GOSPEL Luke 14:25-33 HOMILY CREED

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,

consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(all bow through “and became man”)

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

This past week I had the privilege of celebrating the opening school Mass for our students at Cataldo Catholic School. I use the word “privilege” because I find great consolation in being able to hand on our Catholic Faith to the next generation. Children have such a sense of openness to God and His Church. Their lives of faith are not yet damaged by cynicism or doubt and thus they trust what we tell them about the truth of Jesus Christ. The innocence and sense of trust in our children is precisely why it is so horrendous to think about anyone wanting to harm them. As we begin a new year of education

and formation – both in school and our Cathedral religious education programs - it is important to remember that our local Church remains solidly committed to protecting children from all forms of abuse. The Diocese of Spokane has engaged the services of VIRTUS which provides a series of training programs and curriculum focused on the safety of children. VIRTUS identifies best practices which are designed to promote healthy behavior and relationships within religious organizations. It also assists with things like identifying potential perpetrators and recognizing signs of abuse in children. VIRTUS is used in conjunction with our other diocesan policies and procedures such as background checks and the Code of Conduct. If you are a teacher at Cataldo, or a volunteer in our Cathedral Religious Education Programs or Youth Group, you are very familiar with our safe environment program. All employees and volunteers with ongoing unsupervised access to children are screened, trained, and then updated on a regular basis. This applies to your clergy as well. All of these efforts reflect an ongoing commitment to be vigilant and prepared to do all we can to protect the innocence of our children and keep them safe. Asking for the prayers of Our Lady of Lourdes, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ,

Father Darrin Connall Rector

The Rosary making group will NOT be meeting on Monday, September 5th. Rosary making will resume Monday, September 12th.

The Pro-Life Ministry members will meet TODAY between the 9:00 and

11:00 a.m. Masses in O'Connor Hall behind the Cathedral. Please come and help us plan the October 1st Pro-Life

Children's Rosary at 10:00 a.m. led by Bishop Daly. We are so excited about planning all the details. Come and give us your ideas! “Life is precious and we owe it to God to make the

most of each day He has given us".

Welcome! Alejandro Camberos is a candidate for seminary who will be engaging in pastoral ministry here at the Cathedral for the next three months. Alejandro is discerning his

vocation and considering applying for the Diocese of Spokane. He will be living in the rectory while visiting the sick, assisting at Mass, and helping with parish programs. Please make Alejandro feel welcome!

Jesus tells the crowd that only those who renounce all of

their possessions can be His disciples. Is He truly asking

us to give up everything? Perhaps instead He is trying to

help us see that everything we think we own is really a gift

from God. Good stewards know that and strive to use

those gifts accountably.

Sacramental Preparation

Beginning Sunday, October 2nd, children from second grade and up will prepare for the Sacraments of Penance and First Holy Communion. There will also be a program for children needing to prepare to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Families may now register their children for Sacramental Preparation at the Cathedral by visiting the Cathedral’s website, http://www.spokanecathedral.com. Bishop Daly will offer the Mass of Confirmation and First Holy Communion on Sunday, May 28, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. First confessions will be Saturday, December 17, 2016.

An information session for parents will take place on Sunday,

September 18th in the lower level of the Cathedral following the

9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Masses.

Welcome Back!

Our Lady of Lourdes Altar Society would like to invite you to our "Welcome Back" Luncheon on Tuesday, September 13th at 1:00 pm in the Lower Level Dining Room. Please RSVP for a seat at the table by calling Darlene Gaffney at 624-8724 or Sherry Schmidt at 714-9198.

The Cathedral's Knights of Columbus Council #14922 is running a Winter Coats for Kids drive! We are asking for donations of new or gently used coats that will be distributed to needy children. All sizes are needed. Please bring your coats to Mass on Sunday, September 11th, and deposit them in the large bin located by the Bishop's Chair in the Sanctuary. You can also bring your coat downstairs with you to breakfast that morning, where an additional bin will remain through the month of September. Thank you!

Sunday, September 11th

Next Sunday our Cathedral Parish will be hosting a “Ministry Fair” after all morning Masses. This will provide parishioners with an opportunity to learn more about the various ministries of our parish and to consider giving back some time and talent as a volunteer. Please plan on joining your fellow parishioners for our Ministry Fair next weekend!

RCIA

In response to the Church’s ongoing mission of evangelization, the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes will be offering a program of instruction for those interested in the Catholic Faith and in living a full sacramental life within the Church. This program may be of interest to the unbaptized, or to the baptized non-Catholic Christians who wish to become fully initiated into the Catholic Church. Classes will begin Saturday, October 1st at 10:00 am in the Ribble Center. For more information or to register for classes, please contact Deacon John Sicilia at 358-4290 or [email protected].

A Spiritual Journey to Croatia

Imagine yourself on an enjoyable and faith-filled 12-day journey through the beautiful cities, villages, and countryside of Croatia and the Adriatic Coast! The trip, organized by Catholic Charities Foundation, will be led by knowledgeable priests and guides as we explore the illuminating and important culture, history and beauty of this predominantly Catholic region of Europe. Travel dates are March 25 - April 5, 2017. Special travel presentations will be held in Spokane and Walla Walla in early September. Please visit www.catholiccharitiesspokane.org or contact us at (509) 358-4255 or [email protected] for details.

Children’s Living Rosary

Saturday, October 1st begins Respect Life month and the month traditionally dedicated to the Holy Rosary. On this day at 10:00 a.m. Bishop Daly will join our children for a ‘Living Rosary’ at the Cathedral in honor of the Mother of God and of the gift of life. Please join us! We will need 60 children to help lead the prayers of the Rosary. If you have a child who would like to lead one of the prayers, please e-mail Sr. Paschalina at [email protected] with their names and ages.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Crosswalk is a the only shelter in downtown Spokane specifically geared towards homeless & at-risk teens. Their programs include counseling, providing clothing & basic hygienic necessities including showers, tutoring & school drop-out prevention programs, transportation, emergency housing, life-skills, parenting classes for young mothers, and more. They dedicate themselves to serving these kids aged 13-17 and are desperately trying to provide the care needed to break the cycle of youth homelessness.

For many years, parishioners at the Cathedral have helped this shelter by providing a simple meal for 20 kids on the first Sunday of every month. Unfortunately, the number of volunteers has dwindled over time, and is now down to 2 or 3 families to provide 12 meals per year. Meals can be easy, such as pizza, frozen lasagna, chili, etc. and you are not required to stay and serve; you can just cook the meal and drop it off! If you are not financially able to contribute but still want to help, the Cathedral Poor Fund will reimburse you for the cost of the dinner. Please consider volunteering for this important mission. For further information, call Marilyn Jans at (509) 448-0999.

The 20th Annual Caring for Kids luncheon benefitting St. Anne’s Children and Family Center and Morning Star Foundation will be held on Tuesday, Sept 20th from 11:30 am to 1:15 pm at the DoubleTree Spokane. We will celebrate the remarkable histories of these programs and best-selling author Mary LoVerde will offer a keynote address entitled “Don't Miss Anything: Innovative Strategies for Staying Connected to What's Really important.” Tickets are $100 per person and $50 for our supporters 30 or younger. Register online at www.CatholicCharitiesSpokane.org/events. For more information, contact Judy Lee at 358-4254 or [email protected]

Scriptural Reflection

September 4, 2016 — Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

WIS 9: 13-18B; PS 90: 3-6, 12-17; PHMN 1: 9-10, 12-17; LK 14: 25-33

At the end of today’s Gospel Reading from St. Luke, Jesus says a lot about what it means to be His disciple — the demands and the expectations. As His final statement in the reading, He says, “…anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.” This is another case where the translation from the original Greek may produce misunderstanding. Most of us understand the word “renounce” as meaning “reject” or

“hand over.” However, another meaning of the Greek word might be “to say goodbye to.” That is the real message, and it is one with a strong stewardship element. What the Lord may be trying to communicate is our possessions can stand in the way of being His disciple and being a good steward. It is a question of trust. Trust is at the center of a stewardship way of life. Jesus tells us that we need to trust in Him to a greater extent than in ourselves or in what we may possess. That is, of course, not easy for us. Nevertheless, to place our trust in the Lord is exactly what it means to be His disciple. Psalms perfectly captures the challenge we face and provides the answer to the challenge as well. In Psalms we are told: “Man says to God, ‘Show me and I will trust You.’ And God replies “Trust me and I will show you’.”

Community Meal

This past Tuesday, the Parish hosted our annual BBQ for the downtown community. Sponsored by the 2nd collection, this year we served a record number of over 1,000 meals. People had the opportunity to come down and get a freshly grilled burger with onions, lettuce, & tomato, chili, potato salad, and lemonade. Also present was Catholic Charities, SPS Heart Program, DSHS, Wear Law, Molina Healthcare, All Creatures Veterinary Clinic, and other organizations who provided services to those in need. Parishioners handed out bags with basic necessities & gave out bags of popcorn, which was all sponsored by the generous donations of people like you! Thank you to everyone who volunteered, donated, or otherwise made this event a success!
