the cell cycle and mitosis
TRANSCRIPT
Mitosis
The process of cell division which results
in the production of two “daughter” cells
from a single parent cell.
The daughter cells are identical to one
another and to the original parent cell.
ProphaseThe cell prepares for division
• DNA condenses to
form chromosomes
• Centrioles appear
• Spindle fibers form
between the poles
MetaphaseThe cell prepares chromosomes for division
• Spindle fibers
attach to the
chromatids
• Chromosomes line
in the midline of the
cell (the equator)
AnaphaseThe chromosomes divide
• Chromatids
separate and
begin to move to
opposite ends of
the cell.
Telophase
• Two new nuclei
form
• Chromosomes
appear as
chromatin (threads
rather than rods)
• Mitosis ends
Cytokinesis
Two daughter cells are formed
• Cell membrane
pinches create two
daughter cells –
each with its own
nucleus and
identical
chromosomes
