Born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Jon Pittman was raised in Virginia and

eventually graduated high school from Sharonville, Ohio. He appreciates having a theatre troupe here at AIOHC, which is a luxury at few other AI Schools. “It’s a unique experience for us to show our artistic abilities in a different ways.” This evening he directs Murder by Midnight. It marks the third play Pittman has directed for the Shoestring Players. This Interior Design Major is happy about it for many reasons. “The Troupe allows us to get out into public and help get over some of our fears of speaking publicly.”

Christohpher “Topher” Putnam is a Garretsville, Ohio native who

has been working in theatre since he was 12-years-old, and has both performed and directed onstage. As an aspiring Animation Major at AI he looks forward to his final performance before graduating. “I am an advocate for good storytelling. I feel as though one can better grasp art as a whole through learning and acknowledging every aspect of it.” He has performed in over a dozen works for the Shoestring Players and has walked away with several Bonnie Awards including Best Actor and Best Director. This evening he does a one man show that he directs and stars in entitled, Roll Call.

Katheleen Medd is a native to Sandusky, Ohio and the town’s Harlequin

Community Theatre, which was her home for 18 years. “I firmly believe that theatre is one of the best ways to enhance confidence. Young students need as much traction as they can acquire in ‘life skills.’ This kind of program builds relationships, teaches group effort, and allows a person to improve their judgment in a variety of areas.” An Interior Design Major, Kathleen looks forward to the evening. “I enjoy directing, mostly because the process really engages my imagination. Also, I like to see the actors develop their characters through my coaching. The performance is the icing.” Tonight Kathleen directs The Chocolate Affair.

Robert “Twitch” Bryant is an Animation Major at AI but considers

himself a fulltime artist. “You get to bring an idea to life in a way that you see it through your eyes but you have to direct other people to act it through your eyes,” he explains. “So there is a great deal of challenge, but nothing worth doing is ever easy..” As a native to Manchester, Ohio “Twitch” makes his directing debut this evening in grand fashion with a marriage between the famous Schwarzenegger and Stallone families, a concept he had in mind for some time when he came to producer Erik Sprowls with the concept. Tonight he directs “Get to ‘Da Chapel!”

What does a Culinary Management need with the theatre troupe? It wouldn’t appear like much but don’t short change its value. “Many students need to get experience in different fields, most importantly that of speech. Being a director teaches to guide and

how to be responsible,” says Hailey Wagers, a Culinary Management Major. A

native of Blue Ash, Ohio Hailey loves the opportunity like that of a chef. “Its nice to be in charge and put together art and see it grow.” Sounds an awful lot like cooking, wouldn’t you say? “If I can make one person’s day then I did my job.” Indeed it does. Tonight, I Can’t Think of It Right Now marks her directorial debut with the Shoestring Players.

Erik Sprowls teaches Effective Speaking here at AI and is the producer of

tonight’s show. A published and award-winning director for many years in theatre, television and film, Erik is also the advisor of the troupe. While working on his Doctoral dissertation in Communication he is an active contributor to the arts and philanthropist to animal rights (thus the SPCA Sponsor this evening). He looks at these plays as a way for students to express themselves through performing while permitting them to break out of their shells. “When it comes to speaking it’s also important to get your hands dirty and show an audience you practice what you preach.” Originally from Pittsburgh, he has taught at several universities including California University as well as the Philadelphia and Washington, DC areas respectively. He has captured a national title for AI in 2010 and directed the Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre here at AI in December. He has also adapted all of the plays for the stage this evening and wrote Get to ‘Da Chapel and Squashed Like a Grapefruit. Tonight he directs The Gas Station Amendment, Elementary Dating and stars in a one-man bit called Ladies and Gentlemen, The Amazing Jesus

Paul Coleman describes his latest directorial effort this evening like this, “Have

you ever met someone that you thought you could have a great relationship with but say something that you wish you could take back?” That’s the premise of the story and Paul enjoys the script very much. “It’s fun. You see where you think the story is going and someone can bring something to the team that you may have not expected and things can go in a totally different direction.” That’s the beauty of directing. As a Culinary Major at the Art Institute, Paul feels his work with the theatre troupe is an added bonus. “I think it is important to have the troupe because it adds another layer of artistic outlet to the campus.” As a Cincinnati native, Paul likes what he has seen at rehearsals. “We laugh until we cry.” Tonight he directs The Sure Thing.

Andrew Prell is studying to get his Bachelor’s Degree in Digital Photography.

Perhaps that is why he is eager to position actors and the like on a stage. “It has been crazy putting it together after jumping on board a few weeks in,” he laughs. “I had no idea what I was signing up for and hope to see where it takes me.” Prell is a Cincinnati Native who appreciates the directing aspect and hopes to one day apply the experience to his life. “I like directing because you are in control of what happens. You decide where something goes, what someone says, how it acts out. If something bad happens, it’s your fault. For some reason the responsibility draws my attention, and gives me challenges and experience I can use for my career in the future.” Tonight Andrew directs THE DMV LADY.
