    From Father Larry Adams

As the Christmas season comes to a close and “Ordinary Time” begins anew, there are a few notes that we’d like to mention:

    • We’re busy finishing the recording of 2020 contributions to our parish. We expect to complete this task in the upcoming week or two. Some contributors like to receive an accounting of their donations in the past calendar year. If you’d like us to send you such a report of your annual giving totals, please send us an email at [email protected] or call our parish office at 412-373-0050. We’d like to suggest that we send you this report via email, but if you’re unable to receive an email, please let us know!

    • This past Monday, the temporary measures meant to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in Pennsylvania expired. At this point, we’re still waiting to see whether any additional guidance – whether from diocesan or civil authorities – will be forthcoming. In the meantime, and until other directions are given to us, we’ll continue with the policies already in place:

All those who attend our Masses – clergy, lay ministers, and those in the congregation – must wear masks while on our parish grounds. For those who are unable to wear masks, we recommend that you participate in our Masses via our livestream media (at our website and Facebook pages).

Livestreaming of Sunday Masses at 9am and 11am will continue. Social distancing continues to be in effect – six feet between people from different households. Our meeting rooms and halls will continue to be closed for non-liturgical uses (meetings, events,

etc). Our “Save-a-seat” system will continue to be utilized to ensure that you might be assured that you

can reserve your seat at our weekend Masses. • At the beginning of the year, many people decide on “New Year’s Resolutions” for the upcoming year.

We’d like to suggest that you consider making a commitment to reading Scripture in the new year. In particular, we’d like to suggest that you consider participating in the “Read the Bible in a Year” podcasts of Fr Mike Schmitz from Ascension Press. On our website, you will find links to sign up for these podcasts. Each podcast is short – just 20 minutes! – and at each one, a chapter or two of Scripture is read aloud, and Fr Mike prays and offers his remarks on the day’s Scripture reading.

    • We’d also like to provide an opportunity for us here at Christ the Divine Shepherd Parish to meet and discuss the readings in these podcasts. We’d like to learn what you’d like us to put in place for you – a weekly video-conference call, in-person meetings (once we’re able to support these gatherings), an online blog or forum for group discussion? We’d like to set up a Zoom meeting at which you can share your suggestions and we can decide on how we’ll proceed. If you’re interested in participating in this Zoom videoconference meeting, please send us an email at [email protected], and we’ll send you an invitation to the videoconference meeting!

    • We’re in the midst of planning for upcoming events and celebrations: Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Easter, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation. We’ll keep you up-to-date as we continue to plan for these important events!

Blessings in the New Year to you and your loved ones! Fr Larry

A new year is upon us and we are so grateful to have the opportunity to share a bit about our programs and

to work together once again. January 16-17 has been designated for the special collection to benefit St.

Anthony School Programs and DePaul School for Hearing and Speech. On behalf of our students and staff,

we can’t thank you enough for supporting these invaluable programs that benefit many members of our

Diocese. St. Anthony’s and DePaul both fill a necessary role for special education within the Diocese of

Pittsburgh. St. Anthony School Programs offers an inclusive education to children ages 5-21 years with special

needs and DePaul School for Hearing and Speech teaches children, birth to 14 years, who are deaf or hard of

hearing to listen, speak, and learn. Both programs empower students to become active and contributing

members of their respective communities. Any help you can give is deeply appreciated and makes a

tremendous impact on the students we serve, as well as their families. Our fundraising efforts have been

greatly impacted by the pandemic, so again, any support you are able to give means so much. Thank you for

    your time and God bless.

St. Anthony and DePaul School Collection

    Lottery Ticket Fundraiser

This weekend and for the remaining weekends in January, we will sing at the dismissal the Hymn to Christ the Divine Shepherd to honor our Parish Community's anniversary. Composer J. Michael Thompson wrote the Lyrics to the tune for our parish.

Hymn to Christ the Divine Shepherd

The podcast guides Catholics through the Bible in 365 daily episodes. If you've struggled to read the Bible, this podcast is for you! Each 20-25 minute episode includes two to three scripture readings, a reflection from Fr. Mike Schmitz, and guided prayer to help you hear God's voice in his Word. You can find a link on our website at cdsmph.org

Ascension’s The Bible in a Year Podcast.

Divine Mercy Academy would like to thank everyone at Christ the Divine Shepherd Parish for their extremely generous support of our January Lottery Ticket fundraiser. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to sell over 1,700 tickets, almost 200 of which were purchased by our parishioners! Please note: there is a misprint on our January Lottery Tickets. The tickets mistakenly reflect the month of January 2020 instead of January 2021. If any friends or family member express any concerns, please assure them that we will follow the revised calendar posted below that accurately reflects the prizes for the month of January 2021. The prizes awarded are based on the DATE not the day of the week. We apologize for any confusion that this may have caused!

FEAST OF FAITH: The Sign of the Cross

At the beginning of our prayer, we make the sign of the cross together. This sign, simple and powerful, operates on many levels. We trace the sign of the cross over our bodies, reminding ourselves that the cross of Christ has become

our source of resurrection, life, and grace. With this sign, we also profess our faith in the Trinity: the presider does not say “in the names,” but “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”—three persons, one God. The sign of the cross is also a baptismal reminder, for every sign of the cross echoes the words spoken over us at our baptism, which marked our entry into the saving mystery of Christ. This many-layered sign is also our primary sign of blessing: the cross is traced over people, places, and things upon which we ask God to impart divine benediction. In

blessing ourselves with the sign of the cross at the beginning of Mass, we acknowledge the mystery that has gathered us together: that Christ, the crucified and risen One, is living, and that we are members of his Body. Our response, our

Amen, is our yes to all this, our first profession of faith.

Sanctuary Lamp In our parish churches, a lamp is always lit at each tabernacle to remind us that the Real Presence of Christ abides there in the Eucharist. It has been the custom at our predecessor parishes that parishioners have the opportunity to make offerings to support the burning of the sanctuary lamp in memory of loved ones.

This week’s sanctuary lamp at St. Susanna has been donated by Debbie and Chris, in loving memory of Anita Bonifati.

Please contact the parish office at 412-373-0050 if you are interested in sponsoring one of our tabernacle lamps.

The financial update for the past four weeks is still being calculated, and will appear in next week’s bulletin.

One of the most ancient and enduring sites for baptism in Rome is the church of San Giovanni in Fonte. This church is in fact a baptistery, and houses the font for the Lateran Basilica, the cathedral of Rome. The Emperor Constantine sponsored its construction in the year 315, and it is therefore the oldest baptistery in the world. It is the model for nearly all later baptisteries, including perhaps the font in your own parish church.

Ladies of Charity ~ Praise Letter for January

God, thank you for a new year and for seeing us safely through 2020. We pray for those who are no longer with us and ask for mercy on their souls. We pray for a healthy and peaceful 2021. We thank You for your constant forgiveness and ask we are given the grace to forgive ourselves and one another. Help us to live in the goodness that comes from doing what you want us to do. Help us to put aside anxiety about the future and the past, so that we might live in peace with you now, one day at a time. Keep in your prayers Pope Francis, Bishop Zubik, and all our priests of Christ the Divine Shepherd Parish and all the leaders of the church. May the Holy Spirit be with them and guide them so that they may guide God’s people. Lord, bless our parish and through your grace strengthen us, your church, to be a welcoming and faithful community. Pray for Pope Francis’ intentions for January - for human fraternity. May the Lord give us the grace to live in full fellowship with our brothers and sisters of other religions, praying for one another, open to all. Please pray for all of those that are facing challenges in their lives, that God will raise them up and keep them strong. May they never forget that they do not walk alone. Pray for the strength to be a good person. To love all those you can, to help as much as you can and to give what you can. Remember to pray for all those who are suffering physically, spiritually and mentally. May their faith sustain them and may God’s presence comfort them. Many saints are remembered this month including Saints John Neumann, Elizabeth Ann Seton, Angela Merici, Thomas Aquinas, Timothy, Basil and Sebastian. Pray for their intercession and their help. Pray for all of God’s creatures and ask for St. Francis of Assisi's intercession, that they all may be treated with kindness and love that His gifts deserve. Pray for all of those who are victims of war. May God’s loving arms shield them, may whatever medical help or other humanitarian aid they may need finds their way to them. Pray for those in need, especially those who are homeless or on the verge of eviction, hungry, thirsty or in need of medical care. For those who are jobless and alone. May God instill a sense of generosity to those in abundance so those in need may have their needs met. Pray for all of those who are victims of addictions, abuse, neglect, violence and bullying. For those who are victims of corrupt governments, famine, persecution and human trafficking. May God’s light shine in their lives so they know that they are not alone. Pray for this nation and the governing administration and all nations. May governments serve all people, not just a select few. May God guide all leaders. Please pray for an increase of vocations to the priesthood and religious life. May the Holy Spirit help those who are discerning they way they are to go in this life.

A book entitled "David's Echo - Uplifting the Human Spirit" was recently written by Elly (Kriss) Walkowiak and Rev. Aaron J. Kriss, siblings of Rev. David J. Kriss in his memory and as a tribute to him. Fr. Kriss (1953-2004) was Parochial Vicar at North American Martyrs Parish, Monroeville, from 1991 to 1994. This keepsake is based on an interview he gave and contains a poem dedicated to him, photographs, and excerpts from several private sources. It reveals how he found inspiration, shares how interacting with community from a spiritual and humanistic perspective made a difference in their lives and his, and explores how essential human connection is. To learn more or to obtain this book email Fr. Aaron Kriss at [email protected] or contact him at Guardian Angels Parish at 724 226 4900 ext. 20.

    Homily

    Profession of Faith

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven (all bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
