through talks given by our youth board members dealing with Christ, our faith, peer pressure, leadership, etc.

Dear Sisters and Brothers,
“I always wanted to learn to read and write, but because I
was a girl, I had to stay at home. My late husband was very clever
and would have made a good accountant. Unfortunately, he was
never able to progress past 6th grade. Even that little education was
only possible because of the small school set up locally by mission-
aries. When my husband and I married, there was no alternative:
we became peasant farmers, just like our parents and grandparents.
We lost our field and our home because a logging consortium took
over all the land in our area. They argued that they had put up no-
tices, but nobody in our village could read. We were defenceless
and lost everything.”
Anji, an elderly widow, is not unusual among the tribal peo-
ples of India. Her story is common. Until recently, Anji had no
recourse to justice. That situation is changing, thanks to Fr P.D.
Mathew SJ and his colleagues at the Centre for Human Rights and
Justice which he established in Vadodara, Gujarat. The Jesuit
priest is also a lawyer. He has travelled the length and breadth of
India, training more than a thousand priests and religious sisters as
paralegals, holding in excess of three thousand workshops, gradu-
ally building up a national pool of advocates for the marginalised
and oppressed indigenous tribal peoples who, according to Govern-
ment statements, do not exist. Always on the move, Fr Mathew is
truly a missionary to his own people, but also to all parts of India,
spreading the message that, in the eyes of God, nobody is poor,
insignificant and unworthy of support. Everybody, without excep-
tion, deserves justice, compassion and dignity.
Today’s Gospel Lesson tells of a poor widow who needed
justice in an unjust situation. Reasonably, she approached a judge
in her search for a fair verdict. Unfortunately, the judge whom she
tackled had no intention of serving the cause of justice. Perhaps if
she had been able to offer a bribe or social advancement, the story
might have been different. Instead, she was poor, a widow, and
had nobody to fight her battles on her behalf. The only weapon in
the widow’s armoury was persistence---which she used to great
effect. Morning, noon and night, she plagued the unjust judge,
giving him no peace and quiet. He soon tired of the constant pes-
tering. Driven, not by concerns for justice, but solely by a desire to
be rid of her, he gave the widow the verdict she deserved. There is
a saying that “whoever thinks little ones have no power has never
been to bed with a mosquito”! The widow was such a mosquito,
but was justice truly served?
In years past, missionaries travelled to uncharted places,
encountered previously unknown peoples and languages, and built
flourishing mission stations, schools and hospitals. St Francis Xa-
vier spoke of his arm aching because of the number of baptisms he
performed in a single day. Today, missionaries are rarely
“explorers in the cause of the Gospel”, because the world has be-
come a global village. Today, missionaries, both at home and
abroad, play a vital role in advocacy for those who are oppressed
and marginalised. Catholic social teaching is based on, and insepa-
rable from, our understanding of human life and human dignity.
Fr Mathew has a constant plea on behalf of all those whom
he trains: “Please pray that they become effective apostles to liber-
ate the oppressed from exploitation, poverty and ignorance.”
Through their thirst for justice, Fr Mathew and the Church in India
work to ensure that Anji and her family will not lose their fields to
greedy politicians and companies. Children will not be denied an
education because of gender or through being born into a marginal-
ised group of people.
On this World Mission Sunday, unlike the unjust judge of
the Gospel, the Church unites in a global outreach to those who are
overlooked by the world around them. Yes, the Church focuses on
providing schools, hospitals and clinics. The urgent needs of par-
ishes, seminaries and dioceses, especially in the developing world,
continue to call upon our resources. More importantly, missionar-
ies such as Fr Mathew continue to work on our behalf, telling “little
ones” that hope, faith, justice, life and love are not reserved for a
select few. Our mission is to tell each and every man, woman and
child that they are precious and honoured in God’s sight. We have
no more important task than to be messengers of our God to a
world that is so desperately in need of love.
In your charity, pray for the sick and the lonely—visit them
if you can. Also, please remember to pray for all who have wan-
dered from the faith, and all who have died. May God always be
pleased with us! -
Monsignor Michael

Dear Friends of St. Ann School,
Remember the first time you gave Holy Communion to someone?
Remember the first time you held your child or even changed the
baby’s diaper. Those moments of total joy and responsibility at
the service of another are our first fervor making it known.
St. Ann School is basically a population of young people who are
experiencing their first fervor in terms of their faith and in terms
of their service as an expression of that faith.
Our oldest, the 8th graders, recently came back from a class
retreat. They spent a beautiful day with their religion teacher,
Mrs. Williams and our school chaplain, Fr. James. In the silence
of adoration, they remembered their first fervors in terms of
praising God. The students did not want to break the holy
silence. They valued the stillness in Christ. But they
remembered a time when they used sign language to sing a song
to the Lord. As the teacher looked around the group, she noticed
many signing the song in absolute silence, their faces all aglow
with love of the Lord and childlike innocence.
Fifteen of our students became Safety Patrols this week. They are
filled with the first fervor of responsibility and service. One
mother reported that her daughter cried half the night because she
was afraid she would not be able to stay after school and take care
of her post. Another mother told me that her son was in pain with
a thumb broken in two places. His biggest concern was whether
or not he would be able to be at his post in the morning. “People
are relying on me,” he told her.
The joy of service can wane as we age. Being around young
people stirs memories of our first times. We remember our first
awareness of God, our first patrol experience, our first school
project, our first realization that we could love and be loved. This
week, hang out with a young person. Allow you to get caught up
in their energy and delight in life and the things of God. As the
parish lunch bunch can testify, the children will feel privileged
that you wanted to spend time with them. They enjoy you as
much as you enjoy them. Our faith community depends on such
interactions.
God bless you,
Sr. Mary Klersey, MPF - Principal
