One great aspect of Christmas every year is the anticipation and the excite-ment that leads up to it. For weeks ahead of time, we go through the annual rituals of cleaning and decorating our homes, of buying and wrapping our gifts, of preparing holiday food and desserts for others. We have one goal in mind in all of this: to be well-prepared for the moment in which we will gratefully receive the Lord Jesus at His birth. We are currently on our journey through the holy season of Advent. We have now a tremendously rewarding opportunity: that, as we put great effort into prepar-ing our homes for Christmas, we might be even more diligent in our spiritual prepara-tion for Christ's birth. As we clean and decorate our homes, Advent offers us a sacred time for the cleansing of the "home" of our souls and for adorning them with God's redeeming grace. Hopefully, we have accepted this Advent season as God's personal gift to us and are observing it well. As Advent gives way to Christmas in merely a few short days, may we truly experience that "Joy to the World" which the Lord Jesus gives us by His birth! ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Adviento — Un Mensaje del Párroco Un gran aspecto en Navidad de cada año es la anticipación y la excitación que tenemos por ella. Por semanas antes de Navidad, nosotros estamos realizando los ri-tuales de limpiar y decorar nuestros hogares; comprando y envolviendo nuestros rega-los, preparando la comida y postres para otros. Nosotros tenemos tan solo una meta en nuestras mentes: estar preparados para el momento en que nosotros recibimos agradecidamente al Señor Jesús en el momento de su nacimiento.

Actualmente estamos en la temporada de Adviento. Nosotros ahora tenemos la gran oportunidad de preparar nuestros hogares para la Navidad y aún más es la pre-paración espiritual por el nacimiento de Cristo. Así como nosotros limpiamos nuestra casa el tiempo de Adviento nos ofrece un tiempo para limpiar nuestras almas y para adornarlas con la gracia de Dios.

Esperanzados esperamos que todos nosotros aceptemos y observado este regalo de Dios en la temporada de Adviento. Como el tiempo de Adviento nos da la Navidad por unos cuantos días; le pedimos a Dios que realmente expe-rimentemos el “Joy to the World” el cual el Señor Jesús nos da en su nacimiento.

My Dear Parishioners,

The Gospels describe Saint John the Baptist as “a voice crying out in the wilderness.” Under

his patronage, our parish has been a vital part of this community for over a century. Our beautiful

church is a true landmark of the City of Hot Springs. We have much to celebrate, to be proud of and

grateful for.

With this newsletter, we begin a new era. “The Voice” will be our way of highlighting various

aspects and events of our parish life. We will celebrate as a single family our common Catholic experi-

ence.

One of our greatest blessings is the rich diversity of our parish family. The closer our ethnic

communities draw toward one another, the more we benefit from the presence of each other and the

more we truly become “one,” as we claim each Sunday in our Profession of Faith. Therefore, this news-

letter, like our newly-revised weekly bulletin, will be a bilingual publication.

As we approach the celebration of Our Divine Savior’s birth, allow me to express to you my

great joy in serving as your pastor. May God bless each of you and grant to you a most blessed and

Mis Estimados Parroquianos:

Los evangelios describen a San Juan Bautista como “una voz que llora en el desierto”. Deba-

jo de su protección patronal, nuestra parroquia ha sido y sigue siendo una parte vital en esta comuni-

dad por más de un centenario. Nuestra hermosa Iglesia es realmente una marca verdadera de la Ciu-

dad de Hot Springs. Nosotros tenemos mucho por celebrar, orgullecernos y de agradecer.

Con este periódico; nosotros empezamos una nueva era. “La Voz” será nuestra forma de

cómo sobresaltar varios aspectos y eventos de la vida de nuestra parroquia. Nosotros estaremos cele-

brando como una familia nuestra experiencia común como católicos.

Una de nuestras grandes bendiciones en nuestra parroquia es la rica diversidad de familias.

Cuanto más cerca este nuestra comunidad étnica es cuando nosotros más nos beneficiaremos de la

presencia una de la otra y es cuando nos convertiremos en “una”. Y es así como nosotros cada Domin-

go proclamamos nuestra Profesión de Fe. Es por ello que este periódico será bilingüe como lo es nues-

tro boletín semanal.

En aproximación a la celebración del nacimiento de nuestro divino Salvador, yo les deseo

expresar mi gran gozo de servirles como pastor. ¡Que Dios los bendiga a cada uno de ustedes, y que

St. John’s Catholic School News!!! Sierra Voglewede, a sixth grader in Mrs. Donna Kent’s reading and writ-ing class at St. John’s Catholic School, recently won a statewide essay contest sponsored by the Catholic Daughters of America. After winning at the local level, Sierra advanced to the state competition, where she captured first place with her essay “How My Life is a Reflection of Good.”

“A Family that Prays together stays together” To my fellow parishioners

During mass we come together as a family to pray, but how well do we really know our fellow parishioners? Our goal is to unite our parish to become a stronger family, and thus build a closer community. There are many ways we hope to reach our goal, but we will need your help. The parish council has been hard at work trying to develop ways to foster community. Some of these ideas involve initiating small faith forma-

tion groups, forming new ministries, and building a nursery. Communication is a necessity in any family. An upcoming survey will be your way to express any ideas that you might have to help us. This newsletter is our way to communicate with all of you.

Please be praying that God will help guide us on this quest to become a stronger church family. Remember we will need all of YOU to help us to

“Familia que rezan juntas se mantienen juntas”

Para nuestra Parroquia este es un tiempo muy excitante.

Durante la Misa; nosotros venimos todos juntos a rezar como una sola familia, pero ¿qué tan bien nos conocemos unos a otros? Cada Parro-

quia debe ser una familia fuerte y una comunidad unida. El consejo de la Parroquia está desarrollando formas de ver como tener a nuestra comunidad unida

como una sola familia. En el futuro; La Iglesia San Juan Bautista estará iniciando pequeños grupos de formación de fe guiados por nuestro párroco. Estare-

mos estableciendo nuevos ministerios lo cual permitirá a que nuestra parroquia crezca más unida mientras servimos al Señor. Nosotros estaremos abrien-

do una guardería infantil para familias con niños pequeños. ¡Estén pendientes de mayor información que se les estará dando en el futuro! Como la comuni-

cación es vital en toda familia. Muy pronto estaremos realizando una encuesta para poder tener sus sugerencias para así mejorar nuestra familia en la

parroquia. ¡Y la “Voz” es tan solo la una de las primeras cosas por venir!

Por favor unámonos en oración para que Dios nos guie en esta nueva jornada. San Pablo nos ensena que nosotros somos muchos miembros

La Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe

El 9 de Diciembre de 1531 en el monte de Tepeyac nuestra Bendita Madre se apareció a Juan Diego; indio de Azteca. Cuando estaba yendo a atender a Misa el escucho el canto de pajari-tos y una música hermosa. Luego escucho una voz que lo llamaba. Y es cuando ella se rebeló a Juan Diego como “La Virgen Madre del Dios verdadero” y le pidió su deseo de construir una capilla para que la gente sea testigo de su amor, compasión y protección. Ella mando a Juan Diego a que hablara con el Obispo en la Ciudad de México para darle a conocer su gran deseo. EL Obispo no le hizo caso al indio sin siquiera darle atención a su historia. Dos veces más se le apareció la Virgen María a Diego pidiéndoles que le dé el mensaje al obispo. Él lo hizo exacta-mente como ella pidió y finalmente el obispo le pidió a Juan que la Virgen María le diera una señal. El 12 de Diciembre la Virgen se apareció a Juan por cuarta vez. Ella le pidió a Juan que recogiera rosas de castilla ubicadas en una montaña rocosa. Cuando Juan hizo esto ella puso las rosas en la tilma (tela) de Juan y le pidió que lo llevara al obispo. Cuando Juan abrió su tilma en frente del obispo ahí estuvo la bella imagen de nuestra Se-ñora de Guadalupe exactamente como se le aparecía a Juan. El obispo se arrodillo ante la imagen y rápidamente luego de esto empezaron a construir la Iglesia en el monte de Tepeyac. Actualmente todavía se puede ver esta tilma con la imagen la cual está detrás del altar en la Basílica de nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Millones de mexicanos y de todas partes del mundo van a la Basílica a venerarla y para implorar su intercesión.

The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

At dawn on December 9, 1531, on Tepeyac Hill near Mexico City, Our Blessed Lady ap-peared to Juan Diego, an Aztec Indian (canonized on July 31, 2002, as Saint Juan Diego by Pope John Paul II). While on his way to attend mass he heard sounds of chirping birds and beautiful music, wondering where it was coming from and its meaning. Then he heard a voice calling him. There she revealed herself to him as "the Ever Virgin Mother of the True God," and made known her desire that a Shrine be built there to bear witness to her love, her compassion, and her protection. She sent him to Bishop Juan de Zumarraga in Mexico City to request her great desire. The Bishop dismissed the humble Indian without paying attention to his story. Two more times Our Lady appeared to Juan, requesting him to deliver the same favor. He did as she asked and finally the Bishop asked for a sign. So, Juan reported this to her and she promised to grant a sign the following morning. On December 12, Our Lady appeared to him for the fourth time and told him to gather fresh roses from the top of the hill. This done, she arranged the roses in his cloak and he returned to the Bishop, giving him an account of their origin. To the Bishop's amazement, when Juan opened up his cloak before him there was found upon it the miraculous beautiful image of Our Lady . The Bishop prostrated himself in veneration and soon after began the building of the Shrine on the top of Mount Tepeyac. Juan Diego's cloak, marvelously preserved, can still be seen in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Millions from all over the world make their way to venerate Our Blessed Mother and to implore her intercession.
