What if the only history that existed for your people wasone of slavery? Imagine having members of your familysold. You don’t know where they went and you neverhave contact with them again. Celebrating one’s historyis a way to come together and explore one’s ethnicgroup and their accomplishments. The founder of BlackHistory Month, Carter G Woodson, lived in NewCanton, VA and was very poor. He did not attendschool, but at the age of 17 he had taught himself thefundamentals of education. Pick up a copy of his fullstory by the calendar board. Enjoy your February!

A Presidential MonthTwo of America’s most famous leaders, 1st President

George Washington and 16th President Abraham Lincoln, were born in February, contributing to the establishment

of Presidents Day. The federal holiday on the thirdMonday of the month celebrates all U.S. presidents. Two

others were also born in February: William HenryHarrison and Ronald Reagan.

Phrase: Learn by heart Meaning: To memorizeOrigin: Many of us know things by heart—from the

multiplication tables to the words of our favorite song. But why do we say “heart” instead of “head” when talking

about memorization, which involves the brain?Historians say it’s because the ancient Greeks believed theheart was the center of intelligence and memory as well as

emotion. This led to the idea of learning something byheart, and the phrase has been in use since the 1300s.
