Our Elect and candidates learn the following from the very beginning of the process. It is a good meditation for lent.

Realize it, my brethren; —every one who breathes, high and low, educat-

ed and ignorant, young and old, man and woman, has a mission, has a work. We are not sent into

this world for nothing; we are not born at random; . . . God sees every one of us; He creates every soul, He lodges it in the body, one by one, for a

purpose. He needs, He deigns to need, every one of us. He has an end for each of us; we are all equal

in His sight, and we are placed in our different ranks and stations, not to get what we can out of them for ourselves, but to labor in them for Him. As Christ has His work, we too have ours; as He rejoiced to do His work, we must rejoice in ours

also." — Blessed John Henry Newman

Our church needs each and every person to do the

work of our Lord.

Chrism Mass Monday, March 26, 2018 Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi,

Metuchen at 7:30pm

On Monday, March 26, 2018 Bishop James F. Checchio will celebrate the Chrism Mass with the priests of the Diocese. At this Mass, the Bishop will bless the Holy Oils which each parish receives for the rites of anointing. Saint

Ambrose [340-397] began this custom – which we now call the Chrism Mass – in his Cathedral in Mi-lan. These Holy Oils, which are used to sanctify the Faithful, have been channels of holiness for centu-ries! The Oil of Catechumens is used to anoint the chest of infants and hands of adults before their Bap-tism; the Oil of the Sick is used on the forehead and hands of the infirm in the Sacrament of the Anoint-ing of the Sick; and Sacred Chrism is used to anoint the head of the newly baptized, the foreheads of con-firmandi, the hands of a priest at his ordination, the head of a bishop at his ordination, and the altar and walls of new churches. At the Mass, all priests make a Renewal of Commitment to Priestly Service, re-committing themselves to their Bishop and to their ministry to God and His People; the Bishop and all Priests then ask the people for a pledge of their prayerful support. All are strongly encouraged to join in the ancient, grace-filled Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi in Metuchen at 7:30pm

Mercy Sunday Celebration Our Lord is offering complete forgiveness of sins and punishment on Divine Mercy Sunday. This isn’t magical; this isn't Harry Potter. There is noth-ing magical about sharing in Our Lord's Divinity, in sharing in His Life nor are the Sacraments magi-cal. This is mystical; we are the Mystical Body of Christ. This remission of all sin and punishment is only found in the sacramental grace of Baptism. In other words, Jesus has raised the Holy Communion on Divine Mercy Sunday to the rank of a second Baptism. Let me explain. When we go to confes-sion our sins are forgiven and the eternal punish-ment of hell is completely taken away but our tem-poral punishment is not removed. We need to make up for our sins (though we never can, only Jesus can do that), we need to do penance for them, this is called our temporal punishment. Mom would say, "offer it up". We must make an atone-ment of our sins. Penance heals the wounds of the soul. By our sins we have affected the Mystical Body of Christ, His justice must be satisfied. We have damaged the soul by our sins and the temporal punishment repairs the damage done to the soul. For example, Our Lord forgave the good thief on the Cross, but He did not stop his crucifixion. The pain the thief endured was an atonement for his evil life. It was his temporal punishment. On Divine Mercy Sunday we will receive complete for-giveness of sins and punishment. So, there is no need for anyone to wonder if you have forgotten to confess a sin... venial sins or sins of omission. Everything is forgiven...if you were to die right af-terwards you would go straight to heaven - no pur-gatory. As I said this isn't magical there are requirements in obtaining this complete forgiveness of sins and punishment so please check the bulletin next week or go on line for more information. The Divine Mercy Novena and Chaplet pamphlets are in the vestibule of the Church along with an Ex-amination of Conscience. Thank you for taking one per family.

Mi madre decía, "ofrécelo a Dios.” To-do se perdona …
