Dear Friends in Christ,

At almost every Mass at Prince of Peace we pray together:

Lord, send us priests.

Lord, send us holy priests.

Lord, send us many holy priests.

I first came across this prayer when I was living in Paris at my parish there, Saint

-Eugene, which, like Prince of Peace, had a flourishing liturgical and spiritual life.

I was amazed at the sheer number of vocations to the priesthood and religious

life that the parish had produced, and it was not because of anything other than

being authentically Catholic. You may not know it, but we have a number of

young men and women who are considering a vocation to the priesthood and

religious life here at Prince of Peace.

Father Matthew Gray, the Director of Vocations for the Diocese of Charleston,

is scheduled to be with us this weekend as we celebrate the Feast of the

Presentation of Jesus/Purification of Mary, and has spent part of this week with

our kids, encouraging them to consider a vocation to priesthood and religious

life.

It is a very difficult time in the Church’s history to set out on a life like this. It

requires heroic virtue, courage and wisdom, but, as I see so many of our young

people grow up here, I have no doubt many saintly vocations can come from

our own ranks. Parents, don’t pressure your kids into going off to the convent

or a seminary, but do encourage a culture of vocation at home. Holy families

will yield holy children; happy families will instill happiness in their children.

If you get a chance, please say an extra prayer for Fr Gray’s important work to

promote priests for South Carolina, and take a moment to greet him and let

him know how you are praying for him. Somebody’s got to take my place at

this altar in your parish church someday. I hope to die with my boots on, like a

good priest, but we need men to come in after me and keep this wonderful

parish going. And to think that young men and women formed here at our

parish can influence the future of our Church is really exciting!

As of 24 January, our parish has received 178 gifts totaling

$721,855 (over a 5 year campaign) which is 55% of the target set by the Bicentennial Campaign. It's not too late to

give!

Many of you have inquired about the process for making payments so we wanted to provide you this

update:

If you made a pledge, you may have received a Pledge Reminder notification, This is not a bill; it is simply a

reminder notice, Payments may be made on the schedule that best suits you, If you have any questions

regarding this reminder, you may call theAnne Durney at the Diocese at 843-261-

0437 or [email protected].

Parishioners who set up pledges that are not credit cards or direct debit payments will receive reminders

with a pre-addressed return envelope at the schedule selected. Payments will be mailed to Catholic Commu-

nity Foundation of South Carolina, Bicentennial Cam-paign Office, PO Box 31257, Charleston SC 29417.

If you provided information for automatic credit card

payment or bank withdrawal, those payments are being processed on or around the 15th of the month

according to the schedule you requested, You will not receive monthly pledge reminders or return enve-

lopes,

In case you still want to make a pledge, you can always call Tyler Murphy at (603) 493-8460, or the Bicenten-

nial Office at (854) 222-3994.

6 Feb is the Feast of Paul Miki and Companions (the

Japanese Martyrs). On the heels of a great conver-

sion of the Japanese people by St. Francis Xavier, St.

Paul Miki and his companions began their work of

tending to the Catholic churches and converting the

Japanese pagans. While at civil war the new ruler ex-

ecuted St. Paul Miki and his companions and burned

down 130 Catholic Churches and banned all Chris-

tians from the country. This is a great day to order

Japanese take-out (or make a simple hibachi style stir

fry) and discuss the fortitude and courage of mission-

aries and martyrs and how they are still in existence

today!

Happenings & Needs

Everyone is invited to join us on Wednesday, Febru-

ary 5 from 4-8 pm at Panera Bread on Haywood

Road (708 Haywood Road, Greenville) for Spirit

Night! Panera Bread will donate 20% of all sales

mentioned in support of Prince of Peace Catholic

School.

In order to receive credit for your sale (dine-in, car-

ry-out, or drive-thru orders), please make sure to

present the flyer (paper or mobile copy) when or-

dering (posted on parish website blog at

princeofpeacetaylors.net and below) . The more

people you invite, the more funds we can raise to

benefit our school!

Thank you to both the parish & school for your tre-

mendous support of Birthright Greenville across the

month of January. Your donations of diapers, blan-

kets, wipes, shampoos and more directly supports

local women who chose life in the face of an un-

planned pregnancy. Great work!

3 February is the Feast of St. Blaise. Made a bishop in

the early fourth century, he chose to live in a humble

cave instead of the bishops mansion. He was a physi-

cian and performed many miraculous healings. At his

arrest a woman laid her child, who was choking on a

fishbone, at his feet. The child survived but St. Blaise

was sill beheaded. He is known as the patron saint of

choking and ailments of the throat. On this day, ei-

ther at mass or at home by the head of the house-

hold a blessing of each persons throat with candles

can be made saying, “Through the intercession of St.

Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from

every disease of the throat and from every other ill-

ness: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and

of the Holy Spirit.” For dinner serve fish!

Diocesan & Other Parish News

Needing food shouldn't require compromising well-

ness or dignity. That's what we love about Catholic

Charities Greenville pantry, which is truly a mini-

grocery store experience where clients can shop

with wellness as a focus - stocking their grocery carts

with meats, fruits, vegetables and grains.

Can you serve as a shopping buddy volunteer in their

pantry (2300 Old Buncombe Rd, Greenville, SC

29609) on Tuesdays (anytime between 12-4) and/or

Thursdays (anytime between 12-6)? The shopping

buddy volunteers go around the pantry with a client

to assist in selecting meats, fruits, vegetables, and

grains. And, the shopping buddy helps the client to

their car with food items.

If interested in being a shopping buddy (or helping

with administrative tasks, data entry, sorting/

stocking), schedule a tour and orientation (1-1.5

hours) with Gracie Ortiz, Catholic Charities Regional

Coordinator for the Upstate, 864-331-2626 and

[email protected]. This orientation/tour

helps folks discern what is the best fit for them.

Byzantine Liturgy is at 3p on the second and fourth Sunday of each month at St Rafka’s Maronite Catho-lic Church on Hwy 14.

FREE MOVIE NIGHT AT OLR! Our Lady of the Ro-

sary Respect Life Ministry will show the movie,

“Unplanned” in Guadalupe Hall on Saturday, 22 Feb-

ruary, 2020 following the 5p Mass. Since the Hall can

only accommodate 100 people, please call to make

your reservation to Annette Burgess (864.772.9020).

St Rafka’s monthly pasta dinner will be Thursday, 6

February 5.30-7.30p. Menu will be spaghetti and

meatballs, tossed salad, dessert and tea. Adults are

$10 and children $5.
