity, selling your product, whether it is selling what you love
to accomplish or selling a physical device – you must communicate.
❖ Grand Chapter communicates with its members through the “Workman”; ❖ Grand Council uses the “Sword and Trowel”; ❖ Grand Commandery communicates to its members using web site Grand Encampment of
Knights Templar and upon finding your way to States supplements you find California ❖ Grand York Rite communicates to all members through Encompasser; and ❖ Our Web Site - Grand York Rite of California has a “Locations” Page linking to separate pages
of Local York Rite Bodies. Individual pages have a place for “Bulletins”; very few local York Rite Bodies utilize this feature.
In our Publications including Proceedings, we see discussions about Ritual, Programs, and Activities and this
discussion falls upon deaf ears and is not a localized issue, it is prevalent in York Rite. Reading from Ritual Books is prevalent; reading from the last ten years of proceedings, we listen to ritual directors’ report after
report, if you cannot open and close from memory, you should lose your charter. And if we read from ritual
books how many Companions whom have sat as High Priest, Illustrious Master, and Eminent Commander,
have obtained higher seats?
Reading from a report issued in 2003 by the Grand Commander “It is my feeling that there is room for improvement in each of the fifty Commanderies, although some problems are small, and others large. The officers and members of each Commandery need to know that the Grand Commandery Officers, and the Ritual Staff, are there to help them, and not hinder their efforts.”
Please read the paragraph again, fifty (50) Commanderies in 2003 and currently we have thirty-six (36)
Commanderies in 2017.
Reading from a current Proceedings issue: Much as in past years, the following factors are affecting the quality of ritual and tactics, statewide:
1. Declining membership and participation. 2. Commanderies holding only four or six meetings per year, with no additional practice time. 3. Too many Sir Knights hold multiple roles in Masonic organizations, especially across York Rite Bodies. 4. Many members of the Ritual Staff also hold multiple positions – many are on ritual staff for two or three of
the York Rite Bodies, some are Grand Lodge Inspectors as well, and have not found the time to devote to teaching our ritual and tactics.
5. Many existing members are apathetic regarding the need for tactics and memory work to be done well, and about showing up for stated conclaves – even when they are officers in their Commandery.
State of our Ritual and Tactics: Sir Knights, based upon the results of the recent Commandery Inspections, I must report, sadly, that we appear in significant trouble as a Grand Commandery, regarding our ritual and tactics. While many Commanderies did well in inspection, too many did very poorly, and several were not even able to meet for inspection. At least one Commandery actually did its inspection with all of the officers reading their parts.
We must establish a Communications Bar, Ritual Bar, Program Bar, York Rite Bar, or whatever we want or
desire to call a “Bar”, establish its contents, and then lift it off of the ground:
• Ritual,
• Programs to help the community in which we live, and
• Activities, whether it be a marching unit, a luncheon once a quarter, dinner once a quarter, a wine and chocolate party or ?
Someone, anyone, all of us together, let’s create a new path, one that we can all walk; elevating York Rite to
the position it should be, in our minds, in our community, and most importantly, in our hearts.

your bodies and to your membership;
