THE CAMERON PARISH Courthouse is 64 years old and still is in full use by parish offices(although some have had to move into other buildings due to a need for more space.) It was oneof 12 new courthouses built in Louisiana from 1937 to 1940 as WPA projects. The plaques in theforeground list Cameron Parish residents who served during war time and in front of the court-house is a monument to the parish’s war dead.

An exhibit of nature pho-tographs by Charles W. Anconaof New Iberia is now on displayat the Cameron Parish Libraryand will be part of the NationalLibrary Week and the Library’sopen house Thursday, April 5from 2 to 4 p.m.

Ancona, vice president ofHealth and Life department ofthe ICT Group, bought his firstcamera when he joined the Navyat the young age of 17 and hascarried it with him ever since.

An avid sportsman, “Whenyou see me I’ve got it all,” saidAncona. “I like to hunt and fish alot, so when I bring my fishingrod or shotgun, I always bringalong my camera.”

Although his lifelong dreamis to have his photographs inNational Geographic magazine,Ancona never entered a contestuntil a woman made a commentto him about some family photos.The lady persuaded Ancona toenter his picture of a sunset overthe marsh after telling him ofher recent backpacking expedi-tion in the mountains and thathe was not too old to follow hisdreams.

That picture of the sunsetwas the winning entry in theLouisiana Wildlife and Fisheriesmagazine photo contest for itsMay/June issue of “LouisianaConservationist.” Ancona wonthat contest as well as theJuly/August one.

“There is a story with everypicture,” claimed Ancona. Hedescribed how he was outsideand saw a green male anolelizard and how he was told, “ifyou stand about three feet fromthem and go ‘click, click, click’while you move your finger, themales become defensive andshow their red throat fan, or‘money bag’ as the Cajuns call it.As a kid I was told that therewas a dime in there.”

Ancona uses “very inexpen-sive” magnifying filters on hisCanon camera to “fill the frameand paint with the photos.” Hesaid that he is constantly con-scious of where the sun is and

what is in the background of theshot, but keeps sight of the pic-ture’s focus, which is the animal.

Even though his thirst forpictures has taken him toRockefeller Refuge and CameronPrairie Refuge, which he calls“the prettiest place on earth” andthe Smokey Mountains, to namea few, Ancona encourages, “A lotcan be done in your backyard. Ilive in it and I love it.” Hesearched all over Louisiana forsix months to find a tiger swal-lowtail butterfly to add to hisphotograph collection. Charlesfinally found the elusive butter-fly as a deadline neared...in hisneighbor’s yard.

Ancona said that he plans tochase his dream with theNational Geographic magazineand in about two years, when heis 62, do more traveling, of coursewith his camera.

Horn also announced thatthe parish has received a$23,000 state grant to build atimber walkway from the RVpark to the beach.

The Cameron jetties fishingpier, which has been open forabout a year, will start charginga $2 fee per person to fish begin-ning Sunday, April 1, accordingto Tina Horn, Cameron parishadministrator.

The pier was built by thePolice Jury with the aid of stategrants. It is located on the eastside of the ship channel at theend of the Jetty road atCameron.

Hub Enterprises, a securityservice, will have personnel onduty to collect fishing fees. TheRV park at the site also is openand owners of RV vehicles whowish to hook up to electricitywill be charged $10 per day,

Mrs. Hebert is one of sevenchildren born of Fielder and IdaJenner-Helms. Her siblingsincluded: Walter Helms, HermanH. Helms, Teitum Helms-Viedt,Lafayette Helms, and Lee K.Helms. (all deceased).

She also has out-lived all ofher four children: Malcolm G.Hebert, Dorothy Hebert, HerbertW. Hebert and Donald E. Hebert.

(Preservation In Print)Franklin Roosevelt’s New

Deal created the Public WorksAdministration (PWA) and theWorks Progress Administration(WPA) in the midst of the GreatDepression. A cooperative effortbetween federal and local gov-ernments, these two massivepublic building projects put peo-ple to work, jump-started theeconomy, and gave us schools,sewerage systems, hospitals,bridges, roads, and universitybuildings.

Between December of 1937and July of 1940, the PWA erect-ed twelve new courthouses,added six additions or annexesto existing structures, and soextensively rebuilt another thatit might well be considered anew building. The WPA wasresponsible for two more court-houses.

The PWA put new court-house-jails in Caldwell, Cam-eron, East Carroll, Iberia,Jackson, Natchitoches, Rapides,St. Bernard, St. Landry, andTerrebonne parishes.

They also overhauled theMadison parish courthouse andadded its jail. They added jails in

Caddo and St. John the Baptistparishes and additions or annex-es to Morehouse, Pt. Coupee, St.James, and Tangipahoa parishcourthouses. The WPA builtcourthouses in Concordia and St.Helena parishes.

All the courthouses and mostof the additions are still stand-ing, and all but Concordia arestill their parish’s primary courtbuilding.

Most of these buildings havea distinctive style, known vari-ously as “stripped-down classi-cism,” “starved classicism,” “PWAModerne,” or “Greco-Deco.” Asthe terms collectively imply, asimplified version of Greco-Roman classicism is combinedwith features of the then-fash-ionable Art Deco. The basic ele-ments of the Greek temple, base,column, and entablature, stilldominate, but the window treat-ments, lighting, and details likedoors and handrails show theDeco influence.

This style was not imposedfrom Washington. PWA projectswere initiated and designedlocally. The term “PWA Moderne”came about because that agencymade possible the vast majorityof public building during thisperiod and because the starvedclassicism or Greco-Deco stylewas favored by most architectsacross the country at the sametime.

In addition to their hand-some appearance, these court-houses are also well built. Thefact that they are all still stand-ing sixty years later and almostall of them still serving theiroriginal purposes is testimony totheir sturdiness. Another bit ofevidence is the fact thatCameron Parish‘s courthousewas one of the few buildings intown to stand up to HurricaneAudrey in 1957.

Drivers Lic.closing tobe opposed

The Cameron Parish PoliceJury is expected to adopt a reso-lution Monday opposing the pro-posed closing of the CameronDriver’s License office. The officeis due to be closed soon as aneconomy measure by the state.

The jury also will approveadvertising for bids on a newbookmobile for the CameronParish Library and bids on atimber walkway from the JettyPier park to the Gulf.

Amends to the parish ambu-lance ordinance and the dogordinance will be considered.

Other items on the monthlyjury meeting set for 5 p.m.Monday are a cable TV franchiseextension, a recycling plan, and aproposal to abandon a portion ofBourg Point road.

Delinquenttax list ispublished

Published elsewhere in thisissue is a list of over 100 pieces ofproperty in Cameron Parish onwhich the 2000 taxes have notbeen paid. Certified notices hadbeen previously mailed to theowners of each property.

If the taxes, plus interest andadvertising cost, are not paidthese properties will be sold bythe Cameron Parish Sheriff ’sDept. at 11 a.m. on Wednesday,May 2 at the front door of thecourthouse.

The sales will be for cash andthe immovable property sold willbe redeemable at any time forthe space of three years by pay-ing the taxes, including costs andfive per cent penalty thereon andinterest a the rate of one per centper month until paid.

Jobless ratedown a little

The unemployment rate inCameron Parish for Februarywas 8.2 percent, down slightlyfrom 8.6 percent in January, butstill higher than the 7.6 rate forJanuary a year ago.

according to the La. Dept. ofLabor there were 320 personsunemployed in February out of awork force of 3,550 in theparish.

The jobless rate forLouisiana in February was 5.6percent, the same as for Januaryand a little higher than the 5.3percent a year ago.

“B. J.” Howerton, 73, of Hamlin,Texas, were held Saturday,March 17, at Holy TrinityCatholic Church.

The Revs. Michael Melcher,John Cherolikal and JohnroseHayden officiated. Burial was inHamlin Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Howerton died Thursday,March 15, 2001, in a local hospi-tal.

A native of Aurora, Mo. Hewas a graduate of Ville PlatteHigh School. He retired fromConoco in 1989 after 42 years ofservice. He was a scout masterand a Little League coach. Hewas a member of the HamlinEconomic Development Board.

Dear Editor:With all the talk about the

closing of the Grand ChenierSchool I began to think aboutmy days as a student at GrandChenier School.

I graduated from GrandChenier School in 1955. Therewere 5 students in my graduat-ing class that year. About 3years ahead of my class therewas a class that only had 3 stu-dents that graduated.

When I was in elementaryschool we stayed in the sameclass room for two years, underthe same four teachers. In otherwords each teacher taught twoclasses in her room each day,first and second grades and soon.

I’ve been told that back thenthere was a lack of money tokeep the schools going. In fact Iwas told by one of my old teach-ers that at times the superinten-dent and the board membersdidn’t bring home a check eachmonth. But they never decidedto just quit and give up. Theyfought it out and found a way tokeep the school open. They knewof its importance.

Now here in 2001 we are toldthat money is not their reasonfor closing the school its enroll-ment. Well all I can say to that isif Mr. Tom McCall and Mr. U. E.Hackett could keep our schoolopen with lack of money andstudents why are we closingGrand Chenier school now?Why, Why, Why?

The La. Department ofWildlife & Fisheries at thehunting season meeting atBurton Coliseum last weekwent well. Under considerationis to have all the coastal parish-es have their duck seasons atthe same time. This is to helpout the Southeast Parishes tohave about a two week advanceon duck hunting. When thestrong north winds begin toblow, where hunters have nowater to get to their blinds, asthey hunt in tidal marshes, andthe strong north winds pushestheir water out into the Gulf ofMexico.

Also in consideration is tocombine Area 2 and Area 3 deerhunting. In Area 2 there are 14parishes involved and in Area 3there are 9 parishes involvedand other boundaries in bothareas. They also brought upabout adding 6 extra days ofeither sex (doe day) into Area 3.We alreadyhad 12 either sex days, thiswould make it 18 either sexdays.

The duck hunting would notaffect Southwest Louisiana andI don’t see where combiningArea 2 and Area 3 togetherwould affect our deer hunting.Cameron Parish is in Area 3.The only thing I see is we herein Area 3 would have more doedays.

FISHING REPORTSArea saltwater fishing is up

& down. Good catches of largeredfish up to 20 pounds, and bigdrums up to 40 pounds arebeing caught at the CameronJetties. Cracked crab, cut mul-lets and shrimp are the hotbaits.

I understand some anglersare cleaning their fish as theycatch them, remember you haveto leave the fish whole, heads onand body attached, and limitsonly. It’s o.k. to gut your fish orscale your fish, but leave every-thing else attached.

The Calcasieu Lake & BigLake area is slowed because ofall the freshwater from therecent heavy rain. Rockerfelleris still producing Red fish, butslowed also.

Area freshwater fishing hashad its downside, Old ManWinter doesn’t seem to want tolet go, although spring is here.

Many anglers are makingtrips with no fish or maybe twoor three. You can tell it’s toughas you see the results of theLemesche Bass ClubTournaments.

LEMESCHE BASSCLUB NEWS

The Lemesche Bass Clubhad a dogfight two weeks ago onRockerfeller Refuge. Bass teamstringers (5 bass) and thelargest redfish. Tough fishingbut Corey Broussard and DerickVaughan did catch 5 bass totake first place. Tom andBrandon Hess took second with5 bass and Darren and BarryRichard took third with 2 bass.The big winners was Rufus

McEvers with the largest red-fish.

The Club held their firsttournament of the year lastSunday. Yes a cold front camethrough, cold and strong northwinds and a high pressure over-head. The results weren’t toogreat.

Eight record book workshopswere held at Hackberry for 4-H’ers entering the 4-H recordbook competition. Those attend-ing the workshops and complet-ing record books were: NatashaHicks, Kayla Backlund, LoribethShove, Brittany Thomas,Samantha Miller, Darra East,Kelsey Helmer, Drew East, andamanda Kelly.

District 25 State SenatorJerry Theunissen is the “2001Public Official of the Year.” TheLake Charles Program Unit ofthe Louisiana State Chapter ofthe National Association ofSocial Workers recently present-ed Senator Theunissen with thespecial award during a specialmeeting in Lake Charles cele-brating Profession Social WorkMonth.

The area social workers hon-ored Senator Theunissen for thissupport of legislation restructur-ing the Louisiana Social WorkLicensure Law. They also praisedhis long-standing support andleadership in connection withlegislation improving the healthand welfare of Louisiana citi-zens.

CRD chairman KeatonBoudreaux, talked about theclub cleaning up the flower bedsand planting flowers at theCreole post office on Wednesday,Mar. 21. The members that par-ticipated were Katelyn andKathryn Reina, and SarahBoudreaux. Mrs. SusanBoudreaux furnished all theflowers and supplies needed tofix the flower beds. Mrs. LisaDeculus from the Creole postoffice sent a letter to the clubthanking them for the great jobthey did.

President Chance Richardannounced some new business.The St. Jude bike-a-thon, therecord books, outstanding 4-Hforms, and the large and smallanimal forms are due March 23,.The shooting sport will be heldon Saturday, Mar. 31 at theMosquito Control Barn. It willbegin at 1 p.m. Please bring $5to cover cost of supplies. Thenext shooting will be on May 5.Members should attend at least2 shootings in order to attendthe state contest.

The district cook-off was heldin Lafayette on Wednesday, Mar.21. Blake Payne and KimilyBourriaque attended. Blake

received a blue ribbon in the fishand other seafood division.Kimily received red ribbonswith both egg cookery andprocessed poultry category.

Katelyn and Kathryn Reinagave a talk on the St. Jude bike-a-thon. It will be at the SouthCameron High School on April21, from 9 to 11 a.m. The coordi-nator is Charlene Boudreaux,Kathryn Reina and Cody Jouetthanded out the forms to fill out.She asked everyone to inspectyour bicycles and get themready. The money raised will goto the St. Jude research hospi-tal.

Katelyn also announced thatthe club will be having a cookiecontest the morning of the bike-a-thon.

Kimily Bourriaque gave areport on Cameron Parish. Mr.Mike presented a certificate toKimily for winning the StateDepartment Education awardfor the Outstanding Junior 4-Hmember in Livestock Programat the State Livestock Show.

The new business discussedwas the Limousine summershow. Achievement day inJohnson Bayou on April 28.

Mr. Mike passed out pam-phlets about career paths. Hewent over the papers andexplained to the kids aboutmaking career choices for your-self.

The community has beencollecting money for theAmerican Cancer Societythroughout March. Saturday, theparking lot will be turned into amini track to celebrate the livesof those loved and lost. Have you ever wondered what it would be liketo help people who have been sick or hurt. Well,that's what recreational therapists do. They helppeople who have gotten hurt in an accident or whohave been sick and can't move around much getactive again.

In order to do this, recreational therapists usesports, games, arts and crafts and even music. Allthese things work to build patients' confidence andhelp them on the road to recovery.

Recreational therapists build a program for thepatient by looking at the doctor's chart, talkingto the patient's doctor(s) and other staff, and alsotalking to the patient's family. They also listento what the patient has to say. Then they helpthe patient with stretch exercises and even workwith him/her to reduce stress.

Some recreational therapists are self-employed, butmost of them work in hospitals and nursing homes.Many recreational therapists work in hospitalactivity rooms. Sometimes, they work with apatient in a swimming pool or on a playing field.

Most of the time, therapists work 40 hours a week,but sometimes they are required to work evenings,weekends and holidays.

Hospitals usually require therapists to havea degree. After that, therapists have to passa test to become certified by a national board.
