Dear Brothers and Sisters: Today’s gospel has the memorable and bold request of James and John—to sit at the right and the left of Jesus Christ in heaven. They wanted to be number one, top dog, and the other apostles were indignant when they heard them, since they also wanted to be in the first place. Mark does not sugar coat the apostles in his gospel; he tells it like it is. Jesus takes this opportunity to teach the Twelve (and us) and remind them that those who rule the Gentiles lord it over them, but it must not be so with you; whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant and whoever would be the first among you must be the slave of all. And Jesus explains the greatest reason: For the Son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Jesus does not cease to repeat this message many times in the gospels, and we can see that his whole life was a service to others, to forget about oneself and to live for the others. This is what our baptism is about, dying to ourselves, to the old man, so we can live for others. In the primitive Church it was believed and celebrated in Baptism that the ‘old man’ inside of all of us died and the ‘new man’ came out of the baptismal pool.

The Second Vatican Council, whose 50th anniversary we are celebrating in this Year of Faith, wants us to relive our Baptism and discover its power and greatness. This is the main aim of the catechesis going on in our parish: to realize the immensity of what God gave us in Baptism, and in the sacraments. Even though the Apostles do not really know what they are asking for at this point in time, eventually God gives them the Spirit of Jesus Christ. How do we see the spirit of Christ in them? They all gave their life for the Church in very heroic circumstances. It was not due to their own strength, but to the grace that God gave them. Let us ask the Lord to help us also to be the one who serves (and goes unnoticed), as we have been seeing lately in the efforts of many to organize our 140th Anniversary picnic and our carnival, and many other things in our parish.

NEWLY RENOVATED LAMPS The hanging lamps in the church have all been rewired and repainted and new glass has replaced the old, yellow ones. In addition new energy efficient lights are being used and our electric bill in May was $306; in the fall it was usually around $900. The work was done by two men who charged us very little for their labor. If a company had done this work it would have been $2,000 per light, at least. Two larger lamps have been sponsored by a generous parishioner for $500 each. We are very grateful to him. The smaller lamps can be sponsored for $150 each. Three of the lamps have been dedicated. Thank you for your generosity!

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — My servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear (Isaiah 53:10-11). Psalm — Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you (Psalm 33). Second Reading — Let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help (Hebrews 4:14-16). Gospel — Whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all (Mark 10:35-45 [42-45]).

St. HILARION Saint of the Week

Despite his best efforts to live in prayer and solitude, today’s saint found it difficult to achieve his deepest desire. People were naturally drawn

to Hilarion as a source of spiritual wisdom and peace. He had reached such fame by the time of his death that his body had to be secretly removed so that a shrine would not be built in his honor. Instead, he was buried in his home village. St. Hilarion the Great, as he is

sometimes called, was born in Palestine. After his conversion to Christianity he spent some time with St. Anthony of Egypt, another holy man drawn to solitude. Hilarion lived a life of hardship and simplicity in the desert, where he also experienced spiritual dryness that included temptations to despair. At the same time, miracles were attributed to him.

As his fame grew, a small group of disciples wanted to follow Hilarion. He began a series of journeys to find a place where he could live away from the world. He finally settled on Cyprus, where he died in 371 at about age 80.

Hilarion is celebrated as the founder of monasticism in Palestine. Much of his fame flows from the biography of him written by St. Jerome.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In the eyes of many, the papacy is a peculiar institution. Still bedecked with some of the regalia of medieval princes, contemporary popes have worked to define their role in ways that give them influence over the world both within and outside the Church. The trappings of royalty, never really a good fit for the successors

of Peter, could render a pope distant and irrelevant. On the other hand, the tendency of many to think of the pope as if he were the CEO of a modern corporation is also inaccurate. St. Gregory the Great, himself a pope, first called the pope “the servant of the servants of God.” He is “first among equals” among other bishops, who by tradition exerc ise s ignif icant

authority within their own dioceses, not depending on the pope’s authority. This arrangement often puzzles those accustomed to a top-to-bottom “chain of command.” History has seen popes of many styles, but most strive to live up to Gregory’s definition. Perhaps today’s Gospel puts it all into the best perspective: “Whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all.” Pray for the pope this week.
