WE CAN NO LONGER SIT BACK AND WINK

We are reminded that human beings are created in the

image of God. This gift grants us amazing capabilities for

creativity and community. We achieve our highest possibilities

when we support and share with one another. Communities,

working together with compassion, enable us to live fully and to

become more of what God made us to be. Tragically, however,

we frequently fail to live as we are intended. We regularly retreat

behind boundaries of race; a product of human imagination gone

horribly wrong.

The media has been flooded with the “Chants” and/or Boo’s” toward the movement known as

“Black Lives Matter.” Because the visibility of this movement has brought to light the disparity of justice

in the communities of color, the attempt to color it as a ”Black” and ”White” thing is just another way to

hide the truth. Those in Christ know that the love of God transcends all hate. The environment in today’s

society calls for one to distinguish the abuse perpetrated upon others, in particular, persons of color. It

is with this in mind that the Black Lives Matter movement remains visible as a banner raising the issues

affecting the lives of people of color.

As noted in a paper issued by the Lott Carey Global Christian Missional Community, August 15,

2015, “…Violence has characterized racial injustice in the United States. Physical, psychological, and

sexual violence have been used to terrorize and dehumanize people of color. The conscious or

unconscious perception of racial supremacy by people of European heritage is accompanied by the

privilege affiliated with this flawed assumption. Invalid beliefs of racial supremacy and white privilege

are advanced through economic, political, educational, religious, and media systems to project these

worldviews as normal. This toxic mixture of wrong beliefs and manipulative power has contributed to

increasing occurrences of violence against people of color, particularly our African-American males, by

law enforcement. These hideous abuses and fatalities, with rare accountability, are repulsive to and

destabilizing of civilized society.”

It is for these reasons that we must rise as people of God and call for an immediate end to

violence against people of color by law enforcement. We must also call for accountability from law

enforcement, the criminal justice system, U. S. communities, and our communities of color.

If we study history, we will see that throughout the history of the United States, racial injustice,

blatant or subtle, has helped to create environments in our communities where crime, drugs and

violence flourish. Please note that guns are not manufactured in our communities. Drugs are not grown

there.

The article also stated that “…Recent data shows that people of color are arrested, prosecuted,

and sentenced at a much higher rate than white people in the United States. Incarceration

disadvantages convicted persons when pursuing employment opportunities, limits civil engagement

like voting, destabilizes families, and contributes to financial fragility and poverty.”

Communities of color, though traumatized by centuries of racial injustice and various forms of

violence used to oppress us, cannot use bigotry and inequity as excuses for failing to create strength

among ourselves. We must organize to promote engaged citizenship, community strength, societal

uplift, and neighborhood vitality. We must exercise good judgment in spending our money with

businesses that will reinvest in our interests. We must cast our votes for people who will be accountable

for responsible governance in relationship to our needs.

We must teach our young men how to defuse, rather than incite, potentially impulsive situations

when engaged by a police officer with a badge and a weapon and who is clothed with government

authority. An ill-treated citizen cannot win a confrontation with law enforcement “in the moment.” We

must train our young people to use discernment, discretion, discipline, and documentation so that they

can live long enough to win in court or through arbitration. Racial injustice is unfair and injurious, but

people of color have survived and thrived despite slavery, despite segregation, and oppression. We

can and we must do so in the 21st century.

over the past 15 months. Jennifer served on various ministries in the

church and stayed quite busy, therefore we understand her

departure and her need to spend more quality time with her family.

Usher Ministry Serves Micah Meal

The Shiloh Baptist Church New Site Usher Ministry served the Micah Ministry Community meal on June

3, 2016. The meal consisted of chicken, green beans, potato salad, and cookies for the desert. Pastor

Parrish was a blessing as he preached prior the meal. The Usher Ministry would like to thank our

Church home for the opportunity to help in our community. We also thank Deacon Doug Richardson

for all he does in Jesus’ name.

Missionary Day Service

On Sunday July 31, 2016 Shiloh Baptist Church New Site

celebrated Missionary Day Worship Service as on all 5th

Sundays throughout the year. Min. Jonique Waiters

delivered a powerful sermon. The congregation was also

inspired by Sis. Sonya Johnson, who served as Worship

Leader. The Missionary Ministry is a blessing as they do the

Lord’s work in our Community.

This summer has been a time of rest, reflection, and prayer for Stephen Ministry. Specifically, we have

prayed for strengthening of the Ministry, for new members to be added to the class, and for volunteers

to help send the Journeying through Grief (JtG) letters and booklets. Our prayers have truly been

answered as God has sent several new class applicants and three volunteers for JtG: Sisters Ella

Wood, Mildred Green, and Robin Wilson (Psalm 17:6). We would like to introduce the JtG Team to you

so you will be able to connect the name with the face should they call your home for information about

where to send JtG materials. Pictured below are Sister Ella Wood, Deacon Eloise Chambers (standing),

Sisters Mildred Green and Robin Wilson, Minister Bernadine Parrish (standing), and Sister Faye

Patterson at our recent JtG training session. Please continue to keep Stephen Ministry in your prayers

as we interview and prepare to resume training in September.

Denise’s true passion led her to successfully perform over 120 events while having a full-time Information

Technology (IT ) career. She is knowledgeable in all areas of budgeting, planning, designing, decorating, as well

as managing and directing. Denise earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Systems Management

from Drexel University and held management positions in the IT and Software Engineering divisions of

Westinghouse and the Northrop Grumman Corporation for 33 years before retiring from the position of Director,

of Information Technology.

Denise is parlaying her corporate business savvy, people management skills, and her innate, God-given creative

abilities to develop exquisite designs and events. Her event planning passion started soon after high school,

when she successfully planned her sister’s and her best friends’ weddings and receptions. Denise does

everything with excellence and great attention to detail, desiring that every aspect of the event be outstanding

and exceeds customer expectations. Over the years, Denise has accumulated very unique and priceless pieces
