THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD JANUARY 6, 2019

FROM FATHER MICHAEL: The Feast of the Epiphany commemorates the manifes-

tation of the glory of Christ to the Gentiles in the person

of the Magi, as well as His Baptism and first miracle at

Cana. Originating in the Eastern Church in the 3rd cen-

tury, it soon spread to the West, where it is now com-

memorated especially for the appearance to the Magi.

In England and many European countries it is popularly

known as Twelfth Night (after Christmas) and is the oc-

casion for the revival of numerous quaint customs. The

feast is a holy day of obligation in England, Scotland,

and Ireland.

How can we celebrate Epiphany? Here are a few sug-

gestions:

1. Have a family "undecorating" party on January 6.

Spend the day taking down the tree and other holiday

trimmings at a leisurely pace.

2. Prepare a quiet dinner afterward and discuss what

you liked about this Christmas season and what you

might want to do differently next year. (Think of it as

"thinking out loud" time, though - not as a planning ses-

sion.)

3. Decorate a "king's crown" to serve for dessert. It's a

traditional Epiphany cake with a trinket baked inside it.

Whoever gets the piece with the trinket reigns as king

or queen of the feast and gets to order everyone else

around.

Celebrate that the Light of Christ has entered our world

in a new way.

Questions of the Week:

Adults: When have you been jealous or fearful of

another person? When are such feelings harmful?

Children: When have you been jealous because

something good happened to another person in-

stead of you? What is the problem with feeling

that way?

_______ Just for Laughs ____________ There was an elderly lady, who every morning

stepped onto her front porch, raised her arms to the

sky, and shouted, “Praise the Lord!” One day an athe-

ist moved into the house next door. He became irritat-

ed at the elderly lady. Every morning he’d step onto

his front porch after her and yell, “There is no

Lord!” Time passed with the two of them carrying on

this way every day. One morning, in the middle of the

winter, the elderly lady stepped onto her front porch

and shouted, “Praise the Lord! Please, Lord I have no

food and I am starving, provide for me, O,

Lord!” The next morning she stepped onto her porch

and there were two huge bags of groceries sitting

there. “Praise the Lord!” she cried out. “He has pro-

vided groceries for me!” The atheist neighbor jumped

out of the hedges and shouted, “There is no Lord. I

bought those groceries!!” The elderly lady threw her

arms into the air and shouted, “Praise the Lord! He

has provided me with groceries and made the devil

pay for them!”

The Three Wise Men, also known as the Three Kings or the Magi, were Caspar, Melchior and Bal-thazar. In the Bible, they presented gifts to Jesus soon after his birth. The Three Wise Men all came from lands east of Jerusalem after seeing a special star in the sky that indicated the birth of a special king. When they found Jesus in Bethlehem, the three gifts that they offered were gold, frankincense and myrrh. Schol-ars believe that gold is either a simple valuable or a symbol of kingship. Frankincense is either plain perfume or a representation of deity. Myrrh is ei-ther an embalming ointment or a symbol for mor-tality.

August Schaefer, OSB, and Deacon Duane

Karmazin, will direct this retreat. The schedule

includes brief conferences, silence, Mass, Confes-

sion, fellowship and spiritual direction. Open to all
