Ann’s Meanderings
Warm weather is just around the corner and my winter projects are nowhere near being
completed. I always figure I will get lots of painting done when it is too cold to do things outside but find that the cold and winter weather makes me want to be a bear and just sleep. Needless to say many things are getting a slow start this year. Our committees seem to be in the same state as me, slow to start. We have chairmen for many of the committees but now we need members to be on the committees. The luncheon committee will be chaired by Peg Altemus and Kathy Denneler this year. Look for the date, time and place for their first meeting in this newsletter or give them a call. I know it will be a fun, exciting and a wonderful Luncheon this year. They have lots to live up to after that wonderful “picnic” we had last year, but I have a feeling that this year will be just as great, so mark your calendar now for the July luncheon. The Painters Holiday is still looking for a chairman and if we don’t have one by the March meeting there will probably not be a Painters Holiday this year. Remember that the Painters Holiday is to be a bare bones seminar. We don’t get all the frills of a weekend in Williamsburg. No table centerpieces to make, just some great classes with great teachers and wonderful friends. If you have some time and some great ideas please give me a call and we’ll talk about how you can chair the Painters Holiday. I know I can find a committee to help put things together, what we need is somebody to lead us. We are going to be busy this year with Arlene Beck here for 3 days in March. There are still places available Friday and Sunday. If you are going to be at the March meeting and planning on staying to paint remember that there is a charge of $10.00 to stay and paint. We will be painting a nitelite with a pansy design. There are still some wood pieces available for $10.00 each. Contact me if you would like one set aside for you. Then, in September, Debbie Forshey will be here for 3 days. The seminar committee needs your input for teachers we can contact about coming here to teach. It takes several years sometimes to get national teachers to fit us into their schedule. Please bring a list of the teachers you’d like us to contact about teaching here and the committee will send out letters to see if there is any interest. Remember that at the May meeting we will have our Art Show. Kathy Denneler and Louise Fredrick are the Co-Chairs this year and the sign up sheet is in the newsletter, please come and show how talented you are. We have so very many talented
people in this chapter, I am always impressed. The fund raisers for this year are under way. With the chapter silent auction at National this year we hope to raise money for the Art Scholarship award for 2005. Thanks in advance to Kathy Denneler, Peg Altemus, Carol Snow, Erika Somers and Kay Brown for volunteering to paint something for the Auction. I will be sure that we have pictures of all the pieces before they are sent. Last year we received $227. from theTV trays that Kathy Denneler painted and sent to the Auction. Then in November we are participating in a Craft Show. For more details on that see the article that Lorraine Lasch wrote. We have great paint-ins lined up and please note that we don’t have the paint-ins on the same day this year so you can attend all of them. Thanks to the great work by our Md. And Va. Representatives. Kathy Denneler has already stated that she will transport pieces to the Va. State fair this year so if you have something you’d like to send contact Kathy. We also already have display cases available to display things in for Craft month (October). If you are planning on going to National this year in Phoenix please let me know. Also I know of several people that are looking for roommates. Give me a call or see me at the meeting and I’ll give you their names. I thank you in advance for helping to send me to National to represent our chapter. We are a great and diverse group. Please plan on coming to the meetings and paint-ins and renewing friendships and making our lives happier and better because you are here. Have a great day, week, month and year and come join us for one or more of our activities, we like it when you’re with us. Thanks
Ann Davis, President

At the same time, it was decided to charge $7.50 for the paint-ins held with chapter teachers and stated there will be a charge for pattern and class with Arlene Beck to be determined. If there is enough demand they discount them slightly. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call or e-mail [email protected]
Be sure to bring tape and an eraser along with your supplies.

The Board, with the approval of the Chapter at the Jan. meeting, has decided to have a fund raiser this year. It was agreed that the Chapter would participate in the Montclair Arts and Crafts Show, on Sunday, November 21, 2004, to be held at Forest Park H.S. in Dumfries, VA. We are asking that each chapter member donate at least two items that will be sold at the show and the proceeds from each sale would go to the chapter. If anyone desires to donate more that two items, please feel free to do so. We would like to start collecting the items as soon as possible Kathy Denneler and Ann Davis have agreed to store these items.
The Montclair Arts and Crafts Club (MACC) has been in existence since the 1970’s. They have two major craft shows a year, one in the Spring and one in the Fall. The proceeds from each show, after expenses, are used to support scholarships for children pursuing the Arts, mostly painting.
The cost to the chapter will be minimal as we have members of NCC who are members of that club. So, basically anything we make will be profit for the chapter.
This is usually a juried show for non-members. Since I am a member of MACC, and getting the table for the chapter, we will not be juried. I have promised MACC that only quality items will be in the show. So, I’m asking that anything you donate, please remember that it reflects on NCC and MACC. Kathy Denneler, who participates in many craft shows stated that what sells best are the items for under $25.00, but that is not to say that we will not accept anything you feel would cost over $25.00. Painted ornaments are also a go.
We are asking that members not price their items. There is going to be a committee, who will do that. Also, you can paint anything. It does not have to be geared towards the Christmas season. Snowmen do sell well, but people also like to buy flowered items.
For any member who would like to check out MACC’s Spring Show, it is being held on Sunday,
March 28, 2004. Directions to Forest Park H.S.: take I-395 to the Manassas Exit (Rt. 234). Follow Rt. 234 approximately 2 miles to Spriggs Road. Make a right on Spriggs and the High School is right there on the right.

Community Service
I am pleased to say that this is going to be a fun and exciting year for our community service projects.
In May we will be painting clocks for the Hermitage gift.
This is a quick and fun project. Please bring any rubber stamps or stencils that you have that can be used for this great project.
Don’t forget your regular painting supplies as well.
At the next meeting I will have several examples to show what we will be doing.
Amanda Davis

• From The Editor’s Desk
In case you hadn’t noticed, membership is down considerably. As of February 1 we counted 107 members. We are hoping this number increases as members realize that they forgot to renew for 2004. But nevertheless, membership will still be down considerably from peak years. Some of this is due to members moving out of the area, and some as members join chapters closer to their homes.
However, that still leaves those who may have become dissatisfied with the chapter or with the Society in general (other chapters are also reporting a general decline in membership). While we can’t do much about those who leave the area, nor fix the Wilson Bridge, we can do something to keep members from becoming dissatisfied and disillusioned. That is, we can do something but we need your help.I’m sure you’ve all heard the veterinarians’ lament – that they have to be mind readers to help cure patients who can’t say what’s bothering them. Sometimes we feel like veterinarians – we feel there are rumblings of discontent out there but feel helpless in deciphering the problem We also know on the other hand that there are some wonderful new ideas that you may have read or heard about to share. If there are areas that need addressing –either because you are bothered or someone has mentioned a problem/situation to you We need you to TELL US
An easy was is to fill out the questionnaire on page 18 of this newsletter. You need not fill it out completely. Just tell us what you would like to see addressed, what you don’t like which is as important as what you do like. What about programs ,venue, etc.Send your form to John Kirzl, 7211 Ashview Drive Springfield, VA 22153. or any other board member.

The new directory is being prepared. To ensure information is up to date please submit any additions or changes to John & Marie Kirzl by February 13. If you provided this information at the November or January meetings you need not resubmit.

We are including cell phone numbers in the directory this year. After Hurricane Isabel we learned that this was the only means of communication for people who lost both electricity and phone service, and therefore the only way to get them the cancellation information. If this is a concern please provide your cell phone number.
