If you are a Catholic, we at Our Lady of Walsingham receive Holy Communion kneeling and by intinction (both species on the tongue).
If you are not a Catholic, during Communion we invite you either to come forward with your arms crossed over your chest, or fingers across your lips, and receive a blessing from the Priest or Deacon, or remain in your pew and reflect on the presence of Christ.

Good Shepherd Sunday & the Paschal Candle
The Fourth Sunday of Easter is known as “Good Shepherd Sunday.” The propers and lections for this Sunday all re-
mind us that on the Cross Christ laid down His life for His sheep, and after His Resurrection He gathered up His flock
and appointed Peter to take His place as shepherd. The Good Shepherd motif, so prominent in this Mass, represents
a deepening of the Paschal mystery: He who is the sacrificial Passover Lamb abides with us and with His Church as
the shepherd of our souls.
The Paschal Candle burns at all Masses as a beacon of the season from Easter through Pentecost. Dating back to the
fourth century, the liturgical symbolism of the Paschal Candle was well established in Western Christendom by the
eighth century. Blessed at the Easter Vigil and lit from the New Fire, the Paschal Candle represents Christ our Passo-
ver and recalls the divine pillars of cloud and fire that led the Hebrews in their exodus from bondage in Egypt. Thus
signifying our deliverance in Christ and our joy in the risen Lord, this Easter taper contains the principal signs and
symbols of our redemption.
In the virgin wax of the candle we recognize the spotless flesh which Christ took from His Blessed Mother; the wick
betokens Our Lord's human soul; and the flame signifies the divinity of the Second Person of the Trinity. Marked
with a cross, the candle commemorates the Holy Sacrifice at Calvary, and the wax is pierced with five nails, symboliz-
ing the five wounds of Jesus. As Christ is also the uncreated Logos, the candle bears the Greek letters Alpha and
Omega denoting Christ as the Beginning and the End, together with the inscription of the current year 2018 in token
of Our Lord's presence in His Church, here and now, this year in this place.
In the traditional Roman Rite, the Easter taper remained lit for forty days until the feast of the Ascension when the
candle was dramatically extinguished just after the reading of the Gospel narrative of Our Lord's bodily Ascension
into heaven. While the rising wisps of smoke poetically evoked Christ's physical disappearance into the clouds, mod-
ern Roman usage restores an even older tradition in observing the "Great Fifty Days" of Eastertide and keeping the
Paschal Candle lit until Pentecost. After the last Mass of Whitsunday, the Paschal Candle will move from the chancel
to the baptistery where it will remain until the end of the liturgical year. Then the Paschal Candle will burn at every
christening and every funeral to remind us that in baptism we die with Jesus and rise with Him to new life.
