The Catholic Community of St. Joseph

OUR MISSION The continuing presence of the Lord makes us a family which loves and respects the dignity of each person. Like St. Joseph, we protect and serve the family, the poor, the elderly, the young, the sick, and all who suffer. We form our faith in order to live in total fidelity to God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. With our gifts, we create a community of communities which, in love, justice, and peace make the kingdom of God a reality.

RICHES TO RAGS Why would a wealthy heiress leave a life of luxury for one of poverty and service? The life of Saint Katharine Drexel (1858–1955) is a “riches to rags” story that turns the conventional American success story upside down. Katharine was the middle daughter of a wealthy, socially prominent Philadelphia banker. Her father was convinced that their large fortune meant that God had greater expectations of them concerning its use. Katharine saw the impact of her family’s generosity, which influenced her to devote her life and money to the poor. Initially she wanted simply to renounce her fortune. She even asked Pope Leo XIII to send missionary priests to serve Native Americans. He suggested she do it herself, so Katharine gave up her place of privilege to found the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, devoted to serving African-Americans and Native Americans. Using twenty million dollars of her own money, she founded over sixty schools and established Xavier University in New Orleans, the only Catholic university for African-Americans. As they spread across the United States, Katharine and her sisters extended themselves tirelessly in caring for those on the margins of American society. Like the seventy disciples in today’s Gospel, they and their work were despised by some. They were called vicious names and spat upon in the street. Mother Katharine, as her sisters called her, renounced wealth and embraced poverty because of her deep love for Jesus Christ, gratitude for his sacrifice on the cross, and desire to be united with him forever. In Jesus’ name, she and her sisters brought education, material assistance, and above all, the Good News to those despised or avoided by society at large. Blessed Sacrament Sisters continue serving today, bringing the message of today’s Gospel: “The kingdom of God is at hand for you” (Luke 10:9). Copyright © 2009, World Library Publications. SAVE THE DATES!! ST. JOSEPH FAMILY FALL FESTIVAL

SEPTEMBER 20, 21 AND 22!!!!! What is our festival really about? It is the ONE TIME each year that each and all of our ministries, as well as those who do not belong to any ministry, have the opportunity to share in fellowship and come together to make a difference in the parish. If you are interested in helping, please contact Carolyn Hite or Ray Contreras. Our next Festival Planning meeting will be Thursday, July 11 at 7:00 PM in the Parish Office – we want to see you there participating!! MEET YOUR FESTIVAL CHAIRMEN!

Carolyn Hite: When Fr. Jerry asked for volunteers to chair the festival back in 2008, Carolyn Hite was the first person to raise her hand, even though she was only a member of our parish for 5 weeks! That was a great inspiration to many people in getting our

festival back up and running. This will be Carolyn’s 6th year as one of your Festival Chairmen. Along with this service to our parish, she has also become active as a Catechist and is currently a member of the Pastoral Council. Her family members are also very involved in ministries at St. Joseph.

Ray Contreras: This will be Ray’s 4th year as one of your Festival Chairmen. And what ministry isn’t Ray involved in?? He is a member of the Finance Council as well as a Liaison to the Pastoral Council, as well as being a Reader at the Liturgies. If there is a parish event, you can bet that Ray will be there! We thank him for many years of service to our parish and taking on this role again.

KIDS KORNER IS LOOKING FOR YOUR DONATIONS! Please bring the following items to the Parish Office to help defray the costs of making Kids Korner a wonderful, safe place for our children to enjoy the Festival: Tootsie Pops, Lollipops, Hard wrapped candy, Confetti eggs, empty egg shells, Cake Mix, ready-made frosting, Brown paper lunch bags, and new toys of any size. These items can be brought right away to help the Kids Korner committee save costs when ordering their supplies. Our Kids Korner is also looking for used fancy clothing, hats, formals, heels, etc. Please bring these items to the Parish Office and label them – “Festival Kids Korner.” Thanks so much for your contributions.
