Day by Day with St Augustine—The Anxiety of the Avaricious

Avarice requires of us exhausting efforts, dangerous adventures, bothersome trials, tribulations, which

we endure. To accomplish what? That you may have the gold to fill your bank account, lose your

freedom, and gain anxiety. You were probably more free when you were a “have not” than when you

became one of the “haves”. You have filled your house with your wealth and now robbers are feared.

You have acquired gold; you have lost sleep. Avarice commands us to “do this!” and we do it. God’s

only command is that we love him. “You seek gold but perhaps you will never find it. If you seek me, I will come to

you. Who has ever really loved me and has not gained me?”- Commentary on the Epistle of John, 10.4.1

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

‘You also must be ready’ - Luke 12-40

At school How can I be better at

seeing what people need,

being ready to help?

At work or study Being ready means being

awake and aware of…..?

In my family life Have we a plan in our

family to remind ourselves

of what really matters?

Words for this week—

Repeat frequently with love

‘Jesus blessed are you, friend and guide.

WARNING! Bible usage can be HABIT forming! Regular reading can cause loss of anxiety and fear, decreased appetite for lying, cheating, stealing, hating, anger and envy. SYMPTOMS include: increased sensation of love, joy, peace, compassion and contentment. IF SYMPTOMS PERSIST, just praise the Lord!

Episcopal Dialogue 2013

Bishop David Walker and

Bishop Glenn Davies, Bishop

of North Sydney, Assistant

Bishop in the Anglican Diocese

of Sydney will, as usual,

engage in an Episcopal Dialogue this year. The

topic is:

“In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty;

in all things, charity’ (St Augustine). What

would you say are the three essential beliefs in

order to be a Christian?”

The evening will be held at St John’s Anglican

Church, cnr St Johns Ave and Pacific Hwy,

Gordon on Tuesday 13th August 7.30-9.00pm.

After the recent Parish Pastoral Assembly your parish leadership team is ready to take up the challenge of some major tasks. We hope that the illustrated Parish Annual Report was well received. There are still copies to be had in the churches or through the parish office.

At the time of the Assembly we were proud to have elected on to Council three new members representing different backgrounds and interests from within our community. Gai Hamer is well known to many at St. Cecilia’s as an active and long-term parishioner; Tim Galt, as a young parent from St. Cecilia’s School represents the many young families in that school and worshiping community; and Marissa Lai Kwon from St. Kieran’s brings the perspective of a young working person to the thinking of Council. Our new members will attend our next meeting and retreat day in the coming weeks and be formally inducted into their roles. We congratulate them and look forward to welcoming them as active members of Council.

The other major issues impacting upon our community at present are the renovations at St. Kieran’s for which we are now awaiting the outcome of a development application from Warringah Council, and the soon to be advertised position of Pastoral Associate, the role previously occupied by Sr. Josie Mabini until May last year. Fr. Brian

From Fr. Brian

I implore You, God, You to Whom faith calls us, hope leads us, and love unites us. Come

to me in Your mercy..

A donation envelope for the first Charitable Works Fund (CWF) collection for this financial year should be attached to this bulletin, if not envelopes are always available in the Church foyer. The CWF is a centralised fund for the support of charitable and pastoral activities of the Diocese that extend beyond the limits of any single parish. The funds are raised by bequests, public donations and parish

quotas. There are three CWF collections in the parish each year to enable us to raise funds towards our quota. Donations to the CWF are fully tax deductible. The money raised by the CWF is used to support many charitable organisations in the Diocese including the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, St Lucy’s School, St Edmond’s School, Ephphata Centre and Centrecare Broken Bay. Saturday September 7 is shaping up to be a big day at St Kieran’s. The parish centre will be a federal polling station while the school and car park will be the site of the Family Fun Day, the major fundraiser for the school for the year. Needless to say there is going to be some organising to do over the next 4 weeks. We will keep you up to date with any disruptions to parish life in the lead up to the day. Chris Burrows
