Beau Quattrone Principal St. John the Baptist / St. Joseph Catholic Schools

Dear Friends in Christ,

The Gospel reading today is, of course, appropriate for the first Sunday in Advent. It clearly falls in the category of being a discussion for the return of Christ and the events that will accompany that return. As always, God reveals just enough about the future to give us hope, but not so much that we do not have to live and walk faithfully each and every day. We have assurance about the things hoped for, and belief about the things not yet seen, but what we do not have is a timetable in the Scriptures, nor would that have been helpful to us anyway. “Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come.” This presents us with Je-sus telling his disciples that neither angels, nor ordinary hu-man beings, nor even he himself, know the timing of His Re-turn. Only the Father knows such things as is written in the Gospel, “So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come."

With that being said, we are getting ready for our Advent services and we will continue them as usual at St. John the Baptist school and I would like to start a new tradition at St. Joseph school. The students will assemble in the cafeteria to prepare for an Advent service with the 8th grade students leading the prayer during this time. This will be taking place at both schools and should not take away too much instructional time. To me, this is something important to offer to the students at both schools because “Advent” means the coming of Jesus into the world. I feel we need to prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus. Unfortunately, we will not be able to complete all four Sundays for the Advent prayers, but we will pray what we can before the students leave for Christmas break. They will leave for break with an understanding of what the Christmas season is really about.

Also, our annual Breakfast with Santa will be offered again this year at St. John the Baptist School on Sunday December 9th. The breakfast will be from 9:00 am to 11:30 am and they will be serving my favorite, French toast sticks. Come out

and enjoy a fun family morning, bring your camera because I heard Santa will be making a stop. This is an all OPV Community Building Event. I hope to see you there! As the Gospel states, we do not know if we have a short time or a long time to live; much less do we know the time fixed for our judgment. Our Lord's coming will be wonderful to those that will be found ready, but those that are not ready, it will not be as joyous. “Therefore, you don’t know in what hour your Lord comes.” Our preparation has to do with spiritual awakening rather than physical. The people who live as Jesus has taught, will not be threatened by Jesus’ sudden appearance. Instead, the coming of Jesus will be very satisfying.

God Bless, Beau Quattrone, Principal St. John the Baptist/St. Joseph Catholic Schools

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

READING I I S 2:1-5

This is what Isaiah, son of Amoz, saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. In days to come, the mountain of the LORD's house shall be established as the highest mountain and raised above the hills. All nations shall stream toward it; many peoples shall come and say: "Come, let us climb the LORD's mountain, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may instruct us in his ways, and we may walk in his paths." For from Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and impose terms on many peoples. They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks; one nation shall not raise the sword against another, nor shall they train for war again. O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord!

RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 122:1-2, 3-4, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9

R. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.

I rejoiced because they said to me, "We will go up to the house of the LORD." And now we have set foot within your gates, O Jerusalem.

R. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.

Jerusalem, built as a city with compact unity. To it the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD.

R. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.

According to the decree for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the LORD. In it are set up judgment seats, seats for the house of David.

R. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! May those who love you prosper! May peace be within your walls, prosperity in your buildings.

R. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.

Because of my brothers and friends I will say, "Peace be within you!" Because of the house of the LORD, our God, I will pray for your good.

R. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.

READING 2 ROM 13:11-14

Brothers and sisters: You know the time; it is the hour now for you to awake from sleep. For our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed; the night is advanced, the day is at hand. Let us then throw off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us conduct ourselves properly as in the day, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in promiscuity and lust, not in rivalry and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the desires of the flesh.

R. Alleluia, alleluia. CF. P S 85:8

Show us Lord, your love; and grant us your salvation.

R. Alleluia, alleluia. GOSPEL MT 24:37-44

Jesus said to his disciples: "As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. In those days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day that Noah entered the ark. They did not know until the flood came and carried them all away. So will it be also at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be out in the field; one will be taken, and one will be left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken, and one will be left. Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come. Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour of night when the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and not let his house be broken into. So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come."

OPV CATHOLIC FINANCIAL REPORT 11/17/19

This weekend marks the First Sunday of Advent, the beginning of a new liturgical

year. As we celebrate throughout Advent our anticipation of Christ coming

again into our lives, we are also anticipating the merger of our parishes into the reality of one new parish. As we prepare for the coming of Christ, let us continue to prepare for the

coming merger, by strengthening the bonds of unity among our parishes, praying for those in leadership, dedicating ourselves to accept the mission of Christ to be missionary disciples of his Gospel of divine

love. Our parish family is our way of the future. Let us anticipate it with joy and hope.

MINISTRY AT OPV CATHOLIC

BAPTISM MINISTRY IN NEED OF VOLUNTEERS

The OPV Catholic Baptism Ministry is looking for new volunteers to assist in a variety of areas. We are seeking volunteers at each parish to serve as Baptism Hosts. A Baptism Host attends a baptism and assists in greeting the family attending, as well as assists the priest or deacon in gathering materials. Baptisms typically always follow the latest Sunday morning Mass at each parish and only last about thirty minutes. With enough volunteers, you would only have to serve every other month and only if there is a scheduled baptism.

As we become one parish, it is essential to integrate the many and varied traditions of the five individual parishes in a cohesive, meaningful expression of our union that can be practiced in all of the Church buildings. This applies to various practices, in particular, the White Garment Ministry. The expression of the Baptismal white garment has been varied among our parishes. In order to be receptive to the input of others, a meeting will be schedule in the near future.

If you have any questions or if you would be interested in volunteering as a Baptism Host , please contact Steph Williams by calling the Religious Education Office 412-793-4511 or email [email protected].

SAM – Substance Addiction Ministry

The main purpose of the Christmas Brunch is to provide a meal for those struggling financially, the elderly, the homeless, anyone living alone and basically anyone who may want to come and not eat alone on Christmas Day. The Brunch is open to both Parishioners and non-parishioners. Each year we serve about 200 meals along with an additional 200 meals that we send home with attendees plus dozens of Christmas cookies donated by parishioners.

This will be the first year that this will be an OPV Christmas Brunch. We are in need of volunteers to assist us on Christmas Day. We will need help preparing take-out meals, serving, welcoming and greet-ing, hall setup, cleanup, parking, home deliveries, etc. Each year we have received an overwhelming response from parishioners to volunteer for the Brunch. Due to this response we have scheduled one (1) hour shifts in order to provide everyone with the opportunity to volunteer at the Brunch.

Please sign up to volunteer via Rotunda Volunteer if your schedule permits. Hope to hear from you and Merry Christmas! Sal Altomare 412-780-6929 . Bill Molyneaux 412-215-0560.
