Congratulations to Erin Naden on being named in the Australian Woomeras team. Since
commencing in 2013, the AFL Indigenous Female Kickstart and Woomeras programs have
quickly become an aspiration point for many young Indigenous women and increased the
transition rates of Indigenous females into the mainstream pathways. The Woomeras team gets
selected from the Female Kickstart Championships which is held in different locations across
Australia. Every year we see 25 young Indigenous females step into the Woomeras program and
compete at the National Female Youth Championships.
The Woomeras are a National Under-18 female Indigenous development program which
immerses participants in an elite training environment with the aim of increasing football,
personal development and leadership skills. The objectives of the Woomeras program are to
excel participants football ability, enhance their leadership potential and explore their cultural
identity.
After captaining NSW in the Australian competition Erin was named in the national side. Part of
her training camp involved attending Nitro Athletics in Melbourne. Erin pictured here with the
fastest man in the world!

From the
Principal’s Desk Dear Parents and Members of our School Community
It has been a busy two weeks since our last newsletter.
50th Anniversary
This year our school will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a number of events already planned.
The main focus of the celebrations will be the weekend of May 20th-21st with a dinner at the
Orange Function Centre and tours of the school and displays of historical documents and
memorabilia. Tickets for the dinner will be available from the school office by the end of next
week.
To ensure you keep up with all the information about the celebrations please look at the 50th
Anniversary Facebook page www.facebook.com/TCRTHS50thanniversary/
If any members of our school community have any memorabilia that they would be able to loan
or donate to the school for the celebrations please contact me at the school.
SRC Leadership Camp
It was fantastic to see the SRC attend their leadership camp at Burrendong Sport and Recreation
Centre earlier this week. The students worked on developing both their teamwork and
leadership skills, as well as focusing on their plans for the year ahead. A huge thank you must go
to Ms Lloyd and Mr Riles who took this group away.
Excursions
As the school year looks to get even busier, just a quick reminder about excursion permission
notes. It is essential that students who intend to attend an excursion return the original permission
note to the front office prior to the excursion leaving. The school is unable to accept hand
written notes or verbal permission for student to attend excursions. Students are always able to
collect a spare permission note from the front office if necessary.
Year 7 Exhibitions
It is with excitement that we look forward to the first exhibitions of Year 7 project work. As part of
the new curriculum structure we have introduced into Year 7 in 2017, students will complete a
number of projects during the year, and will exhibit their completed work. All of the Year 7
students and teachers have been working hard in the first five weeks of the term on the “Pieces
of Me” project which will be exhibited in Week 6.

Student Pick Up
To ensure the safety of all students and staff can I ask all parents and carers to pick up
students outside the school grounds, and not drive into the staff car park or bus bay. We have
a large number of buses that use our school as an interchange each day and the volume of
traffic is causing some concern at the moment.
Contact details
Can I ask that parents and carers ensure that contact details, including emergency contacts,
are up to date. It is essential that we are able to make contact with you when necessary. If
you need to update any details please collect a form from the Front Office.
I hope you have a great fortnight and I look forward to speaking with you in week seven.
With my warmest regards
Kate Wootten

MATHS FACULTY NEWS
In Mathematics, we have had a great start to 2017! All students should have received their
Assessment booklets and noted when they have Mathematics tasks due. If you do not have
a copy of your particular years’ assessment booklet, please see your Year Adviser.
Year 8 Star and Quay have been learning about factors and multiples. During one of their
lessons, they worked in pairs to solve a variety of problems involving special number
properties. Recently, the students learnt about the difference between prime and
composite numbers by colouring in various multiples on a hundreds chart. Next week during
class time, students will be creating posters that will demonstrate their understanding of
what they have learnt so far in Mathematics. These posters will be displayed in the
classroom.

Congratulations to all the students who are continuing to display a high level of effort in practical lessons
despite the recent high temperatures. The PDHPE teachers
make every effort to maximise the students time in the
shade and participate in activities that are suitable for the
hotter weather. Many of our teachers spend most of the
day in the heat working with our students and supporting
them during difficult conditions.
It is an expectation that all students participate in practical
lessons and follow all instructions given by their teacher.
Medical reasons for exclusion from a sport or PDHPE lesson
are only possible with a medical certificate signed by a
doctor accompanied by a letter from the parent.
A reminder that it is a good idea to bring along a hat and
ensure that your child has a drink bottle to use each day. If PDHPE Teachers were

If you thought Orange gun Matt Gray’s selection in the NSW under-20 side at just 16 – he’s now 17 – was the ultimate nod to his seemingly immeasurable potential, you’d be wrong. His performance for the side was.
Gray, playing three years above his actual age group, was huge for the sky blues at last week’s Basketball Australia Under-20 National Championship at Bendigo, where his NSW side ended up claiming a silver medal.
Playing centre, Gray featured in all seven of NSW’s games and ended up averaging almost 12 points per game. He also averaged almost five rebounds a game too.
His best performance came in NSW’s stunning competition-opening victory against Western Australia, which the sky blues won 110-100. Gray dropped 20 points in that game but more impressively, was gigantic in defence.
He produced five huge Dikembe Mutombo-like blocks and also notched seven rebounds to lead his side to victory.
Following that the sky blues were downed by South Australia (106-73), defeated Tasmania (90-76), lost to the ACT (76-66) and thumped Queensland 78-57 in their final round State of Origin battle. NSW finished fourth as a result.
The side produced its best performance of the tournament in the first-versus fourth semi-final to down the minor premiership-winning Victorian side. They did it easily too, winning 90-75 in the end, with Gray landing eight points and recording two blocks and six boards in another strong showing.
In the final, the sky blues fought hard against their more-fancied South Australian opponents. In fact, they probably should’ve won but for an incredible South Australian comeback. NSW led at all three of the breaks and was in the box seat at the final two in particular. After leading 13-12 at quarter-time, the sky blues extended that lead to 36-28 at half-time. South Australia pegged it back by one, to trail 58-51 at the final break. With 10 minutes between NSW and a stunning upset victory and gold medal, South Australia lifted. Big time. Led by Isaac White, who produced a game-high 19 points, the eventual champions piled on 24 points to NSW’s eight in the final term. In the final three minutes, South Australia really broke away. They took the lead with just over two and half minutes left, and never gave it up. Ultimately, South Australia claimed a 75-66 victory. Gray dropped six points, produced one more block and grabbed six boards in the decider, where he acquitted himself well against his older, bigger counterparts. NSW’s women’s under-20 also finished with a silver medal. That side was beaten by the ever-dominant Victorians, going down 85-60.

YEAR 7 NEWS
Welcome to Year 7 BBQ
Tuesday the 14th of February was the Welcome to Year 7 BBQ. Held out the front of the
Administration Block it was an evening with pleasant weather and many parents and staff of
Year 7 2017 coming together for a casual BBQ. The night was designed to help start
communications between the staff of Canobolas High and the Parents/Careers of Year 7 in an
informal setting.
I would like to thank everyone who came along and enjoyed a sausage sandwich cooked by
some of our SRC members. It was an enjoyable evening and it was great to meet so many
people and talk about how we can work together over the next 6 years.
I would also like to thank our Student Support Officer Nick Tucknott for the work he put into the
evening behind the scenes and Miss Hannah Lloyd for her assistance with cooking the BBQ.
Many thanks
