Common Core State Standards The CCSS are a critical element in bringing
about real and meaningful transformationof our national educational system tobenefit each student in every classroom.
The CCSS help define the knowledge andskills all students need to succeed in
college and careers. Expectations will be consistent for all
students across the nation.

The CCSS do not provide:
A complete scope and sequence
A course outline, or
All the essential skills and knowledge studentscould have
The CCSS do provide: Outline the most important essential skills and
knowledge every student needs to master to

Kindergarten:With prompting andsupport, the studentwill ask and answerquestions about keydetails in a text.
11-12th Grade:
Cite strong and thoroughtextual evidence to supportanalysis of what the text says
explicitly as well as inferencesdrawn from the text, including determining wherethe text leaves matters
uncertain.

There are 8 Standards for
Mathematical Practice that go acrossK-12.
Grades K 8 have grade-levelspecific standards similar to the CAStandards.
High School Standards are listed inconceptual categories. (e.g.,Functions, Number & Quantity)

These standards describe a variety of expertise thatmathematics educators at all levels should seek to
develop in their students.1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and qualitatively.
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning ofothers.
4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
6. Attend to precision.
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularly in repeated reasoning.

Assessments for AccountabilityThe Department of Education articulated the
need for a comprehensive assessment systemgrounded in the following basic principles:
Assessments are common across states and
aligned to the CCSS
Student take performance-based assessments
Reporting systems will drive decision-making
The new assessment system will replace NCLB
mandated assessments in participating states.21
