ST. BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX CHURCH BRADFORD, PA CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF BRADFORD MAY 27, 2018

Today, as we observe the Feast of the Holy Trinity, we celebrate the greatest mystery of our faith after the Incarnation. The more we try to explain it, the more we become confused; for there are no words that can truly explain what it means. Saint Patrick uses the simple clover to try to illustrate the Holy Trinity. The stem is God and the three petals reflect the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. All one and all equal. The word, Trinity, is a theological term trying to explain the Mystery.

One day, Saint Thomas Aquinas was contemplating the Mystery of the Trinity, and he came upon a small boy trying to fill a small hole in the sand with water. Saint Thomas asked the boy what he was doing. The boy replied that he was putting the ocean into the hole. Saint Thomas said that this was impossible. To his amazement the boy replied: “That is the same as what you are trying to comprehend

- the Mystery of the Trinity” and then the boy disappeared before his eyes.

It is a mystery to be believed and lived out. Like Saint Thomas we cannot put our minds or our arms around it. Jesus, Himself, introduces us to the concept of Trinity. If we listen to His words in the Gospel. The people of His time had the same difficulty trying to understand it and accept it. That is why many of them called Jesus a heretic. That is also one of the crimes that Jesus was accused of and caused Him His death.

Jesus says so many times in the Gospels: “He who sees Me, sees the Father” and other times He says: “I must return to the Father in order to prepare a place for you.” The most striking one is: “The Father and I are One and He who sees Me sees the Father.” Then, in reference to the Holy Spirit, Jesus says: “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, which the Father will send in my name — He will teach you everything and remind you of all that I have told you.”

Food for thought: I want you to reflect, for a few minutes, on a simple action that we do every time we enter church. We do this so often we may take it for granted. We dip our hands into the Holy Water fount and then bless ourselves. Take a minute and think what does this mean? The holy water reminds us of our Baptism which puts us into a personal relationship with our God and gives us access to church. The saying of the words: In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit reminds us of our belief in the Trinity. The action of blessing ourselves in the form of a cross reminds us that we have been saved through the loving action of Jesus who died and rose again.

The main thing we need to remember is that as often as we speak of Jesus, where He is there is also the Father, and the Holy Spirit. In conclusion, let us remember the words of Jesus: “God is love and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.”

God Bless, Fr. Ray

THE MOST HOLY TRINITY SUNDAY MAY 27, 2018

MEMORIAL DAY PRAYER

Dear Lord,

On this day, we remember those

who have served us by protecting our freedoms.

When we celebrate our long weekend

with our friends and family, help us remember,

that our freedom to speak of you,

and our freedom to worship you,

and our freedom to do that which we ought to do,

have all been bought at the price and sacrifice

of many lives.

Your Son died for our eternal life in heaven.

So too, your children died protecting us here on

earth.

Help us be mindful this weekend and always

of the sacrifices made by those in uniform

for all our freedoms.

Amen.
