One of these is the legendary CARRARMATO sole, literally the “Tank” sole, imagined, studied and created more than 75 years ago by Vitale Bramani, Academic of the Italian Alpine Club and founder of Vibram®. In 1937 Bramani, returning from a tragic moun- taineering expedition which cost a number of people their lives, began to think about how he could make a drastic improvement to safety. His intuition came through an analogy, as is so often the case: why not make the soles of shoes the same way we make tires? The result was the first CARRARMATO sole for hiking boots made of vulcanised rubber: an ingenious expression of the unique quality of Italian-made products, soon to become an icon of modern design the world over. Today The CARRARMATO sole has literally revolutionised not only the world of moun- tain-climbing and outdoor sports, but the entire footwear industry. Vibram® now produces dozens of different versions of the revolutionary sole designed spe- cifically for mountain-climbing, hiking, trekking, work and urban life. Vibram® - the brand name standing for the name of its founder, Vitale Bramani – is a universally recognised symbol of total quality and exclusive technology.
