• Complete a change of status form, download from SSiD, Eg BA … with Employment Experience – get it signed by your Dept

Assessment
You are required to complete:• Placement Journal ( on MOLE)
• Skills Analysis (based on Placement Journal entries) Five skills you have developed – 500 words per skill
• Placement Report – 3000 words
• 120 credits for the year
• Presentation on return
• Assessed on a pass/fail basis

MOLE Placement Resource
• Enrolled onto MOLE Placement Resource 2014/15 from July 2015
• Instructions on where to locate Assessment Requirements will be given in the Email
• Ask permission from your placement Provider
• Log on at least every other week
• Used for Entries for Placement Journal/Skills Analysis and Placement Report
• Student Discussion Forum

communication , team working, organisation, numeracy as well as technical skills e.g IT

Placement Journal Entry – Skill Chosen - Business and Commercial Awareness• I have become much more attuned to the world of
business and how it operates. Regular meetings centred around the topic of business growth and progression reinforces the importance of extending our services to the public to generate profit. This is especially relevant in my department in regard to advertising; we are responsible for selling our services and ensuring that our expertise is known both nationally and internationally

Five Skills Analysis• Discuss the skill you have developed
• Describe the situation(s) that have contributed to the development of this skill
• What can you do now in this skill area that they couldn’t do previously?
• How you will be able to approach similar situations in the future considering what you have learnt when developing this skill and during your placement in general?
• Word limit per individual skills analysis: no more than 500 words

Placement report DEE• 3000 word report
• A critical evaluation of a management or technical issue/s that you have identified during your placement OR
• A critical evaluation of a project/s you have worked on during their placement.
In addition to the above, you should include in the report:
Executive Summary , profile of their placement provider, General profile of the placement provider including information on the organisation’s history, development, major business activities/products/services, management structure, competitors, financial information and future development plans
Recommendations for future action , Conclusion, Appendixes

• Don’t leave the assessment until the last minute
• Have a draft outline of your placement report ready for when your tutor visits you
• Discuss your placement report with your line manager as soon as (and any confidentiality issues)
• Confidentiality forms can be signed

• Very important you keep a record of your skills development
• Confidential – only accessed by placement team and department placement tutor
• Check if you are concerned re your placement companies confidentiality policy
• Useful reference for when you are completing graduate job applications & interviews
• If you cannot access MOLE – keep a record elsewhere and keep UoS informed

• Can apply for loan to cover fee and student maintenance loan via Student Finance

Making the Most of Your Placement …Before you start …• Keep up to date with what is happening with the organisation
• Dress code – if not sure, ask!
• Journey to work – if possible do a trial run

Once you are on placement..... First impressions count –
Be enthusiastic ! Even about mundane, routine tasks Look for friends/allies who can support you; be they
other students or staff. Remember to network – you never know who you
could meet .... (Get your employer to recommend you on LinkedIn)
Remember that the people you are working with could end up being your colleagues in the future, or provide a reference. Showing enthusiasm and interest may help with job prospects after your graduation.

Work place etiquette – understand the protocol of working in your team / department/organisation
Office politics – avoid wherever possible ! Be critically observant - WATCH and LISTEN but don’t necessarily comment
Observe and learn from others Check what the company policy is on

Be proactive - get involved – look for the little extras you can do instead of waiting to be directed to action
Take advantage of training opportunities – record your development on your CV
Update your cv/Linked In profile
Know your deadlines and stick to them , if you need to re-negotiate give as much notice as possible
If you are unsure don’t be afraid to ask !

Registering for your placement year
• You will need to register for your degree with employment as you do any other academic year
• You will be contacted and asked to register via MUSE
• You will be invoiced for the placement year fee when you register ( if you are not applying for student finance)
