MEMBERSHIP ANNIVERSARIES

Congratulations to Margaret Homan on her

40th anniversary of church membership this month.

She and Hal joined our church on March 30, 1980.

We neglected last fall to mention the

membership of Harvey Roll, who has our longest

continuous active membership. The church records

don’t have the exact date, but he joined the church

in the fall of 1949, a few months after he and Joann

were married. Belated congratulations to Harv on

your 70th anniversary of church membership!

Adam Romance and other members of Arcade UCC

Godly Play present Deb Howard, from United Methodist of Arcade, with a check for the food pantry.

The Arcade United Church of Christ, Congregational, at 297 Main St., Arcade, recognized its 12th annual Souper Bowl of Caring on Sunday, February 2, 2020. Each year, members donate food items and monetary donations for the Arcade Area Food Pantry, located at the United Methodist Church of Arcade, 212 E. Main Street.

The youth from Arcade UCC were in charge of the church service on February 2nd, teaching about how widespread hunger is in the United States. Their service brought in 257 food items and $311 in donations from the congregation that day. Following the service, the youth served soup to the congregation, asking them to remember those who cannot even afford a bowl of soup on Super Bowl Sunday. Then, on February 9th, the youth packed up the food items in homemade bags they had made from old t-shirts, to take to the Arcade Area Food Pantry. These bags were also given to the food pantry for reuse when plastic bags will no longer be available. Deb Howard, of the Arcade United Methodist Church, received the check on behalf of the food pantry and gave the youth a tour of the pantry. The food pantry is run by Roger Roper and a group of steadfast volunteers. It is open on Mondays and Thursdays from 12:30-2pm and serves the Pioneer School District community.

Through the One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) offering, we are planting seeds of new life. Together, we are investing in communities world-wide: providing education to girls and boys, empowering communities through vocational training, supporting microcredit lending and seeing people through to self-sufficiency, empowering families with skills to support themselves and their neighbors, and participating in sustainable solutions that offer dignity to all. These are just a few ways the OGHS offering touches God’s children, in addition to disaster relief and refugee initiatives. Today you have the opportunity to plant seeds into the lives of others. Be a co-worker with God. Building, planting, watering…and trusting that God gives growth to all good gifts shared in faith. We will be collecting for OGHS on March 8th and 15th. Thank you for your partnership. Thank you for your generosity.

Women of the Bible

Who are the women of the Bible? Why are they important? Continue reading along with me as we continue to discover their stories.

Mary and Martha: Sisters Now it came to Pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? Bid her therefore that she might help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful; and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. Luke 10: 38-42 KJV Where do our priorities lay? Do we get distracted by the everyday things of life each day and not take the time to praise God?

Committee Reports

Building & Grounds February 12, 2020 Meeting

Old Business: 1] Mike has received two estimates to replace the boiler in the church. One is from Stacy Thompson [$26,763.14] and the other from Tyson Brooks [$32,620.00]. 2] Bill has re-manufactured the handicap signs for Church St. He would like to add another one to the back parking lot. 3] Lary has received notification that the drapes for the church are done. 4] The walks and steps were shoveled. New business: 1] The new drapes need to be hung. Lary will hang them with help from other committee members. 2] The defibrillator pads and battery need replacing. They are by the mailboxes. Lary will replace the battery and pads. 3] Lary will contact a locksmith in Hamburg about replacing the push bars on the back of the annex doors with ones that are flush to the door. 4] Lary will open and Randy will close in March.

Outreach Committee Present: Wally Lowth, Liz Lowth, Sheila Vrenna, Jo Sixt, Kim Common REVIEW OF MINUTES: Minutes from the last meeting in January were read and approved after one name spelling was corrected. OLD BUSINESS: • Community Supper - We served 80 dinners in December and collected $107 in donations. We spent $43.98 • Shepard’s Program and Letter Writers Wanted - Jo continues to send out many brightly colored cards of hope and inspiration. • Visitations - Outreach has determined that during this winter period with illness skyrocketing, that visitations should temporarily be suspended to protect both the visitor and the people who were being visited. • “Open for Prayer” and Coffee Break - We have been continuing faithfully

Tuesday mornings with varying numbers of participants. Since we have received our requested funding for the program from The WACM we are encouraging everyone who is currently donating supplies to now bring receipts for reimbursement in order to keep an accurate record of monies being spent on this project. It was determined that $100 be kept available in our account for this purpose. • The concern with the plight of our local farmers and growing difficulties economically has brought about arranging for a program called “Talk saves lives” which will be presented by Kristen Fisher who is the Assistant Director for Adult Services Coordinator of the Wyoming County Suicide Prevention Coalition. A date set for March 10, 2020 is currently planned to present this program with a time of 2PM suggested as a good time to accommodate most farm schedules. • Wally and Liz Lowth officially resigned from the committee at the close of this meeting as they prepare for a new journey in life. • The meeting was adjourned at 11:48 with our next meeting date March 8, 2020.

Consent Agenda – The Consent Agenda consisted of January Council minutes, Treasurer’s Report and Spreadsheet, Worship and Music minutes for February, Jeff Mason’s additional notes, Outreach minutes for February, Building and Grounds report for February, Endowment report from December 2019, and the February Parish Paper. Dirk Norwich made the motion to pass the consent agenda, Kim Common seconded and the agenda was approved. Discussion Agenda –

Search Committee: Vanessa Adams stated that the committee decided to pass on the first profile that was received. They are praying for more profiles to come in. Vanessa will see Gary Ferner on Feb. 22nd and March 8. She will check on a possible lunch with him and Pastor Shawn. Kim Common asked if there are any profiles coming across Gary’s desk. Vanessa said no. If he saw any that were a potential match, he would pursue it. The committee is going to look into having the moving allowance added to the front cover so potential pastors will be sure to see it. Vanessa questioned if we need to lower our criteria – fewer years of experience? This could allow us to search for a full-time pastor. They will be adding Godly Play description to the Church Profile – Deb Wood will write this up. Old/Continued Business –

Key Changes/Key Policy – Key changes will remain on the agenda.

Donations in Lois Yauchzy, Gordon Comstock and Doris Crabb’s names- Kim Common mentioned using the money to fix the front windows (better insulation, etc.) Bill Schaper said this was discussed at Building and Grounds – the outcome was that nothing can be done because of the structure and accessibility. Would need an outside contractor to give us estimates. Bill will bring it up again to Building and Grounds. Debi Lutz told that the blinds for Godly Play, church office and Great Room are in and just need to be installed. Money for these came from the Memorial Funds.

Pastoral Care and Pay – Kim explained that Outreach had been doing a small amount of visiting but it’s on hold temporarily due to flu/sickness this

time of year. Vanessa told that Phyllis Pierce enjoys our service recordings. By-Laws – tabled until next meeting. Cleaning – A personnel matter was discussed and it was decided to seek other means for cleaning the church. New Council Co-Chair - Rich suggested Debi Lutz be the co-chair. Bill suggested having Rich be the sole Chairperson. This was tabled and will be decided upon and made official at the next meeting. New Council member to replace Wally Lowth’s position – Bill told that the bi-laws state that only an associate member or member of the church can be on Council. We can appoint someone if necessary – but all hope that someone will step forward. New Business – Pastor Bob Dievendorf’s Thank You Letter – Pastor Bob’s thank you letter for the brick that was purchased in his honor for Hope Lutheran’s community center was shared. Suicide Prevention Presentation – Outreach is offering this presentation on March 10 from 2-3pm with Kristen Fisher, Coordinator of Wyoming Co. Suicide Prevention Coalition. To be held in Great Room or Wetzel Hall if number in attendance requires. Removal/Disposal of Old TV Cart - discussed Food Donations from Crooked Rooster Restaurant – brought into Church and may be receiving more in the future from them. Boiler Estimates – Bill told that there is a lot of work involved in putting in a new system and having it up to code. Two estimates were given – Pete Roll recommends Stacey Thompson. Work would be done late summer/early fall. This item will remain on the Building and Grounds agenda. Bill also mentioned that roofing tiles were worked on last Monday – the work took less than an hour. He also stated that he will be putting another handicap sign in the back parking lot. Vanessa ended the meeting in prayer. Meeting adjourned at 7pm.

Financial Assistant for March 2020: Debi Lutz. Next meeting will be held: March 24, 2020 at 6:30pm.
