El Santo Evangelio Según Juan (Jn 20, 19-23) Al anochecer del día de la resurrección, estando cerradas las puertas de la casa donde se hallaban los discípulos, por miedo a los judíos, se presentó Jesús en medio de ellos y les dijo: “La paz esté con uste-des”. Dicho esto, les mostró las manos y el costado. Cuando los discípulos vieron al Señor, se llenaron de alegría. De nuevo les dijo Jesús: “La paz esté con ustedes. Como el Padre me ha enviado, así también los envío yo”. Después de decir esto, sopló sobre ellos y les dijo: “Reciban el Espíritu Santo. A los que les perdonen los pecados, les quedarán perdonados; y a los que no se los perdonen, les quedarán sin perdonar”.

MEDITACIÓN: HECHOS 2, 1-11 Se llenaron todos del Espíritu Santo. (Hechos 2, 4) Antes de que Jesús ascendiera al cielo, les dijo a los apóstoles “ustedes serán bautizados con el Espíritu Santo” (Hechos 1, 5). Así que junto con María “se reunían siempre para orar” (1, 14). Y por supuesto, el Espíritu Santo descendió, con viento y fuego y les dio valor para proclamar el Evangelio. Pentecostés es la manifestación del poder de Dios y la transformación de los apóstoles. Pero recorde-mos que ellos no recibieron el Espíritu solamente ese día. Necesitaron sumergirse en el Espíritu una y otra vez para recibir más de la gracia y el poder de Dios. El libro de los Hechos de los Apóstoles regis-tra al menos siete ocasiones en que los apóstoles quedaron “llenos” del Espíritu (Hechos 2, 4; 4, 8. 31; 6, 8; 7, 55 y 13, 9. 52). ¡Y hubo muchas más pero no se incluyeron en la Biblia! Lo mismo sucede con nosotros. Aunque recibimos el Espíritu Santo en el Bautismo y la Confirmación, continuamente necesitamos más del poder y los dones del Espíritu para seguir al Señor y proclamar la buena noticia. Jesús sabía cuánto íbamos a necesitar al Espíritu Santo, y por eso mucho antes de su Ascensión, animó a los discípulos a rezar por este don: “Si ustedes… saben dar cosas buenas a sus hijos, ¡cuánto más el Padre celestial dará el Espíritu Santo a quienes se lo pidan!” (Lucas 11, 13). Y el Evangelio de Juan nos asegura que “Dios da abundantemente su Espíritu” (3, 34). ¡Dios siempre tiene algo más para nosotros! En este día, sigue el ejemplo de los apóstoles. Cree en la promesa de Dios de su Espíritu y reza para re-cibirlo. Sigue rezando, no solo en esta fiesta especial, sino todos los días. Incluso podrías pedir a algu-nos amigos que recen por ti para que recibas un nuevo derramamiento del Espíritu en tu vida. Tal vez no escuches el viento ni veas fuego, pero el Espíritu vendrá de nuevo sobre ti, inesperadamente y de formas extraordinarias, no solo para tu beneficio sino para el bien de su cuerpo, la Iglesia. “Espíritu Santo, haz tu hogar en mi corazón, hoy y siempre.” Salmo 104 (103), 1. 24. 29-31. 34 1 Corintios 12, 3-7. 12-13 Juan 20, 19-23

The Holy Gospel According to Saint John (JN 20:19-23)

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”

MEDITATION: ACTS 2:1-11 They were all filled with the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:4) Just how big was that “all”? Well, Luke tells that “about one hundred and twenty persons” were together the day the apostles chose Matthias to replace Judas (Acts 1:15). It’s quite possible that many of them had joined the apostles to celebrate the Jewish feast of Pentecost as well. So those “all” who had gathered that day probably included people like Mary Magdalene, along with some of the other women who went to Jesus’ tomb on Easter Sunday. You can also imagine Simon the Cyrenian being there, along with his sons, Alexander and Rufus (Mark 15:21). And what about Peter’s wife? Or Zacchaeus or Lazarus and Martha and Mary? Maybe Stephen and the other future deacons were there, along with people whose names have been lost to history. Whoever was there, Luke tells us that they all received the same gift of the Holy Spirit. They all began speaking in tongues. And they all found new courage and boldness to speak “of the mighty acts of God” (Acts 2:11). You know where this is going, right? God gives the same Spirit that filled Peter and the apostles to everyone who asks. That includes you, your family, your friends, even your enemies. God doesn’t restrict his blessings to a chosen few. He wants to fill everyone! Try something different at Mass today. Whether you’re gathered with fellow parishioners in your church or joining others online, imagine what it would be like if the Spirit fell on all of you during the liturgy. What would it look like for all of those present—including you—to experience the Holy Spirit in the same way the disciples did? Or to be so filled with joy that all burst out in praise of the Lord? Or to experience God’s love in a deep, intimate way? In fact, don’t just imagine it. Pray for it! “Come, Holy Spirit, and fill the hearts of your people!”

Solemnidad de Pentecostés? Pentecostés marca la ocasión en que Dios envía el Espíritu Santo sobre los discípulos de Jesús después de su Resurrección. El libro de los Hechos describe cómo los discípulos se reunieron en un solo lugar el día de Pentecostés. La fiesta judía de Pentecostés (Shavuot o la Fiesta de las Semanas) fue un día que conmemoró la entrega de la ley a Moisés, un día que pronto sería marcado también por la venida del Espíritu Santo. En Pentecostés, el Espíritu Santo les dio a los discípulos la fuerza para cumplir con su comisión de difundir la Buena Nueva de Jesús. Did you know that ... today we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost?

Pentecost marks the occasion of God sending the Holy Spirit upon Jesus’ disciples after his Resurrection. The book of Acts describes how the disciples were gathered together in one place on the day of Pentecost.

The Jewish feast of Pentecost (Shavuot or the Feast of Weeks) was a day that commemorated the giving of the law to Moses, a day soon to be marked as well by the giving of the Holy Spirit.

On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit gave the disciples the strength to fulfill their commission to spread the Good News of Jesus.

The Solemnity of Pentecost, which crowns and fulfills the Easter season, is a good time to pray for a deeper indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer to the Holy Spirit The following prayer was recited by Pope Benedict XVI in a homily on November 7, 2006. This is a prayer to the Holy Spirit.

Let us invoke him so that he will irrigate, warm and straighten, so that he will pervade us with the power of his sacred flame and renew the earth.
