New Eucharistic Minister Training Saturday, September 21, 2019
St. Barnabas Church Hall
9:00am-12:30 pm
Anyone interested in serving the faith community of St. Barnabas as a Eucharistic Minister is invited to attend Initial
Training for New Eucharistic Ministers. This one session training program includes prayer, reflection and praxis where
participants will explore what it means to be an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist in the 21st century. Training to
cover the specifics of being a Minister of the Eucharist at our parish will be included.
To register for the training, please contact:
Kitty Ryan at 773-779-1166 ext. 226
Dear Parishioners, I extend a hearty welcome back to all of our school children, parents, teachers and staff. Sleepy Longwood
Drive gives way to the mayhem as 550 children are deposited in front of the school. Some for the first time
and others so familiar they don't look back. Some tears shed privately for their baby is going off to school.
Their little companions growing up in front of their very eyes. Just wait until you drop them off at college!!!
It's as if someone pushes the start button and presto busyness returns to the Sacred Space of
St Barnabas. A new school year, resumption of activity, the journey continues. Hopefully our own journey
and the journey of this community are in sync. Another year full of potential is upon us. Days to be lived with
a shared vision and renewed energy. Welcome back, welcome home you were missed. I pray that Sunday
Worship becomes an important part of your Sunday and your life.
Let us pray for a great school year and a year of tremendous grace.

Faith Formation
SPRED INFORMATION NIGHT Are you familiar with SPRED? SPRED is a catechetical and religious education program for those with special needs.
It is also a ministry of friendship. SPRED works by gathering and training men and women of a parish community and
bringing them together for regular sessions with friends of a particular age group who have special needs. At these
sessions, the parishioners grow in love and friendship with their friends.
For the past eighteen years, St. Barnabas has been part of the SPRED program. Our SPRED group traditionally
welcomed young adults, ages 17 to 21. We have also helped place people in other age groups in SPRED programs
in neighboring parishes like St. Cajetan, whose program welcomes adults ages 22 and older.
The SPRED program at St. Barnabas is very important. There will always be a need to reach out to families with
children who have special needs, and SPRED is a proven model of how to do so in a joyful and loving manner. At
present, the people who have given their time to SPRED have either retired or moved. We are now in need of a new
team of SPRED ministers--we are looking for eight men and women who can continue the program at St. Barnabas. No
experience with people with special needs is required. Training in the SPRED method of building friendships is
provided. We are working to find interested adults who want to form friendships with others, grow in their faith,
and try something new in their service to others. We also want to meet parish families of people with
developmental and intellectual disabilities, such as those who live with autism spectrum disorder, Down
syndrome, learning problems, and cerebral palsy with a developmental delay, no matter their age or level of
ability who are in our parish. When a new friend joins SPRED, he or she will have a helper catechist and a one
on one relationship within this small community of faith. Individual SPRED communities typically work within a
defined age group; please know that SPRED is open to the St. Barnabas community creating a new age 17-21
group or a new group for friends ages 6 to 10. Both are currently needed in our local community area.
A representative from SPRED will be coming to all our Masses to talk and meet folks on
September 7-8. We invite those interested in this ministry, as well as interested parents, to come
to a SPRED information gathering on Monday, September 9, 2019, at 7:00 p.m. in Convent
North meeting room.
SPRED helps us grow in joy, kindness, goodness, gentleness, love, peace, and patience as we learn how to be friends
with one another in a small community of faith. To learn more about SPRED, please visit our website at
http://www.spred-chicago.org.

ST. RITA CARITAS PROJECT : SERVING THOSE WHO SERVED As apart of our senior Caritas Project, myself, Evan Wojcicki, and my classmates, Alex Vazquez and Kevin Murney,
have been working with the Edward Hines VA hospital to help restore their healing garden. While working and
speaking with the veterans we learned of the great need for hygiene and entertainment products. The items we are
seeking include but are not limited to: alcohol free aftershave and mouthwash, chapstick, combs, disposable razors,
shampoo, playing cards, puzzle books, and paper back books. Cash donations will also be accepted to help purchase
more items for the veterans. We will be in the back of church on Sunday, August 25 to collect the items.
For more information and a complete list of items contact: Evan Wojcicki [email protected] or 312-480-

JOIN THE ST. BARNABAS ADULT CHOIR 2019-20 SEASON
Music is an exciting and fulfilling ministry with the power to express what words cannot. Music touches the soul, heals the heart and enhances our prayer. It is a wonderful way to become involved in our parish as we give back to God the talents and gifts God has bestowed upon us.
St. Barnabas parish is looking to continue developing a full, vibrant and energetic choir including both the young and the old gathered as one in prayer as we lead the song of the assembly at the 10:00 a.m. Sunday liturgies from September through May. We rehearse once a week on Wednesday evenings from 7:00—9:00 p.m.in the church. Anyone from high school age and up who loves to sing is invited and encouraged to join us. No experience is necessary!
We are also seeking experienced instrumentalists who would be willing to share their gifts and talents with the faith community of St. Barnabas.
Please consider joining us for a spiritually and musically uplifting experience! Rehearsals will begin on Wednesday, September 4th at 7:00 p.m. in church. Feel free to bring a friend. If you have any questions, please contact Kitty Ryan at 773-779-1166 ext 226 or by e-mail at [email protected]
May the music of our days, Lord, be a song in praise of You!

JOIN THE ST. BARNABAS CHILDREN’S CHOIR
2019-20 SEASON
The beautiful sound of children’s voices raised in song in praise of God is a very uplifting and moving experience. We would like to continue expanding our full, vibrant and energetic children’s choir at St. Barnabas to further enhance our liturgies.
Any student, in grades 3-8 in Fall of 2019, is invited to join the St. Barnabas Children’s Choir. Rehearsals will be held every Wednesday from 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. in the church beginning on Wednesday, September 4, 2019. As the Choir continues to grow we will be able to build on the foundation we have set by doing more work with the Orff xylophones and by adding more challenging music to our repertoire. The Children’s Choir will lead the music at various liturgies from September through May. A detailed schedule will be distributed at a later date.
Anyone who loves to sing is encouraged to join us in this fun, exciting and fulfilling ministry. It is a wonderful opportunity for the young members of our faith community to learn more about their faith and to serve both God and our parish. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions at 773-779-1166 ext. 226 or at [email protected] NAME: ______________________________________ SCHOOL: _____________________________________ GRADE_______________ (Fall 2019) RM___________ MOTHER’S NAME: ____________________________ FATHER’S NAME:_____________________________ ADDRESS: ____________________________________ HOME PHONE: ________________________________ MOTHER’S CELL PHONE:______________________ FATHER’S CELL PHONE: ______________________ EMAIL ADDRESS______________________________ PLEASE RETURN TO RECTORY ATTN: KITTY RYAN
