TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Often, when a family keeps vigil around a person who is preparing for death, they may notice three interwoven ac-tivities. First, the dying person may become more prayerful and reflective than ever before, reviewing life’s journey in gratitude to God, or seeking forgiveness and making amends for wrongs. Second, as death approaches, the need to eat and drink is lessened until even an ice cube brushed against the lips is satisfying. Third, persons who are dying often make plans to give their possessions away, making bequests, handing treasures down, providing for favorite charities. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving: with these three “pillars” of Lent, we rehearse our death every year in this season, and anticipate the final work we will do in this life. And every year, at the end of our journey, is the joy of Easter and the experience of the victory of Christ over death’s darkness and power. Annually, we remind ourselves that the Christian experiences the same power and presence at the end of life’s journey: Christ to the rescue and the lasting joy of heaven. —James Field, Copyright © J. Frst Sunday of Lent

Nativity Information

From Father Robert’s Desk -

Stations of the Cross (also called Way of the Cross, Via Crucis, Via Dolorosa or Way of Sorrows) The object of the Stations is to help the faithful make a spiritual pilgrimage of prayer, through meditating upon the chief scenes of Christ’s suffering and death. It has become one of the most popular devotions for Roman Catholics. It is often performed in a spirit of reparation for the suffering and insults that Jesus endured during His Passion. A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who make this pious exercise of the Stations of the Cross. This devotion evolved over time. Tradition holds that our Blessed Mother visited daily the scenes of our Lord’s passion. After Constantine legalized Christianity in 312, this pathway was marked with its important stations. In the 5th century, an interest developed in the Church to “reproduce” the holy places in other areas so pilgrims who could not actually travel to the Holy Land could do so in a devotional, spiritual way in their hearts. In 1342, the Franciscans were appointed guardians of the shrines of the Holy Land. The Franciscans have been closely identified with this devotion ever since and for years Church regulations required a set of the stations to be blessed by a Franciscan when possible. The term “stations” in describing the Way of the Cross was first used in the narrative of an English pilgrim, William Wey, who visited the Holy Land twice in the 15th century. The devotion grew in popularity in Europe and in 1584 a book written by Adrichomius gives 12 stations, which match those in our present version. Devotional books appeared in the 16th century, which had 14 stations with prayers for each one. At the end of 17th century, the erection of stations in churches became more popular. In 1686, Pope Innocent XI, realizing that few people could travel to the Holy Land due to the Moslem oppression, granted the right to erect stations in all of their churches. The same indulgences would be given to the Franciscans and those affiliated with them for practicing the devotion as if on an actual pilgrimage. Pope Benedict XIII extended these indulgences to all the faithful in 1726. Five years later, Pope Clement XII permitted stations to be created in all churches and fixed the number at 14. In 1742, Pope Benedict XIV exhorted all priests to enrich their churches with the Way of the Cross, which must include 14 crosses and are usually accompanied with pictures or images of each particular station. Several devotional booklets now include a 15th station, commemorating the Resurrection of our Lord and the relationship with His passion and death. St. Alphonsus Ligouri in 1787 wrote the version of the Stations that most Americans recognize because it was used in most U.S. churches throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. It has become standard for Catholic churches in this country to recite the prayers related to the Stations on the Fridays of Lent. Some Protestant churches have also made this devotion part of their Lenten activities, particularly on Good Friday. Brothers and Sisters, we can obey Christ’s injunction to take up our cross and follow Him. We can receive abundant spiritual graces by publicly or privately praying the Stations of the Cross. Please do not waste this time. And please join me in Church on Fridays during Lent at 6:30pm as we journey together on this pilgrimage.

Church of the Nativity is sponsoring it's next blood drive on March 10th following 10:30 Mass from noon until 3:00 pm. It is our hope to replace some of the more than 20 units of blood that have been used by one of Nativity's own long-time parishioners. Vitalant is struggling to meet the demands of a very large area that they serve and the blood bank shelves have been under-filled since the holiday season. If you weigh at least 110 pounds and are in good health, you may be eligible to donate. Appointments will be scheduled after all masses this weekend. Call Janet at 901-652-5475 for more info. Give blood. Give life.

Altar Flower Dedication During the Lenten season there will be no Altar flower dedications. The next weekend available for dedication is April 27th/28th.

ABSTINENCE Abstinence is a penitential practice consisting of refraining from the consumption of meat and is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence. Pastors and parents are encouraged to see that children who are not bound by the obligation to fast and abstain are led to appreciate an authentic sense of penance. FAST & ABSTINENCE In addition to abstinence, fasting is to be observed by all Catholics be-tween the ages of 18 and 59 years (inclusive) On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Note: Those who are unable to ob-serve the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable to their condition.

ALMSGIVING, PRAYER, FASTING, AND TEMPTATION As we begin our season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, the reading from Deuteronomy reminds us of our duty of alms-giving, that we “set [our offerings] before the Lord, [our] God, [and] shall bow down in [God’s] presence” (Deuteronomy 26:10). The reading from Romans refers us to our prayer, re-minding us that “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart . . . For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:8, 13). These are comforting words, and encourage us to ask God for what we need and to aid us in our prayer. Finally, the Gospel of Luke shows us a fasting Jesus, who was tempted as we are, and who knows what it means to be human. Someone once said that temptation arises when you’re tired and weary, and the devil comes along and makes a per-fectly reasonable suggestion. Jesus shows us that, with his help, we too can overcome our temptations, reasonable as they may sound. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

For many of us, the cardboard bowl for collecting Lenten alms is as much as sign of Lent as ashes on your forehead. But how did Operation Rice Bowl start? The program began in 1975 in parishes in Allentown, PA, as a response to famine in Africa. In 1976, Operation Rice Bowl was adopted by the United State Conference of Catholic Bishops as a national program and became the official program of Catholic Relief Services (CRS) a year later. In its first 40 years, more than $250 million has been given through CRS Rice Bowl to support programs that prevent hunger and poverty around the world. In the Catholic Diocese of Memphis, 25 percent of all money col-lected comes to Catholic Charities of West Tennessee to benefit our food pantry and food distribution programs. As you give alms during Lent, please consider that one in four Memphians lives in poverty. May God bless you for your generosity.

To All Ministry Leaders and Nativity Groups: We are a growing and vibrant Parish Community and I ask this special request of you. Please remember that we are a family of worship and share our God given gifts and church space to-gether. And as we continually grow in our ministries, I ask that group leaders please submit your yearly calen-dar by email or in writing to Angie O’Neill . We have limited meeting spaces that fill up very quickly and it is most appreciated if all will communicate by email with angie.oneill @nativity.cdom.org for scheduling all events. The Office Calendar is the Official Church Calendar. If there are conflicts in dates and times, we hope all of you are willing to work together to coordinate usage of our building and grounds. Thank you for your patience and understanding and for working together as a very large and faithful family. May God continue to bless each of us and the work we do as The Catholic Church of the Nativity. Fr. Robert
