TODAY’S GOSPEL MESSAGE Sunday, November 5th
Matthew 23:1-12
“Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying, ‘The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses. Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice.’”
“The scribes and Pharisees rely on titles (Rabbi, teacher, father, Master) and trappings (wider phylacteries, longer tassels) to guarantee by custom a respect they no longer command by example. Do we do what God asks of us, or do we only pay lip service to God’s commands?” Source: Pastoral Patterns (Autumn 2017)

WELCOME
THE DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA
Feast Day: November 9th
On Thursday, November 9, “the Church celebrates the feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome, the oldest and highest ranking of the four major basilicas in Rome. The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the cathedral of the diocese of Rome, the official ecclesiastical seat of the Holy Father, the Bishop of Rome, not St. Peter's Basilica as so many mistakenly believe. The Basilica is also called the Church of Holy Savior or the Church of St. John Baptist. In ancient Rome this was the church where everyone was baptized. It the oldest church in the West, built in the time of Constantine and was consecrated by Pope Sylvester in 324.
Initially the observance of this feast was confined to the city of Rome; then, beginning in 1565, it was extended to all the Churches of the Roman rite. The honoring of this sacred edifice was a way of expressing love and veneration for the Roman Church, which, as St. Ignatius of Antioch says, “presides in charity” over the whole Catholic communion (Letter to the Romans, 1:1).” Source: www.catholicculture.org
Pope Francis’ Prayer Intention for November:
Christians in Asia
“That Christians in Asia, bearing witness to the Gospel in word and deed,
may promote dialogue, peace, and mutual understanding,
especially with those of other religions.”

Election Day: Tuesday, November 7th
Interesting fact…
“Why are elections held on Tuesday?
In 1845, the United States was largely an agrarian society. Farmers often needed a full day to travel by horse-drawn vehicles to the county seat to vote. Tuesday was established as election day because it did not interfere with the Biblical Sabbath or with market day, which was on Wednesday in many towns.”
