Faith Formation 2020
Plans for the 2020-2021 Faith Formation year are coming to-gether. Families who participated in last year’s program should be receiving an email from Fr. Costa, Mike Fitzpatrick and Anne Cabral this week. Like our schools, we are using various ways to connect with our children and youth, a “hybrid model,” so to speak. Mike Fitzpatrick, coordinator for Grades 1-5, will be available after Sunday Masses this weekend October 11, to give out the Gospel weekly packets and to accept new registrations. He will be using the parish center (basement of the church at Saint Thomas More). If at all possible, parents registering their child for the first time should bring with them a copy of the child’s baptism certificate. We will photocopy and return the original to you. It is imperative that we have current e-mail addresses, as we communicate with our families in this fashion. Families new to our program for Grades 6-8 and Confirmation may register with Mike this weekend.
PARISH CENSUS
This week we begin a massive undertak-ing: updating our parish census. Recent-ly, the Bishop mandated all parishes and institutions of the Diocese to use the same record keeping computer software for uniformity, efficiency, and better commu-nication/sharing of information. This is an ideal time to update our parish records. We need to reach as many people as pos-sible and in the most economic of ways. As you leave Mass over the next few weeks, please take a new census form. They are color coded by parish: St. Pat’s – green; St. Louis – blue; and St. Thomas, pink. Complete the form and return it in the boxes when you return for Mass next week. Eventually, we will mail and email those who are not with us at weekend Mass. If you know of any neighbors, family mem-bers or friends who should be enrolled in our census, please bring forms to them. Your assistance is very much appreciated!

Scripture Insights
Today’s parable from Matthew’s Gospel compares the kingdom of heaven to a king and his lavish feast for his son’s wedding. This king’s behaviors are rather disturbing. Since some of his original guests declined his invitation to attend due to their farm or business, they are people with resources. The banquet is not meant to provide for the needy. The subsequent filling of the ban-quet hall with people off the street reads like a face-saving move, given how the king gets upset with a replacement guest who does not dress right. How could he expect all to have the proper attire when they are just gathered off the streets? His burning the cities harms more than those who arrested, attacked, or killed his slaves. Note that the parable never indicates who is making the comparison and that it is part of Jesus’ response to the religious leaders who question his authority after his celebrated entry into Jerusalem and his cleansing of the Temple. The closing statement, “For many are called but few are chosen,” may conclude Jesus’ series of three parables (see the Gospels for the past two Sun-day’s) instead of merely this specific parable. In fact, this statement hardly fits the parable since the king kicks out only one guest. Those “chosen” may refer to people who reject this parable’s comparison. Psalm 23 prayed today and today’s first reading from Isaiah 25 also present God as one who provides abundant food and drink, but they present a different picture of God. In these pas-sages, God is a provider and protector rather than a temperamental tyrant. We see a similar ex-pression of faith by Saint Paul in today’s second reading from the letter to the Philippians. Be-cause Paul has experienced both prosperity and paucity, he has learned the secret that Christ Jesus is sufficient and can strengthen him to face and situation. God, for Paul, is one who will meet our every need. ___________________________________________________________________________________________
Prayer Before An Election As we look to our upcoming national elections, the Catholic bishops of the United States ask us to offer this pray-er: Lord God, as the election approaches, We seek to better understand the issues and concerns that confront our city/state/country, and how the Gospel compels us to respond as faithful citizens in our community. We ask for eyes that are free from blindness so that we might see each other as brothers and sisters, one and equal in dignity, especially those who are victims of abuse and violence, deceit and poverty. We ask for ears that will hear the cries of children unborn and those abandoned, and of men and women oppressed because of race or creed, religion or gender. We ask for minds and hearts that are open to hearing the voices of leaders who will bring us closer to your Kingdom. We pray for discernment so that we may choose leaders who hear your Word, live your love, and keep in the ways of your truth as they follow in the steps of Jesus and his Apostles and guide us to your Kingdom of justice and peace. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen!
