I started May by attending commencement ceremonies to celebrate the graduation of my daughter’s future husband, my future son-in-law. I am sure many of you have also attended or will be attending like celebrations at the college, high school or middle school level. Not only are these occasions a time to celebrate the achievements of graduates, but also a time to recognize and appreciate those who have been influential in shaping those that will be our future. In the gradua-tion addresses, a common theme raised by the speakers was highlight-
ing a life-changing event that came more often than not from a teacher that had encouraged and mentored them. So too in May, the Philadelphia Section recognized excellence in teaching in the chemical sciences at the college and high school levels. The award ceremony held at the University of the Sciences, celebrated the outstanding achievements in teaching of Dr. Maryellen Nerz-Stormes (Bryn Mawr College) and Ms. Dana L. Puskas, (Neshaminy High School, Langhorne, PA). The Philadelphia Section was also fortunate to have Professor Charlie Bamforth, Anheuser-Busch Endowed Professor of Malting and Brewing Sciences at UC Davis, deliver his lecture entitled The Captivating Chemistry of Beer. Over 60 attendees were privi-leged to hear a highly entertaining lecture on the role chemistry plays in providing the complex solution we know as beer. After the lecture and presentation of the awards, over 40 guests joined Maryellen, Dana and Charlie at the banquet dinner. The Section thanks the University of the Sciences for providing an outstanding venue for our May meeting!
At the June meeting, the Philadelphia Section will be recognizing the ACS 50- and 60-year members by having a recognition lunch at the Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF). In addi-tion to the lunch, CHF will provide a tour of its museum as well as providing an after lunch lec-turer. I encourage those that are able to attend the lunch celebrating our 50- and 60-members and to enjoy a day celebrating the history of chemistry at CHF. Further details can be found in this issue of the Catalyst.
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT COURSE
We have received funding for the Leadership Development Course “Leading without Authori-ty”. It will be offered on September 17th. The normal cost for one of these classes is $150. We are offering it for $15 in order to cover lunch. There is a really limited number of people that can take this course. NEWS ATOMS—Alan Warren Kyle Diuro of Villanova University was named one of the 2016 SCI Scholars. Sponsored by the Society of Chemical Industry, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and the ACS, the program provides a 10-week internship for students. Diuro will be placed with Chemtura.
Philadelphia Section Chair Rick Ewing also serves as chairman of the ACS Committee on Economic and Professional Affairs. In his article in the April 25 C&EN he discusses employ-ment surveys that provide important data that is monitored by the Society. The two major tools are the Comprehensive Survey of Salary and employment status (CEPA), and the New Gradu-ate Survey of graduates in chemistry and chemical engineering. Rick encourages ACS members to participate in those surveys when asked.
DEATHS
Stuart W. Churchill, emeritus engineering professor, March 24, 2016 at 95. Following brief employment at Shell Oil and Frontier Chemical, he joined the faculty of the University of Mich-igan, serving as chairman of the department of chemical and metallurgical engineering 1962-1967. In 1967 he joined the University of Pennsylvania as the Carl V. S. Patterson professor of chemical engineering.
Churchill was a member of the National Academy of Engineering and received its Founders award for outstanding leadership in research, education and professional service and for his contributions in the fields of combustion, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics. He authored over 300 papers and six books. Churchill received a number of awards from the AIChE, Penn, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

We are drawing up the slate of candidates for the fall 2016 election. Specifically, we are look-ing for members interested in the chair-elect position. The chair-elect is a three-year commit-ment. In the first year as chair-elect the winning candidate chairs the Section awards committee and the program committee, which plans the events for the following year when the chair-elect becomes the Section chair. In the second year the chair conducts the Section meetings. In the third year the winning candidate becomes the past-chair and serves as the chair of the nomina-tions committee. Although these responsibilities may seem onerous, the board of directors plays a significant role in all aspects and running the Philadelphia Section really becomes a shared task. There are many outstanding volunteers in our Section! So even if you are unsure about your availability for three years, please consider running for the position of chair-elect.

HONORING OUR 50-YEAR MEMBERS
At our June Section meeting, we will honor our 50-year members, presenting them with a cer-tificate and luncheon at the Chemical Heritage Foundation in recognition of their long and faith-ful service to the Society. Those being honored include the following:
DR. MICHAEL DE ROSA
Dr. Michael De Rosa is a professor of Chemistry at Penn State Brandywine in Media, PA. He received his BS in chemistry from the City College of New York and a PhD in organic chemistry from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York (CUNY). His graduate work was on the chem-istry of nitrenium ions with Prof. Paul Haberfield.
After receiving his PhD, he and his wife joined the Peace Corps. During this period he taught and did research in the department of chemistry at Universidad Simon Bolivar (USB) in Cara-cas, Venezuela. After the Peace Corps he continued working at USB and was promoted to Profesor Titular. During this period he worked with undergraduate and masters students on the chlorination of indoles, carbazoles and pyrroles and his group discovered electrophilic aromatic substitution in pyrroles by addition-elimination. He spent sabbaticals at the University of Flori-da and the University of Texas.
He came to Penn State Brandywine in 1989. His research focus has been on the synthesis and reactions of the previously unknown un-substituted derivatives of 2- and 3-aminopyrrole. This work has been carried out principally by undergraduates and funded through grants from the National Science Foundation. He has over 50 publications. Awards from the Campus, the Commonwealth College, and the Eberly College of Science have recognized his work with un-dergraduates. Dr. De Rosa has received two Fulbright Scholar Awards: Ghana (1997-98) and the Slovak Republic (2005-06).
Dr. De Rosa and his wife will celebrate 50 years of marriage in June 2016. He and his wife en-joy traveling and have visited all seven continents. He is a photographer and bird watcher.
DR. ANNE R. EGAN
Dr. Egan earned a BS in Chemistry, MS in Organic Chemistry and PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Connecticut before joining the Rohm and Haas Chemical Co. in Philadelphia as a senior scientist in 1983. She was Head of Fungicide Research from 1991 to 2001 leading a cross-functional department

the Catalyst in the discovery of novel antifungals and a new commercial fungicide. In 1995, Dr. Egan as-sumed added responsibilities for leading new product development and global management of core fungicide products. Chairman of the North American Fungicide Resistance Action Com-mittee from 1992 to 1996, she has been an invited speaker at scientific conferences and holds more than 35 patents and publications.
In 2001, she joined the Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. in Princeton managing teams in all stages of drug development across multiple therapeutic areas. As a Director she supervised project man-agers responsible for programs in the Immunology and Cardiovascular portfolios, was a core member of leadership and governance review committees, and led initiatives for optimizing de-velopment. Dr. Egan received numerous executive awards for strategic program planning and execution, contributions to achieving milestones and regulatory submissions and recognition for well-prepared FDA advisory committee teams leading to approval and commercialization of two immunosuppressive biologic drugs. She retired in 2012. Dr. Egan and her husband of 48 years are outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy hiking, biking, and skiing. When not spending time with their two children and five grandchildren, they love to travel.
DR. MARY G. MCCOY
Dr. McCoy is enjoying retirement after teaching over 20 years at Neumann University, fol-lowed by several years as a part-time research specialist in the Penn Cardiovascular Research Institute. She received her BA degree with departmental honors from the College of Wooster, and her PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Cincinnati, where her research was on the direct and sensitized photochemistry of azobenzene. She is a member of Sigma Xi.
After completing her degree at University of Cincinnati, she had a postdoctoral fellowship in the Harrison Department of Surgical Research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, followed by a two-year research associate position there. Per-course teaching posi-tions at local colleges led to 22 years of teaching at Neumann University, where she received the Lindback award and retired as an Emeritus Professor of Chemistry. Recently she served as a research specialist in the Penn Cardiovascular Institute. Complete retirement occurred in June 2015.
Dr. McCoy and her husband of 48 years are parents of three adult children and grandparents of three active grandchildren. She thoroughly enjoys hiking the back-country trails found in Grand Teton, Yellowstone and Rocky Mountain National Parks.
DR. RICHARD E. NAIPAWER
Dr. Naipawer received his BA in Chemistry, MS and PhD all from Rutgers. He is a member of Phi Lambda Upsilon. His research at Rutgers under the direction of the late Prof. Hugh W. Thompson studied the control of the stereochemistry of hydro-genation, resulting in the term “haptophilicity”.

the Catalyst After graduating, he joined Givaudan Corporation R&D in Clifton, NJ. Initially, he was in-volved in isolating and synthesizing naturally-occurring flavor constituents of foods. He then joined the Aroma Chemical R&D. He and his co-worker, the late Dr. Gary W. Shaffer, devel-oped a rudimentary SAR for chemicals possessing a sandalwood odor resulting in the patenting of two valuable sandalwood odorants – Sandalore® and Ebanol®. His research has resulted in many patents and chapters in several books.
In the late 1990s, he moved to Fragrance Regulatory and then to Quality. In the early 1990s, he managed the toxicological submissions to obtain FDA approval of Avobenzone (Parsol® 1789), Givaudan’s UVA sunscreen
In 2003, after 36 years with Givaudan, he retired and became a consultant for Givaudan, fully retiring in 2010.
Dr. Naipawer and his wife have been married for 48 years. They enjoy their grandsons. He en-joys gardening and assisting members of his family with genealogy.
BRUCE SCHAEFFER
Bruce Schaeffer is currently retired after being employed for 35 years at Glaxo SmithKline Corporation. He received his BS in Chemistry from Lehigh University and Masters in Comput-er Science from Villanova University.
After graduating Lehigh he spent two years in the Army and then joined Smith Kline & French Laboratories in Philadelphia. There he was employed as an analytical chemist performing most-ly wet chemistry testing. He later worked in methods development and automated analytical procedures. During this time he attended Villanova to obtain a degree in Computer Science.
While at SmithKline he moved from Analytical Chemistry to supporting scientific computer applications. These applications included chromatography data systems, compound database, and sample tracking applications. The applications supported were in Philadelphia, King of Prussia, Research Triangle Park, Puerto Rico and other locations.
Bruce has been married for 44 years and has three children. He works for Montgomery County as judge of elections in Lower Pottsgrove. Some of his interests include chess, cutting wood, listening to on-line scientific courses and finishing the interior of a new porch. Currently, Bruce is trying to learn the game of Go with mixed results.
WILLIAM R. THOMAS
After two years in the US Navy, Bill attended Penn State University, where he received his degree in Chemistry. Bill changed his original intent to teach by entering the corporate world with Aeroprojects Company (West Chester,

the Catalyst PA), in 1951. Aeroprojects, was an ultrasonics firm with government contracts to expand the current state-of-the-art to other possible applications.
In 1955, Bill joined the Oxy-Catalyst Company (Berwyn, PA.) and assisted Eugene Houdry in the development of the catalytic converter for automobiles and diesel engines. From there, Bill took a position (St. Joseph, Michigan), with the Whirlpool Corporation (1962-1972), in the are-as of air, water, and waste control product development. At Whirlpool, Bill also participated in research contributing to the early NASA Space program including the chemical testing of astro-naut’s food.
Since then, Bill has worked for several companies as an independent consultant and with the Certain-Teed Corporation, in their product and research development department. Bill holds many patents and co-patents.
Now semi-retired, Bill and his wife Dorothy celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with 3 children, 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
