Since being appointed as pastoral
leader of Ss. Peter & Paul in 2008 by Bishop
Ricken (and subsequently appointed to Holy
Rosary and St. Ann in 2011), I have prayed in
the sanctuary during Mass standing next to
the priest, wearing an alb. But within the last
year I began to ask myself “Why?” I also be-
gan to pray with this same question.
Furthermore, there have been numerous
times where people have called me “Father”
or “Deacon” because of where I am praying
and what I am wearing. And to confuse the
faithful in that way is certainly not my intent.
So I think this is a good time to talk
about roles. The role of the priest is not only
to preside at Eucharist, but also to do so In
Persona Christi (in the person of Christ). This
is especially true as the priest asks God to
send the Holy Spirit on the gifts of bread and
wine. At that time, we are at the Last Supper,
gathered around the table in the presence of
Christ and, by the grace of God, receive the
very bread the disciples did that evening. No
one else can do that but an ordained priest.
The Deacon (such as Pat Knier) is
ordained for the Word and service. It is his
job to proclaim the Gospel at Mass. If Pope
Francis himself were to preside at Eucharist at
one of our three parishes, if Pat was present, he
would proclaim the Gospel. That’s his role.
Not mine.
So what is our role as Laity? It’s nothing
less than to evangelize the world. We are to
take what we receive from the Word, and to
take what we receive from the Altar, and
bring it with us wherever we go, building the
Kingdom of God. As Francis said just recently,
“The clock has stopped on the hour of the la-
ity.” This is our time and our task.
So what does this mean for me? It
means from this weekend on, I will no longer
wear an alb during normal Sunday Eucharist –
but instead will sit alongside you in the pews.
Why? Because I’m lay just like you. And I’m
proud of that!
I want to minimize confusion, but also
show unity. I suspect that at times, sitting up in
the sanctuary and wearing different garb can
have a separating effect, and that is not my
intent. Finally, by sitting in your midst and
continuing to live my calling as pastoral
leader, I hope that it challenges all of you to
ask how God is inviting you to evangelize the
world and build His kingdom.
I do not do this because Bishop Ricken
or anyone else asked me. This is not any sort
of sign that I am leaving. My role as pastoral
leader has not changed in any way. This is
simply the fruit of prayer and conversation –
and through it, I wish to confuse less, show
unity more and challenge us all. Thanks for
listening.

Weekly Reflections by Joseph Zenk, Pastoral Leader
Readings for the Week
Monday Gal 1:6-12/Lk 10:25-37
Tuesday Gal 1:13-24/Lk 10:38-42
Wednesday Gal 2:1-2, 7-14/Lk 11:1-4
Thursday Gal 3:1-5/Lk 11:5-13
Friday Gal 3:7-14/Lk 11:15-26
Saturday Gal 3:22-29/Lk 11:27-2
Sunday 2 Kgs 5:14-17/2 Tm 2:8-13/Lk 17:11-19
Join us next week as our readings’ focus is: “Faith in the midst of adversity fortifies the soul.” When things are going well, it is easy to believe in a loving God. In the midst of adversity, believing can be more difficult. Next week witness the strong faith of Naaman, Saint Paul speaking from prison, and the leper who was a Samaritan. All three are good role models for us in times of difficulty.
Natural Family Planning Group
The NFP Women’s Group will be meeting at Elizabeth Ministry Retreat and Resource Center at 120 W 8th St, Kaukauna on Saturday, October 8th, at 10:00 - 11:00 am. This is a group for new and seasoned users of NFP to come, hang out, ask questions, receive support, and make friends with others who use Natural Family Planning too. Come have coffee or tea, relax on our couches, and give and receive encouragement! The group is free and open to users of all methods. Please email April for questions [email protected]. We hope you’ll join us.
Keep in Prayer
Please keep in prayer all priests and pastoral leaders of the diocese who will be meeting this Monday through Wednesday at the Clergy Congress in Manitowoc.

Election Prayer for Life
In all of our parish entryway areas, you’ll find an Election Prayer for Life. Please take a copy and keep the election in prayer as we rapidly approach November.
Prayer & Worship Meeting
Members of our three linked prayer and worship committees are reminded of our meeting this Tuesday, October 4, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Ss. Peter & Paul in the parish center.
Email Bible Study
Are you interested in being part of a bible study – but don’t have the time to meet weekly? Check this out…
This fall, we will have a six-week study on the books of Ruth and Esther. Every week, beginning the week of October 10, Joe Zenk will send out the assigned reading for that week along with a number of questions for you to answer on your own. You won’t have to share them with anyone else as they are for your own spiritual growth. Then, at the end of the six weeks, the group is invited together to discuss their thoughts from the books we’ve read. Don’t want to come to these gatherings? You don’t have to. It’s that easy.
Interested? Sign up through Kim, Laura or Sue in our parish offices. Either call or send them an email. Look for your first email assignment the week of October 10.
7 Steps to a Superabundant Marriage
Couples – would you describe your marriage as supera-bundant? Mark your calendars. Our new marriage min-istry, The Choice Wine, will begin on Friday, October 14. This nine session (once a month) program will teach couples 7 Steps to an Abundant Marriage. Integrating the latest findings from modern science with the time-lessness of our faith and the wisdom of the saints, The Choice Wine places authentic marital happiness within every couples grasp. God is profoundly present in mar-riage and family life. An encounter with Him leads to a life of true superabundance. Cost is $20 per couple. Contact any one of our parish offices to register or for more information.
Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help
Fr. Ubald Rugirangogo from Rwanda will be celebrating a Healing Mass on October 2 and October 29, both at 1:00 pm. Father is a miraculous survivor of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. After losing his family and thousands of parish-ioners, he found peace through forgiveness and is blessed with the gift of understanding what God has healed. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available.
Mass Intentions
In recent years, our parishes have not been able to accept as many Mass intentions as in earlier years. However, there are other options for you to remember your deceased loved ones through a Mass intention. Many retired priests in our diocese, as well as priests in mission areas, would be happy to pray for your intention at Masses they celebrate. You may contact your parish office to make these arrangements. The offering/stipend for a Mass is $10.
Can You Help?
Would someone out there want to help a lady this win-ter by using her snowblower to clean off a driveway and side walk while earning extra cash? It's on the west side of Kiel on 7th street. contact Deacon Pat at 920-894-3553.
Mass of Anointing
The three linked parishes of Ss. Peter & Paul, St. Ann and Holy Rosary will be having a Mass of Anointing on Thursday, October 13, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Ss. Pe-ter & Paul. This is a wonderful opportunity for those who struggle with serious illness in their life. If you struggle with a serious illness of any kind, please come to this sacrament of healing. In preparation, please sign up on the vestibule of any of our three linked parishes. We will have nametags prepared for those planning to receive the Sacrament. While signing up in advance is helpful, you are more than welcome to join us in prayer that evening even without signing up.

Achieving Academic Excellence.......This key phrase of the school's mission statement is stressed daily through the expectations teachers have of their students. Teachers meet weekly on an individual basis with each student to review work of the previous week and set goals for the upcoming week. They utilize the standardized testing assessment (MAP - Measure of Academic Progress) as a launching point to set goals and work toward attainment of learning targets. Utilizing a program called Study Island, teachers and students target areas of an individual learning path that is generated utilizing the MAP assessment data. Testing is done three times each year to monitor learning progress.

Hold in Prayer
Please keep in prayer BreeAnn Mueller & Dan Schlenske, who will be united in Holy Matrimony this coming Saturday, October 8. May their “yes” to one another, and to God’s mission to love, grow every day.
Louisiana Flood Relief Collection
Our prayers go out to all those who experienced nature’s fury recently in Louisiana. If you’d still like to contribute to the relief fund, there are envelopes available at the side entrances of church. Drop them in the collection baskets or they can be brought to the office. Thank you!
Pantry Collection
For the month of October, we are collecting feminine hygiene products for the Rays of Hope Pantry across the street. Your donations to help stock the shelves are very much appreciated. Cemetery Reminder
Fall cleanup begins soon. Please remove all spring and summer artificial arrangements by October 10. Those remaining will be disposed of. Thank you.
Construction Updates
We were blessed this week with fair enough weather to safely install our beautiful rose window in its new place—an awesome symbol of our faith, visible to all who pass by outside or enter God's House inside.
Our building project is progressing on schedule. Many finishing touches will be apparent during the upcoming month. Please follow the local weekly newspaper for the story details and photos of our new space.
Reminder: Areas beyond the rear wall of the church nave are still part of the construction zone and remain off limits to human traffic flow (except in a fire emergency) until all work is completed and equipment, materials, and caution tape is removed permanently. There will eventually be tours and celebrations between November and January. Thank you for your continued cooperation.
Happy Birthday Ten of our ‘senior parishioners’ are celebrating their birthdays in the month of October. They include: James Schneider (5), Marilyn Goodrich (6), Donald Vorpahl (9), Carol Orth (9) Alice Sabel (13), Luella Vorpahl (13), Bernard Schweitzer (20), Nathalie Fabrizio (21), Stella Hoefler (27) and Angeline Schuh (28).
