PENTECOST SUNDAY

First Reading: Acts 2:1-11 The disciples were celebrating Pentecost together when "tongues of fire appeared which parted, then came to rest on each of them." The disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in foreign tongues. Visitors from many different countries were amazed that each guest could hear his or her native language being spoken as the disciples proclaimed God's glory. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13 Each person has received different manifestations of the same spirit to contribute to the common good of all. All members of the church have been baptized into one body because of our belief in the Holy Spirit, who was sent to us by God. Gospel: John 20:19-23 Jesus appeared to the disciples even though they had locked the doors in fear. Jesus then showed the disciples his hands and his side; and they rejoiced at his presence. He breathed on them saying "Receive the Holy Spirit." He then gave the disciples the power to forgive others or hold them accountable for their sins.

Here is the story of a great coach who was retiring. He and his teams had won many championships. He was very proud of them, and they were very proud of him. He knew that it was time for him to pull back from the daily grind of practices, the frequent strain and tension of the games. He was fraying around the edges, and he knew it. So did the smarter players, but they loved him so much that they would not admit this even to themselves. He did not want to leave the school or give up the sport, not yet anyway. So it was agreed that he would become the ath-letic director and his best assistant would become the coach. He promised that he would never interfere in the daily running of the team. Since he was a man of his word, everyone knew that he was telling the truth. Yet there was terrible ambivalence in the team. On the one hand, they were glad the coach was doing what was good for him. On the other hand, they didn’t want to lose him, not even the man who was going to take over as head coach. The old coach would still be around but in the background. It would never be like it used to be, like it had been for such a long time. At his farewell dinner, the play-ers, the coaches, the teachers, and the parents were all deeply moved. They did not want to say goodbye, yet they knew the change would be good and that it was wise to say goodbye. In his farewell speech, the coach com-mended his players to the new coach. Take good care of them, he said. I know you will and I promise not to inter-fere, but take good care of them because I love them all. This is how Jesus felt about us when he said goodbye to return to the Father in heaven. More importantly, that is the way He still feels about us and He has a lot more power than an athletic director. And Jesus gave us His Holy Spirit to be with us. As we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost this Sunday we need to permit the Holy Spirit to direct our lives: a) by constantly remembering and appreciating His Holy Presence within us, especially through the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation; b) by fortifying ourselves with the help of the Spirit against all types of tempta-tions; c) by seeking the assistance of the Spirit in our thoughts, words, and deeds, and in the breaking of our evil habits; d) by listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit speaking to us through the Bible and through the good counsel of others; e) by fervently praying for the gifts, fruits and charisms of the Holy Spirit; f) by renewing our lives through the anointing of the Holy Spirit; and g) by living our lives in the Holy Spirit as lives of commitment, of sacrifice, and of joy. We are called to love as Jesus loved, not counting the cost. As Saint Paul exhorts us, "Walk by the Spirit, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit" (Galatians 5:16, 25). Have a Blessed Week!
